Doing fecals, blood films, and cytologies everyday has scarred me for life when it comes to preventative measures. A litter of puppies came in the other day for their first vaccines and we found an adult roundworm in one of their feces. The joys of studying to be a vet tech!

I could have used this video a few months ago! My cat had a HORRID infestation and I had no clue until his neck was all scabbed from the biting and I saw one run across his face! It took so long and it was so hard to get rid of them! It finally came to getting prescription/vet strength treatment and gave it to him for 3 doses. Since then, no more fleas!

I love all organisms... .......except parasites. I have no problem with spiders, I love snakes and I think that rats are cute, but parasites disgust me by how they live on other organisms and make life painful for the host.

When I was a kid I was trying to get to sleep and just like, looking around my room, y'know, as kids do. So I look at the space between my bed and the wall, which was several inches wide, I see dozens of fleas. I don't remember how many there were, but there were a lot. I always assumed they had just hatched. My mom killed as many as she could, but I had to sleep on the couch until everything was straightened out.

How do you feel about Diatomaceous Earth? Is it a no no? I've always been told to use it on any kind of bug infestation
@animalwondersmontana
@animalwondersmontana 8 лет назад
It's a nice nontoxic insecticide, but it's not the most efficient. It needs to be in direct contact with the flea for several hours to kill them and needs to be reapplied several times to get through the full life cycle as the new ones hatch.
@jeremiahmitchell6420

+1wolfgirl300 I do not recomend them. It has been my experience that DE has little value versus fleas.
@alaskabrewer8186
@alaskabrewer8186 8 лет назад
+1wolfgirl300 I have used Diatomaceous Earth before to knock out a problematic flea infestation (2 cats and 2 dogs). You basically have to live in white powder for about 2 weeks. Vacuum and reapply to EVERYTHING daily. Wash all materials that can fit in your machine at the beginning of treatment and again at the end. It is not poisonous, but can dry out your skin a little and be a bit irritating. It worked for me, and I didn't have to use poison. Super cheap and I can use it around the garden too. I would only recommend if you are ready to do A LOT of vacuuming.
@haydens8657

My family had fleas once and diatomaceous earth was one of the first things we used. It was pretty horrible because it was all in the air and it made it a bit difficult to see. Also, I was the only one in my family who experienced this but breathing became very difficult and uncomfortable for me so I would not recommend it
@PrivateDncr86
@PrivateDncr86 8 лет назад
I have used diatomaceous earth to control insect populations in my home. My then-boyfriend and I were looking for a non-chemical way to deal with the fleas that were brought in when we got our youngest (then a kitten). She received a flea treatment at her initial checkup by the vet, and she got a bath immediately upon coming into the house, but the fleas remained. There soon began a war. We gave everyone regular baths and applied DE throughout the house...I will admit that it was sometimes a little hard to breathe normally, but diligent application and vacuuming have proved successful. Plus, other bugs like roaches die from coming in contact with the stuff, so I recommend it! Just be sure to get "food grade" DE, as other varieties can be dangerous.

Ugh, it gets really hard in a big house when it's on cats because they go behind big heavy furniture and you think they're all dead but then two days later they're back. I think by week 2 we were almost ready to just set the entire house on fire. They're so disgusting. Just thinking about fleas makes me itchy.

Where was this in July when I got an infestation from too-high grass? I found the best way to get rid of fleas in my place was to wear pants instead of shorts at home and use plates with water and a little dish soap (only if you have no pets) and clean often, if you can (I have gaps in my floorboards, making this hard). It took a while, but eventually, they died out when the humidity went down in the winter.

when my cat had fleas, they were surprisingly easy to get rid of. we just used flea shampoo (i can't remember what kind of pesticide it used) and a flea collar, which ended up breaking after a short time. but there have been no signs of fleas since. we had a much bigger problem with bed bugs. they weren't interested in the cat, luckily.
@rubymimosa
@rubymimosa 8 лет назад
We've rescued companion animals for years (30+years) and have used Dawn dish soap very successfully. Part of the success might be because I bathe with the dog or cat or ferret so I'm able to keep them pretty saturated for 1/2 hour or more. Microfiber clothes are miraculous when wet at entangling fleas and getting them off pets too,

When I was younger and my parents' house was mostly carpet, we would cover the entire surface of the carpet with regular iodized salt for like 2 or 3 days (wearing socks or slippers to get around) and then vacuum it all up. I remember us doing it multiple times, so I think it might've worked. Then again, here in Louisiana, hanging clear plastic bags full of water around your barns and patios is believed to keep mosquitoes away. So maybe the salt thing is BS.

You know, We used to have dogs who had mild cases of fleas off and on their whole lives. We always figured it was because they were outside so often, and we'd treat them with flea baths when it was bad, or collars/ oils depending on the dog, and that's seemed to work wonders for us. I haven't thought about it much, but I haven't seen a flea in years. Hm. This realization suddenly makes me want to check their beds for fleas.

what I've noticed with fleas is that my cat only seems to get them in the colder months. spring to fall I don't have to treat him at all for fleas (he has some ticks but those are easy to get rid of). but as soon as it gets cold out: bam! fleas.

I am a licensed pest control expert. This is fantastic advice. However, Jessi obviously has great experience with fleas and you may not. If any infesting insect is not completely wiped out from an area with any insecticide there is a high risk of developing resistant insects. Think of antibiotic resistant bacteria as an example. Fleas have a fast breeding cycle and develop pesticide resistance quickly. Vacuuming daily is critical as is continuing to do so for two weeks after the infestation as larval fleas can stay dormant for six months. you may even wish to have your yard treated as well.

I got a question back then I used to have two Cockatiels but, they started producing this white fuzz and It would fall off them but they wouldn't shed their large feathers. What the white fuzz did though was give allergies to my mom. What I am trying to ask though is, do all birds domesticated birds produce this white fuzz? Keep in mind though my cockatiels were scared of everything so I couldn't give them a proper shower.
@ShadeSlayer1911
@ShadeSlayer1911 8 лет назад
+Llama king I'm pretty sure you're talking about their powder feathers. It's completely natural, and in fact necessary for them to keep clean, dry, and parasite-free. One of the things you have to consider about owning a bird like a cockatiel is that they produce a lot of powder from their feathers. In some cases, it gets bad enough that it clogs up air filters, but it's very important to keep their area well ventilated to prevent respiratory problems. And yes, allergies from their powder feathers is fairly common. Think of it like dander on mammals. A lot of people are allergic to the dander rather than the pet themselves. Also, tiels shouldn't need showers normally, as they can usually keep themselves clean on their own. Showers are a good way to bond with your bird though, so that's a plus. Birds tend to love baths, but only if they're comfortable with you first. Until then, spraying them with a spray bottle is your best way to give them a quick alternative if you're determined to give them showers.

I've got a question, what do you think the best location for a bird cage is in a household?
@animalwondersmontana
@animalwondersmontana 8 лет назад
The room that you spend most of your daytime in is where the bird should be. Windows are great for birds who like the stimulation of outside, but it can be stressful for others. Half and half works well for some. Be careful it doesn't get too cold though. Sometimes a smaller bedtime cage works with the personality of the bird and your relationship, but it's not necessary. Keep the bird out of the kitchen and bathroom, both are filled with perilous places to land/fall and dangerous chemicals.

I have to wonder if you've heard about diatomaceous earth? I had an older cat that was allergic to flees, but since we lived in a carpeted apartment I was really worried dogs on our floor would bring them in or even friends so I brushed D-earth into the carpet every month. From what I read it's not harmful to the environment and my cats never got flees. You can even feed it to animals safely to remove things like worms. It's an all around pest killer. The cat I had has passed away since so I no longer use it, we also have hard wood in our new apartment. But let me know if you've heard of it, or if you think it's bad or good to use.
@animalwondersmontana
@animalwondersmontana 8 лет назад
The way you used it was great! It's a nice option for prevention if you're in an area that frequently is exposed to fleas, but the chances of misapplying is high which makes the use of it less desirable for actual infestations.
@ohbthr

+AnimalWonders Montana There is actually a company that has a technician come in and apply it for you - they guarantee effectiveness for a year. We had a really bad infestation due to the recent CA drought, and after the technician came in they disappeared! (After six weeks, since it has to go through their whole life cycle.)

ShadeSlayer1911 Yeah. About 6 years ago, one of my dogs got out of our yard and started following a dog that was infested with ticks. We didn't know that would have been an issue, until a few weeks after the incident, and ever since then, ticks has been the largest issue of pests in our home. we've tried the Adam's tick and flea poisons, but without success. I constantly clean the house, shower, check and groom my dogs, but these ticks always find a way to flourish. It's still a problem today.

Can humans have fleas on them too?
@gildedbear5355
@gildedbear5355 8 лет назад
I am unsure if the fleas that go after dogs and cats are also interested in humans. I believe they are but I'm not sure. However, unlike lice, fleas really infest the area rather than the creature. They feed on your pet (and possibly you) but don't really live there, though they do hang out near or on their meals at times. In other words, even if the fleas aren't interested in you for food, its your house that have them and they will find their way onto you.
