Robin's interview said, "I want to do all the vocal takes in one go, so even if there are fuck-ups, I want them to be on there. I want there to be guitar mistakes. I want there to be not totally flawless vocals." Bullshit, this is perfect.

That must be what happened in "An Argument" 'cause most of that is a big experimental jazz mistake. Shame too 'cause I really like the first half, "The Shrine" and I wish it lead into something amazing after such a nice buildup.

@@Brendan-Black An argument isn't meant to be pretty to listen to though... it's meant to be chaotic and disjointed as the strings at the end of The Shrine would suggest. The serene Blue Spotted Tail following shortly after as a contrast to the jumbled mess that supersedes it was a conscious choice and it works within reason. Not everything that's meant to be messy and freeflowing has to be visually aesthetic or pleasing to the ears. Dissonance in itself can be a beautiful quality in music and An Argument was a complete mess that exists in the right place at the right time in the right record.

One of my best friends died last year in a car wreck. He loved Fleet Foxes. We listened to them for several years. This was his favorite song by them. His brother played this at his wake and funeral. I can never forget him. I loved him so much, and my heart aches everyday. I feel close to him when I listen to this song. It describes him more than anything in my heart. Rest in power, Eli.

The first time I heard this song, I was in my car on my lunch break. It was 105 outside and we hadn't seen rain in months. This song came on the radio and suddenly the temperature dropped 15 degrees, a nice breeze started blowing, and birds started flying together, in sequence, in the field across the road from me. As soon as the song ended there was a silent pause, followed by a down poor of rain. I know it has nothing to do with the song, but thought it was worth sharing.

To me personally, the song is about waiting for a purpose in life. I feel like "I had an orchard (purpose), I'd work til I'm sore". I don't want to be unique I just want some meaning in my life.
@aquanator313
@aquanator313 4 года назад
I think its about purpose, but i interpret it as having a purpose that has value to you, yourself vs that of others. The lines of "I don't need to be kind to the armies of night that would do such injustice to you Or bow down and be grateful and say, "Sure, take all that you see" To the men who move only in dimly-lit halls and determine my future for me" as well as "I'll come back to you someday soon myself" speak to me about knowing what's important to yourself and following that path vs what others want or expect you to do.

I know i'll get ripped to shreds for writing this, but i'll do it anyway. Always loved this song and have been a FF fan since I heard "he doesn't know why" almost 15 years ago. It took me 10 years after this song came out and hearing it again now, that I realize that for me, "serving something beyond me" meant becoming part of the Church I was raised in, but never really thought twice about until a few years ago. It's serving something beyond me, beyond in fact this plane of existence. The fantasy Robin speaks of - a beautiful spouse, some farmland and a store in a rustic, bucolic paradise he describes after the bridge still isn't enough, he's still hoping that someday "he'll be like the man on the screen" aka, the big guy, the hero, the man who has it all figured out. That day will never come - and even if it did, it still wouldn't be enough. Everything fades and wears out, the buildings, the structures, the temporary moments of glory - even the comfort or satisfaction of a life in rural simplicity - all of it is going to change and decay, just like the very bodies we inhabit. We have to build toward what will never fade, and what will never be corrupted. "Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal; but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also."

I was raised up believing I was somehow unique Like a snowflake distinct among snowflakes Unique in each way you can see And now after some thinking I'd say I'd rather be A functioning cog in some great machinery Serving something beyond me But I don't, I don't know what that will be I'll get back to you someday soon, you will see What's my name, what's my station Oh, just tell me what I should do I don't need to be kind to the armies of night That would do such injustice to you Or bow down and be grateful And say: Sure, take all that you see To the men who move only in dimly lit halls And determine my future for me And I don't, I don't know who to believe I'll get back to you someday soon, you will see If I know only one thing It's that everything that I see Of the world outside is so inconceivable Often I barely can speak Yeah, I'm tongue-tied and dizzy And I can't keep it to myself What good is it to sing helplessness blues? Why should I wait for anyone else? And I know, I know you will keep me on the shelf I'll come back to you someday soon myself If I had an orchard I'd work till I'm raw If I had an orchard I'd work till I'm sore And you would wait tables And soon run the store Gold hair in the sunlight My light in the dawn If I had an orchard I'd work till I'm sore If I had an orchard, I'd work till I'm sore Someday I'll be like the man on the screen

This is a song for my generation. This is the folk music of those who came of age during the Great Recession. If it wasn't so beautiful it would be hard to listen to because it's the exact feeling so many of us get lately. That line "If I had an orchard, I'd work till I'm sore" is exactly what I'd say to those who say my generation just doesn't have the same work ethic. We do. We work hard at what we're passionate at and just want a chance to make something of that effort.

@@Headytopper125 the first verse of the song sums it up pretty well but when you get pulled into the GT program there’s this idea that you’re special, you’re super smart, etc etc - but at some point the special school programs and shit ends and you realize you’re just like everybody else, you’re not really special, only you never learned how to cope with regular day to day bs like all the other kids because your schooling was tailored to always be engaging for you specifically. I had so much fun in that program as a kid but I NEVER had to learn how to study and persevere in subjects that were challenging for me, and I crashed and burned when I hit the first class I couldn’t just coast through. Now I’m an adult who was “raised up believing I was somehow unique” but I’d rather be that functioning cog they mention.

@@callielayneherring5888 not to say it's better one way or the other, but you wouldn't have learned how to study either way. In regular classes you'd be bored out of your mind or antsy, trying to get the lesson moving. In the gifted classes, it's good until they change gifted from advanced, interesting stuff outside a regular curriculum, to making "gifted" shorthand for extra work. When gifted becomes extra work, that's when burnout happens. It's not interesting or relevant, its just more papers and quizzes.

Love this song. To me, it's a tongue-in-cheek reflection of young people's attitudes toward work and purpose in Western capitalist society. We've grown up hearing we can be and do anything and it's our individuality that is of utmost importance, but reality sinks in when pressed to figure out what we should "be." On the one hand, it seems desirable to be part of something larger than ourselves--to be a "functioning cog in some great machinery"; on the other, the concept of being owned and manipulated by a faceless, moral-less economic system doesn't sound too fulfilling. The quandary. Ultimately, we return to our individualist roots, envisioning a romanticized, self-made future of pure, hard work and reacquaintance with nature. The killer ending line, "Someday I'll be like the man on the screen," exposes this dream for what it truly is: the product of the very same capitalist machinery that we thought we'd escaped. The TV fuels the pastoral ideal, keeping it forever out of reach as we run tirelessly on the treadmills of capitalism, believing we'll one day, someday achieve purpose in our lives.

This song is about the uncertainty of being a young adult at this point in time. It’d be nice if we could plug ourselves into the machine and have everything determined for us, we think in our anxiety, but we know deep down this is the wrong course. Deep down, we know it’s up to us to decide how to live, what kind of person we’re to be. Many of us yearn for a simpler time and a life where we have the ability to work towards a good life for ourselves and our families, which is what the orchard part of the song represents.

Tbh I hate ranting ab my own life on songs but this one speaks to me Like life seems so difficult, especially as I prep for college & try to hold a job. There’s just so much to do, I yearn for a small, simple future where things are laid out for me (What’s my name, what’s my station). I know I could function well & correctly if I just knew the right steps. I don’t need fame or glory if I can have a little life. Edit: one year later and things are going way better. I made this comment my senior year of HS when I was going through a lot of bad stuff. I’m working toward the little life my past self yearned for. I have a job I actually like and some great friends. Keep it real everyone, it gets better. Even if not all at once, it gets a little better every day💜

as a junior in high school who is beginning to stress about college and filling my resume, this song always brings me to tears. I don’t think I have ever related to a song more in my entire life. This song makes me want to rewind the clock and send myself back to the days I would sit in the car as a young girl singing “you are my sunshine” with my dad. I’m so scared of the future and what I will be, and reality is finally hitting me that I most likely will not be the rich and famous girl I aspire to be. I just recently got rejected from NHS, but accepted into NEHS. Life is hard, life is tiring, but I like the simple story at the end of this song. A simple life is something I want, alone and free with the wilderness surrounded by friends and family. Maybe one day I can live the life I want, and not work to please everyone as a “unique snowflake”. UPDATE: everything worked out! I got accepted somewhere and am now on my way to living my dream going to school in the city. Best of luck to everyone on their journeys through life, I hope whichever path you take is full of beauty and life and love.

Focus on being rich in the heart and not the bank account. You will live happier overall even when poor, you will be rich in the heart. look at how many famous people that have it all, or so we think they have it all, commit suicide. Be unique, simple, humble and generous then everything will fall in place.

@@sidhantsood5373 Her feelings are valid. You don't need to belittle people or their experiences to validate how difficult or treacherous yours was. People like you need to listen to this song, learn, and empathize with others. Your struggles may be more or less severe than hers, but by bringing hers down you are allowing others to do the same to you. I'm assuming you wouldn't care though since you're such an "academic intellect" but lack the emotional intellect to respect and empathize with people. Without that you are nothing my friend, learn to love. The world has too much hate... don't add to it. I love the honesty and rawness of this song. It definitely describes my, "desert wandering" years until the Maker of this whole place hunted me down and filled me with joy that's almost inexpressible at times. The Lord Jesus Christ is the answer to helplessness in every form including religious helplessness that so many are burdened and weighed down by striving when the work has already been done for them in Christ. I would highly recommend reading C.S. Lewis's book, "Surprised by Joy." I won't go on much longer, but this quote of Lewis's says it all: " Look for Christ and you will find him, and with him everything else thrown in."

Don't to wish we could all be friends? None of us actually know anyone who listens to all the great music that we like. We constantly feel like we're alone in our musical preference. The only others seem to only reside in the comments section of our sonic medicine. We're clearly out there - only perpetually separated by the anonymity of the Internet. It's a damn shame. We need each other. We'd all be so happy together. One of these days, we will unite. Somewhere. Somehow.
@snape539
@snape539 6 лет назад
we've been together all along, people just need to sit down and realize that, just as one would to enjoy this beautiful piece of music then they'll be ready to see it for themselves, that they lied to us all along. Even now there's forces working in the shadows trying to separate us, i just wish we could unite against them, but we're still blind.

Fleet Foxes definitely take me back to acoustic rock groups like Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, The Byrds, Simon and Garfunkel as well as the British folk/rock group Lindisfarne. The similarities are the acoustic instruments and the harmonies. Whether Fleet Foxes were directly influenced by any of these groups is irrelevant. They have their own sound, their own style, their own music Hope they reform and tour Australia.

Underated and simply one of the most magnificent pieces I have had the pleasure of hearing. I was told by the local record store, about 10 years ago, that this band had one of the most beautiful pieces ever to grace your ears; the clerk told me to give this album a listen. I went home, listened to the entire album, which in itself is purity... But this song hit different. I knew this was what he spoke of. Absolutely stunning. Goosebumps and chills up my spine; as if I were pulled into the tale sung in this masterpiece. It was almost dream like. This and Casimir Pulaski Day sung by Sufijan Stevens had me in a dreamlike state I had not experienced since hearing Us and Them by Pink Floyd when I was young girl.
