Taking some time at the Visalia International DX Convention with Michael Walker VE3MW to talk about the new Maestro 3. We also cover the technology behind how Flex handles remote ham radio and it's quite impressive!

VA3MW is the most informed sales rep I have ever seen, well, between him, or Wayne & Eric from Elecraft. I wish all companies would operate in a similar manner where they just tell you exactly what they are selling, give you the specs, and do so with a truthful passion for the product they are pitching! It is this type of salesmanship that gets my respect, and I wish more businesses thought this way. I'm more likely to purchase an item from a company that gets my respect, and would much rather budget for a quality item as such that will last a lifetime as apposed to purchase a sub par product that I'll likely discard of in some fashion soon after purchasing it.

Considering that those are over four years old, the rescue taken buying one is the fact that there may not be parts for it if something goes up and it stops working

Josh, call me crazy, however I want just the right hand side of the Maestro with a USB cable hanging out so I can plug it into my laptop and control Smart SDR. I already have three (two 27" and a 17.3") 4k screens in front of me so all I need is a place to plug a key into and some real knobs. And as a bonus if it had a small screen like a Stream Deck in place of the six buttons in the middle that I could program to do what I want them to do depending on band and mode that would be awesome While I have my wish list open can we add some integration with the PGXL, TGXL and antenna genius?

Mike is a very good technology educator. I like the analogies he uses to convey the point.

Just to be clear, if the Flex radio itself and any of the usual spot sources (SpotCollector, ...) are on the same LAN with a Maestro, the Maestro will display the resulting spots. If you take your Maestro away, say to some Denny's somewhere and connect to the radio, the spots will show up in the Maestro. If you DON'T have a computer back home running spot software on the same LAN as the radio, but bring the computer with you, and run any of the usual spot sources on it just like at home (they have to run on SOME computer, right ? They ARE a computer app) and connect that computer to the radio over the internet (likely, the same way you're connecting the Maestro - say, over WiFi), the spots will show up in the Maestro (even though the computer isn't directly connected to the Maestro). How do you connect that computer (running the spot software) to the radio ? Flex provides two software routines (free) that run on the computer that do that. You bring them up and they find the radio over the network (in this case, the internet) automatically. They are extremely easy to set up and work well. By the way, you can run all KINDS of ham related software on that computer and they will connect into this Maestro/computer/radio connection the same way. All of this is a significant distinguishing feature of Flex Radio. And as if that weren't enough, two completely different clients can connect to a single Flex radio AT THE SAME TIME this way. It's called "MultiFlex". It all might sound a bit weird or foreign but it's actually VERY easy to set up and use. Pretty amazing ...

The lack of built in voice memories is still bothersome for me. Their response to people asking for it is to tell users to use third party software or write their own. If I'm going to use a Maestro, I don't want to also need to run software on my computer...might as well just run SmartSDR on the computer and not purchase the Maestro at that point. This feature is in almost all other HF radios.
