FLIGHT 11: Heroes in the Sky

The pilots, flight attendants and passengers of Flight 11 showed tremendous courage and poise in the face of great adversity and fear. Individuals profiled include flight attendants Betty Ong, Amy Sweeney and Sarah Low. Passenger Daniel Lewin, brilliant inventor, entrepreneur and businessman who may have taken action against the attackers, and pilots John Ogenowski and Thomas McGuinness. Recordings from that day help bring to life the events of that day and hopefully honor the actions of the brave people aboard the flight as well as the people they communicated with on the ground who worked to identify the attackers and tried to protect the other 596 flights in the sky that day.

Amy wasn’t even supposed to be on that flight but she was called last minute to take the shift as a crew member was sick. And it was said by her husband that she was dreading going to work that day as she was missing out on seeing her 5 year old daughter go to kindergarten.

This video really means something to me because, you see, I was at Chambers street and Broadway (a few blocks from the world trade center) on September 11, 2001. I was about to get on the subway. It was 8:46 in the morning. The day was gorgeous. Suddenly, I was jolted by a thunderous, loud sound. I looked up and there was flight 11. I followed the flight as it went into the WTC. I knew instantly that it was terrorism because the plane made no attempt to avoid the towers. I have always felt connected to those innocent people who senselessly died on that horrible day.

I recently rewatched 9/11 by the Naudet brothers, the only photographer to catch the impact of flight 11. Chief Pfeiffer who witnessed it and responded immediately says on the radio when requesting help that the plane hit on purpose. I was struck by that because so few wanted to accept that but because of Chief Pfeiffer first responders should have known it wasn’t an accident, and it hadn’t been a small plane. Thank you for sharing your story. I cannot fathom witnessing that in person and experiencing that day on site rather than through television. You literally lived history, like being in Pearl Harbor. What is that like? Did you know you were living history at that moment? As a historian I am just curious. Don’t feel obligated to answer if you aren’t comfortable with it. That was a terrible thing to witness.

@MMorbid Just to let you know, the first statement was true until 2022. A man was reviewing footage he took on the highway that morning, he never released, thinking it was just a video of traffic on a highway anyway, In the background of his footage, you can watch flight 11 smash the north tower. Now there are 2 videos of the first crash.

This video is a great compilation of details that occurred. I remember watching the tragedy live, 22 years ago. When the first plane, Flight 11, hit the tower, the news outlets stayed on the air just showing the plane and some smoke. At first it appeared to be an accident. Nothing was confirmed. Then, the 2nd plane hit and we knew it was a terrorist attack. Thank you for showing the statue in TX. I don't remember ever seeing that before. Throughout the years, I have heard various details. I have watched videos of survivors telling their stories. To concentrate on one flight at a time, honors those on board and allows us to hear important details. Betty and Amy remained levelheaded. My condolences to all who lost a loved one. The only way to truly "never forget" is to continue to air videos like this one.

@tracycolvin7789 I get all of my information about 9/ 11 from youtube, and sadly, you hear very little about the flights, with barely an interview from family or friends. Perhaps it is what we might call avoidance because our brains have a hard enough time just dealing with the stories we are already presented with, like the firemen. Thank you so much for highlighting people from the other flights. I know that when people admire and highlight the people on United flight 93 it doesn’t diminish the lives and heroism of the people on the other flights but it seems like we know so very much about the passengers and crew of flight 93 and not nearly as much about others. I really enjoyed this. I think you’ve found your calling. What you do with your documentaries is so important. Thank you….

Been watching so much coverage over the past few days. During this horrible day I didn't take my eyes off the television, to the point where i was forced to walk away. I recorded on vhs I had close to 15 tapes full. I have to say that these past few days, your video was what I was looking for and didn't find until today. Thank you for your coverage of the heroes who helped us find out who had done this. And because of them, the heros of flight 93 took down those vile pos's before anymore lives were lost.

Of all the names that day… Betty Ong is the main name I remember. Her information was the first eyes and ears to what was going on. Every time I fly, I can’t help but think of her and all those that died that day. I am grateful for their bravery and providing others with details that may not have been known without their contributions. May all those souls rest in peace 🕊️😢

Thanks so much for a wonderfully informative account of what took place on AA Flight 11. Everything on this video has been well researched and accurately described on what was the darkest day of terrorism in history. You were so incredibly respectful and thoughtful in your video and I am sure that the families and friends of all the innocent victims of Flight 11 will be so appreciative. It’s absolutely heartbreaking to listen to the communication from the attendants. RIP to ALL the innocent victims of 9/11 🙏🙏💔💔😔😔

I just watched this video and your flight 175 video. Amazing job done so tastefully and respectfully. The crew and passengers (minus the hijackers, obviously) on this flight were incredible. Listening to Betty Ong’s call, I doubt I’d be able to remain as calm and collected as she was. Also - I used to live in the Dallas-Fort Worth area and I had no idea about the flight crew monument! To sum this all up: thank you so much for this video, and keep making them!

New subscriber...I am binge watching this weekend. I am impressed with not only the amount of information but also the respect that is shown for the passengers and crew. I almost skipped your 9/11 videos (as I've watched so many) but so glad I didn't! After all these years, I heard new information that I hadn't heard before. This video brought tears to my eyes; the way that you presented the facts about passengers and crew was so moving. RIP to the passengers and crew on these planes and people in the buildings...Peace and comfort to their families. These events will surely be in our minds and hearts for our lifetimes. I will never forget that day.
