WHICH AIRLINE HAS GREAT SERVICE…. FANTASTIC FOOD…. A BAR IN BUSINESS CLASS…. BUT THE FUNKIEST SEATS IN THE SKY? IT’S VIRGIN ATLANTIC!

OUR FLIGHT TO JOHANNESBURG TODAY IS ACTUALLY PART TWO OF OUR JOURNEY AS WE STARTED THE DAY IN NEW YORK.
SO, FROM NEW YORK TO SOUTH AFRICA-- IN “UPPER CLASS” (THAT’S WHAT VIRGIN ATLANTIC CALLS THIER BUSINESS CLASS), WE USED 105-THOUSAND VIRGIN POINTS AND PAID JUST $617 EACH.
WE EARNED THOSE VIRGIN POINTS BY USING OUR CITI PRESTIGE CARD AND OUR CHASE INK CARD. EACH ALLOWS TRANSFERS TO VIRGIN ATLANTIC, AND OCCASIONALLY YOU’LL SEE A BONUS OFFER--SUCH AS THIS ONE- A THIRTY PERCENT BONUS ON YOUR TRANSFER.
NOW, LET’S TALK ABOUT THOSE FUNKY SEATS. VIRGIN ATLANTIC HAS TWO DIFFERENT UPPER CLASS CABINS: THE 787 IS THE ONE YOU WANT TO AVOID, IF YOU CAN. AND, I SAY “IF YOU CAN” BECAUSE EVEN IF YOU GET THE BETTER A350 SEAT AT TIME OF BOOKING, THERE’S NO GUARANTEE THAT’S THE EQUIPMENT YOU’LL HAVE ON THE DAY OF YOUR FLIGHT.
OUR BOOKING INDICATED THE 787 FOR BOTH FLIGHTS, SO I COULD ONLY HOPE WE’D SEE A LAST-MINUTE EQUIPMENT CHANGE AND GET THE BETTER A350 CABIN.
BUT, THAT DIDN’T HAPPEN.
All the seats ON THE 787 face the aisle, with rows G and K facing each other. THE A SEATS FACE A LOW WALL. IF YOU HAVE A WINDOW SEAT, you have to really strain your neck to see out the window AS THE SEATS ARE POINTED THE OTHER DIRECTION. AND THE PARTITIONS BETWEEN SEATS ARE NOT VERY HIGH AT ALL.
THERE’S VERY LITTLE STORAGE IN AND AROUND THE SEAT.
THE BEDDING IS STOWED BEHIND THE SEAT.
WAITING for us IS A MENU…. AND AN AMENITY KIT. SEE THE FULL CONTENTS OF THE KIT NEAR THE END OF THIS VIDEO.
THE SCREEN IS TINY AND SWINGS OUT FROM THE PARTITION. UNDER THE MONITOR IS THE EARPHONE PORT AND A USB PORT.
TO ONE SIDE THERE IS A SMALL SPACE FOR THE HEADPHONES AND IN THERE YOU’LL ALSO FIND A UNIVERSAL POWER SOCKET.
THERE IS A SMALL LEDGE THAT FOLDS DOWN, JUST BIG ENOUGH FOR A DRINK OR TWO.
THE WINDOWS on this Dreamliner DIM ELECTRONICALLY WITH THE PUsH OF A BUTTON.
The seat controls are just above your thigh, and there’s a button here to release the tray table.
It’s large and sturdy, and there’s just enough clearance to squeeze by and into the aisle if need be.
PAJAMAS WERE HANDED OUT FOR THIS ELEVEN-HOUR FLIGHT.
The inflight entertainment system is called “vera” and they have a few clever vignettes that play while it’s loading.
And, there are a few adverts you’ll need to sit through.
About thirty minutes AFTER TAKEOFF, WE DID GET A DRINK AND SOME CRISPS.

About a week before our flights, I booked our meals. On this flight, virgin Atlantic offers a whopping nine different entrées! If you don’t book pre-flight, you’ll have only three choices once on board.

After serving me some bread, sam brought me my starter: smoked salmon with quail’s egg, garlic chive mayonnaise, grilled asparagus and lemon pearls. The lemon pearls were brilliant!
And, of course, there’s Orville and Wilbur, the famous virgin atlantic salt and pepper shakers (which they welcome you to “pinch” and take home).
I opted for the Roasted trout filet with jasmine rice, pickled radish and carrot, charred bok choy, coriander cress and a light Thai green sauce.
Number one chose the cod filet with capers, broccolini and potatoes.
When You’re ready for sleep, one off the f.a.’s will push the right buttons to convert the seat into a bed.
I actually managed to get about six hours of sleep!
For breakfast, I had the bubble and squeak cake with free range poached egg AND chive hollandaise sauce, wilted spinach and cherry tomatoes.
Gotta have my bailey’s!
Number one had the baguette French toast.
