Flint knapping a paleoindian knife blade from North Carolina Rhyolite!
In this fascinating video, Jay - a skilled flintknapper with 15 years of experience - takes us on a journey back in time as he uses his expert knowledge of ancient techniques to transform a piece of North Carolina rhyolite into a beautifully crafted paleoindian knife. Flintknapping, the art of shaping stone into tools and weapons, is a skill that has been passed down through generations, and Jay is a true master of this ancient craft.
Using nothing but his bare hands and a few simple tools, Jay employs the time-honored technique of indirect ishi stick flaking to carefully remove small, controlled pieces of the rock and shape it into a sharp and functional knife. The process is mesmerizing to watch, as Jay uses his knowledge of the properties of the stone and the flintknapping techniques to carefully and expertly shape the rock into its final form.
But this video is not just about the flintknapping process - it's also about the incredible rock that Jay uses to make his knife. North Carolina rhyolite is a type of volcanic rock that is known for its durability and resistance to fracturing, making it perfect for use in flintknapping. This rock, found only in the state of North Carolina, has been used by Native Americans for thousands of years to make tools and weapons, and it continues to be a favorite among flintknappers today.
So join Jay on this incredible journey as he takes us back in time and shows us the amazing process of flintknapping - from start to finish. Watch as he transforms a plain piece of North Carolina rhyolite into a beautifully crafted paleoindian knife, and be amazed by the skill, knowledge, and talent that goes into this ancient craft. Don't miss this incredible video - watch now and be inspired!

Never thought I'd be invoice of rhyolite but that's super good quality. You should try some of the rhyolite from southern pa. And I knapp river cobbles 70 miles from the source. That's like butter.

I live here in North Carolina and I feel your pain with the Rhyolite. I order rock from out of state, so I can enjoy knapping more. I feel for the old folks who had nothing else for knapping.

I live in NC. Had a piece laying around and messed with it for 15 minutes. It’s too hard on tools and my arms. Mr. Jack Crafty calls this “Man Rock” and I agree. Most of the points we find in Piedmont North Carolina are Rhyolite or Quartz. They tend to be thick rough points. Most look like they are step fractured and not flaked. You either have the magic touch rich Rhyolite or that’s some really good quality stuff. It was used as railroad gravel and road bed gravel. It’s tough stuff.

From way back rhyolite was a preferred material here in south central Pa. They mined it like the the flint ridge stuff in Ohio. If you get a chance looke up snaggy ridge rhyolite pa. It’s a protected site but open to public. I don’t know how they worked it but I’d guess they heat treated it.

If from the morrow mountain area, you can get a little better quality, not talking about park area, but much from the Asheboro area knapps about like what you have. The banded ryholite works much better. A nice dogwood bopper also seems to work better for me.

If you ask around nobody in NC EVER has any Ryolite but people six states away keep showing up with it and I'm starting to get jealous. I know people who have knapped every knappable stone this side of the country who swear they've never even seen NC Ryolite. and they live here lmao

I live in NC and have found a lot of those blades. 95% are ryholite and chert. It is hard to find really nice points although I have found some smokers most are ruddy and looks thousands of years older than anything else. I am definitely going to start knapping points as a hobby

I've worked alot of Missouri rhyolite, and yes it is unforgiving, I've found you have to hit it like ya mean it, and have a strong platform to hit. also I use an Ishi stick to pressure, gives more power. but overall ya didn't do bad
