My first ever Nascar race was Michigan, saw Larson get his first win. Jr aint kidding when he says theyre flying, while the cup cars were qualifying they were doing like 210ish on the straights. It was amazing to see. Watching a race on tv is NOTHING like seeing it in person. If anyone who reads this comment has never been to one. You have to in your lifetime. The feeling of cars going that fast is unlike anything else, the only thing that is more intense would be Top Fuel dragsters or funny cars.
You're exactly right. I've seen all three. If you've ever been in the pits at a drag race and heard a 10,000 horsepower engine fire up , it is like God reaching down and grabbing you by the throat and saying hey you better check that out.
Dale JR, you are excatly right abour the 80s and 90s, NASCAR is killing itself with their antics, from cars, rules inconsistencies, ECT. Too much money involved. You, Kevin Harvick, Tony Stewart, Ray Everham, ans Mark Martin should start a Stock car series that mirrowss NASCAR and get us back to true real racing not based on $$$$$.
I think ryan Newman's flip was tamer than ryan preece, but immediately following. Ryan Newman's was scarier due to him not getting out under his own power
@@Brandon-qy4rs i was at both races in person. I didnt experience the TV either tine except for after the fact. From a lice fan experiene though it was hard to see newman as i was sitting off turn 4. But with preece, I could see him flipping higher than all the trailers on the infield
I love the passion of all you guys. What I like about this show compared to other sports shows is that there's not a negative vibe. Like... plenty of shows have a structure that requires people to be on two different sides of things. Sometimes there are some natural disagreements but everyone is just discussing. Nobody jumps down each other's throats about being wrong. For the most part, everyone wants to give it a shot at looking at it from both sides, which makes it so enjoyable to listen to week in and week out
Why did the commentators act like a Nascar flippimg going 195 mph was such a crazy and preventable thing? Cars going this fast will ALWAYS have the potential to flip, there is literally nothing Nascar can do to change this scientific fact!
Jr. and the guys are right about the late start times and delayed starts. I have lost more and more interest in Nascar since the retirement of Mike Helton. I wish we could back to old school racing which is what built Nascar. Searching for when and where to watch the race has lead to my wife and I to stop going to actual races. During the mid 2000's through the teens we went to Daytona, Fontana, Bristol, Sears Point, Phoenix. and Vegas! We stopped going due to the inconsistencies of Nascar.
At Daytona last year, everyone was caught up in the Preece wreck, which was "spectacular," but it was the Ryan Blaney crash that was absolutely brutal. Just thinking about it, I get this feeling that I wanna tense up. It was so bad, but it basically got forgotten and ignored. I don't know if it's the new fans that just don't understand it as well, but it's crazy to me that the Blaney wreck isn't even talked about.
In the 2009 Aaron's 499 Talladega race final lap, Brad Keselowski(09) pushed Carl Edwards's (99) car and launched off Newman's (39) car air born in the catch fence. Carl exits his car and runs across the start/finish line. Crazy how Brad & Carl passed you and Newman. Brad wins the race.
I'm old enough to remember Bill Elliott breaking his leg from the car slamming down on the track after getting airborne, I can also remember one of the times that Carl Edwards tried to kill Brad Keselowski in the wreck at Atlanta.
It's caused by the flat bottoms of the cars. I know it increases downforce and makes for better gas mileage, but.... the opposite happens when it goes backwards.
Car never made it backward. Watch the replay very slow. The car does a "hitch" when the one flap opens. Exposing the entire right side with only one flap open. Then the 20+mph wind down the back stretch packed under the car and it was all over from there.
@@philsonnenberg6092 Sideways works under the same principle. I dunno if relative humidity plays a role in the susceptibility to catch air, but I wouldn't be surprised. i's a problem in all forms of racing at a certain high speed, or certain circumstances. The roof flaps are designed so simply hope to slow the cars by a few extra miles per hour to get below that threshold.
@@Iambrendanjames Still watch the replay and then watch the 1 with about the same spin. The 1 went spinning much faster and BOTH flaps opened and sat the car back down. Michigan is fast, fastest in NASCAR. Add to it the 20mph head wind and stuff happens.
They know its the flat bottom they can't say it. Just like the rigid back end, which ended Kurt's career, they kept running it until something could be done. All the engineers in the sport know this car was poorly designed. Heck I can see it, you know they can.
@@philsonnenberg6092 Yes and probably dozens of examples of cars spinning through the same area without an issue for decades. It's not gonna happen every time. And I still swear by my humidity in the air adding mass and force to the air increasing the likelihood of catching air.
NASCAR is a dangerous sport, much more with this car than it has been in a long time. I don't want anyone to get hurt racing but if all the drivers can drive the same speed there will never be superstars like senior or gordon. Risk equals reward. The drivers now grew up seeing massive wrecks with drivers walking away. Let the teams run fast cars, good drivers will push out the unsafe drivers, fans and sponsors will be excited again.
I agree I hate going and looking on my phone and then it telling you a time and then you have to make sure that it's in the correct time zone. Gets me every time nothing's more upset than turning it on and being an hour or two late.
@45:00 I’ve gotten to the point where I just catch the extended highlights on NBC motorsports RU-vid channel every Sunday night if I can’t find it on tv.
@dalejr I didn't used to, but I love you for speaking the truth! 40 year racing fan, NASCAR cup was top 2. But throwing a flag, when it needs to stay in your pocket just to create a" better " product for race fans, is way of the mark. I struggle to watch anymore. There is plenty of sprints, modified, local, f1 and even indycar to get my racing fix.
Sadler just mentioned his Michigan crash higher than the catch fence once the quarter ripped off. If nascar was worried of footage being released then hopefully this isn’t the last straw.
Best podcast on the air. Lifelong Earnhardt fan and race fan. This podcast opens my eyes to things and makes the races on the weekend much more intriguing. The stories told fulfills the nostalgic desires of race fans. Keep it up guys. Can’t get enough
One thing we all might as well get used to that nascar has to be entertaining to others beside old school hardcore fans with out it the sport will not thrive right or wrong it's entertainment just have to hope it dosnt get worse
The new car has moved the focus of the downforce to under the car rather than the top. Is it possible that the roof flaps are causing more problems than helping in certain angles? The speed is not an issue, especially since the cars are slower than previous generation.. flat floor, diffuser, different side/quarter panels… also check out the shape of the floor around the exhaust, looks like it may create lift at that angle.
In addition, since the demise of sister track FONTANA, also a 2 mile Oval...That was some awesome racing at Michigan and I already miss that size track of speed and my old home track Fontana will never be as good as Michigan still was this weekend!
Michigan was amazing before they repaved it. Go back and watch the races from the mid-2000s. Fast, multi-grroved and lots of passing. Handling mattered as much as the horsepower and aero.
As a meteorologist, the start time debate is frustrating because storms fire in the peak heating of the day around 2-3pm then last until as late as 8pm. With earlier start times, at least half the race could get in before the storms fire and then you could at least get most of the race in before it rains out later. The TV partners lose when the rain postpones events anyways with smaller audiences. This needs to be done at least during the summer months before football season.
Race start times, stages, manufactured cautions, double file restarts, & CATERING TO THE CASUAL FAN ONLY COST NASCAR THEIR CORE, HARD CORE FANS that don't need all those gimmicks to make them Interested in the product.
Speaking of what time a race should start, anyone notice that F-1 coverage of there races has a big Rolex watch and they always show it clicking over too the hour and the exact moment it does the cars roll off and that is something Nascar could look at only because it does look more professional when you see that level of precision!
RU-vid TV DVR recording has relieved some of my frustration with all the various start times in all series F1, IndyCar and NASCAR. It automatically records based on series name, regardless of station or start time. It has not solved moving stations when a race runs overtime and the stupid local network wants to show a nature show or some stick/ball sport instead.
If a track doesn't have lights it's a hard 1pm start time. If they do have lights it could be whenever they want to do. If they want a transition to night race or just have a cushion in case they need to run later. But no lights you start at 1pm.
A wreck that got me was Kyle Larson's head on into the barrier at Chicago.. he went UNDER it and looked like it barely stopped him. And I agree 100% with Nascar being able to complete with NFL start times.. We have two TVs set up side by side in the garage where we watch both at the same time. I hate waiting till so late in the day. Id rather it be earlier.
I don't think 5-10 seconds would change the safety factor of the time a caution comes out, so my idea would be to make the caution button have to be held for x amount of time before the caution comes out so they have a small window to release the button and the caution come out.
It doesn't help when casuals see it then sprint to the internet to pretend to be experts and WAY overreact. That is seen by more and more casuals or people who don't watch but still have an opinion about every single thing going on. They overreact. It's a domino effect of complete morons with zero clue about what they are talking about, yelling at Nascar telling them they are dangerous and risking lives for money. It's impossible for Nascar to make the right decision because of the constant criticism they get.
@@SlimSavageBlanco Wow, do you know my shoe size too as you seem to know me so well? Pretty sure that the simplest answer is usually the correct one. You don’t think that after having a car flip that the officials finger was hovering over the big yellow button when the 19 hit the wall?? Wasn’t a critique nor yelling, just a simple statement you nice person. 🤌 Singed, One of the Complete Morons Lovin NASCAR since 1992 Note: Taking applications to join The Complete Morons Club Podcast. Regarding start times, agree 100% with JR. Short term gain, long term loss. To me it's not even about the weather. If something else is on at 1, why would I switch to NASCAR mid way? Appeal to the fan who wants to watch it as early as they can!!!!
I like the 1 pm start time. More people should be watching Nascar playoffs instead of early season football. Plus I don't watch football very much and it would never take precedence over NASCAR
@dwaynecossey4867 He was testing and they brought him to the hauler to show him the video of his wreck. They said that's the last time anyone will ever see it. His car was higher than the catch fence. Because it doesn't promote safety. And they didn't want people to see that a car could go airborne like that, would be my guess.
Totally feel that Reddick frustration. You’re winning the race. But at the end you still have to prove yourself with a drag race even if that’s not how you got to the front. But I’ll admit I do like the restart finishes sometimes
@@PitbullN.C. it does. He was almost robbed of all his great driving to get to the lead because of other people’s mistakes. I get why he did what he did. But I don’t condone it as there was drivers in those cars and they had nothing to do with the caution being brought out.
I used to be on the Nascar fan council for several years. I quit because they have made some bad choices in the last 30 years. I didn’t like it when they forced everyone to run the same car underneath with different bodies on them. I feel like the reason Dodge and some of the other brands lost the sales hundreds of thousands of cars is because there is not a true identity to being a “stock” car any longer anymore. It’s a race car with different skins. I have stage racing, because it brings drivers to push so hard to win a stage, they cause crashes which cost the owners tons of money. I hate the playoff system. The resetting of points takes away the advantage that the good things have built up all year long making other drivers equal points. It also gives people the idea of it just winning one racing each day again to a playoff for a square new. One of those can win the whole championship for the whole year but just winning one race. It is very unfair to the drivers and teams who worked hard to get thru every race all year. Nascar has lost many of the fans because the changes Nascar has made caused the fans to lose interest. The cars don’t need a belly pan because too much air under the car causes losing traction and cause crashes. Speaking of crashes, some of the fans like to see crashes, but they are very expensive. Drivers that just drive don’t care as much about keeping their car in one piece not to mention keeping themselves in one piece. Just wreck someone. It’s stupid. Take the old drivers like Richard Petty and Darrell Waltrip others that built their own cars and drove them and they helped to try to keep those cars going race after race. Too many things have changed for the worst in my opinion. They’ve taken out a lot of the bleachers and seating at racetrack because not as many people are coming. The track promoters used to do special things before the race, white motorcycle driver, jumping over cars or school buses. The best promoters are dead now, but that was a lot of reason for bigger crowds too. People got more for their money. I could go on and on. You know where I’m coming from. Thank you for reading
So I'm a fan of Nascar that began around 10 in 90-91. Huge Dale Sr fan and then, obviously, a Jr fan. Hell my name is literally Dale Jr. Swear to God. I can show my license if I have to. Anyway, around 2007-ish I was burnt out and sick of watching JJ win every race and every year. Few other things that all added up and I checked out. Didn't watch. Didn't follow it. Literally had no idea Jr had retired until I got back into it. I completely shut it out. So couple years ago I peeked at a highlight or something. Saw that Chase Elliot was racing and saw a few other things that blew my mind. Like Truex being so good. Definitely wasn't that good when I had left originally. Slowly got more and more into it and now I'm all in again like before. Didn't realize how much I missed it. I said all that to say this. I feel like I have fresh or newish eyes on the sport and stuff going on. Basically the drama. Every week it's a marriage, Nascar and Drama. Till death do us part. First I'll say I actually like the playoff and the points system. The cars are fine. I'm no mechanic or car guy. So it's not a huge deal to me. Except the number not being in the center of the door. Wtf is that about? First thing that I really notice myself paying attention to and constantly thinking about is the fans nonstop, every single thing that Nascar does getting a flood of whining and crying and bitching. On Sunday Twitter is a meca of Nascar HATE AND RAGE. Every single thing they decide and do is not just discussed and second guessed but it's ripped into millions of pieces. Glued back together and shot with a shotgun, rifle and pistol simultaneously. Then whatever tiny pieces are left get thrown in a blast furnace. And, from my POV, I am sick of it. Fans, drivers, former drivers and media need to back off by about half. Maybe more. It's kinda embarrassing. Even when they make the decision everyone wants, it doesn't matter because by the time that happens everyone has already spent two days eviscerating them. So casuals will only remember that everybody was ripping Nascar apart. They can never do anything right. The never even get an opportunity to get something right. Chill out. Let stuff play out. If you step back and really consider the insanely difficult decisions and everything else that Nascar deals with daily. Hell by the minute. Logistics=Nightmare. TV contracts and Negotiations = nightmare. Keeping the owners/drivers/fans happy simultaneously = Nightmare. Dealing with the multiple racing leagues for future drivers that all lose mega amounts of money = Nightmare. Constantly keeping up with technology and driver safety and fan satisfaction = nightmare. I could go on for hours. Nascar is probably the most difficult major sports league, in the world, to facilitate at all levels. Authority. Marketing. Logistics. Tech. Sponsors. Charters. It looks like a job that would age you very quickly. Because no decision is ever correct. Second, the drivers that are loved compared to who is hated, and the reasons for both, is corny and lame as F to me. I used to hate Jeff Gordon. But I never found myself hoping he would get fired or suspended or punished severely for something everyone else does. I've saw certain drivers have things said about them and their family that I don't think I'd ever say about any person. Even an enemy. And the extremely bs reasons why they are hated. It's absolutely cowardly as F. This is how I decide what I write on Twitter or comments. If I wouldn't say something to a drivers face, I should never say it online, where I'm safe and never have to worry about being held accountable for my words. It really turns me away from the sport when I see that crap. Fans can definitely ruin a sport. Would like to see fans be more aware of that stuff. 3. Don't see it a lot but any and every aspect of DEI hiring (and I don't mean Dale Earnhardt Inc.) and /or woke garbage. Don't want it anywhere, any time. Nothing else to say. I've got more but nobody is gonna read all this already. Maybe I'll write out a big thing and post it somewhere online. Not that anyone cares or has any idea who the F I am.
Start the races earlier. I agree with the 1pm start, across the board. I'm on the west coast and still fine with that. I'm good with watching the race at 10am-11am and still being able to do something for dinner, lol!
Imagine a team in the NBA being up by 20 points in the 4th quarter and the ref calls a foul on the winning team every possession so they can make the games close and more "exciting"
The problem with this is if the rain keeps being a consistent problem with the late start times the networks have no good reason to start the race late
When these cars go sideways on superspeedways, they essentially turn into a wing. The bottom of the car is flat as a piece of plywood. The diffuser does not work, in a sideways orientation. 200+ mph wind being diffused through the structure of the car, is very different than 200mph wind under that plate of the undercarriage of the car. There has to be a way to get rid of the air that goes underneath the bottom pan of the nextgen, when it goes sideways, or we will continue to see cars go airborne at tracks where speeds exceed 200 mph.
Easy to say don’t over react, but shouldn’t safety be proactive rather than reactive. Does it take a car going into the stands or debris breaking through a catchfense and into the crowd for the right thing to be done?
As for race start times, All-Start times are eastern standard time , if you started at 12 or 1 PM, West Coast would be at possibly 10 or 11 AM, do you think that would be worse?
I live on the west coast I wanna see the race as it happens and still get on with my day and work or race my car and not wait till 7 PST. it sucks I want you Guys to motivate me before my heat races. get Pumped up by some Kick ass driving.! My 2 Cents
I also hate the stage racing. I loved Nascar better when the points carried all year long. I feel like stage racing was only an experiment to draw fans, that is a bad thing. Don’t experiment with the lives of racecar drivers. I don’t like them saying it saying they need a playoff race situation. Teams that have run consistently good all year don’t need to have points reset to equal. One driver winning one race at the last race of the year winning the championship is a complete joke to me. It’s not fair to the teams that were leading the points all year. There were more Nascar fans in the 70’s and 80’s and part of the 90’s . I also don’t like that all cars have to be made exactly alike. People watched cars that looked very much exactly like the cars they could go buy from the show room and drive them. It’s like everybody knows the whole body and car underneath is basically the same, even though some might look like a Camaro or Mustang, it doesn’t as many people lots of car builders entering a race people rooting for different brands. I hope I’ve made some sense to at least some of you at Dirty Mo.
A few times at the end they’ve even had a little caution light at the end of the race down in the bottom right hand side of the screen…. Just wanting to bang a yellow out for a green white checker.
1:02:16 That's really tough though. It's on NASCAR. It's NASCAR's responsibility to make a car that does a good job at short tracks, Richmond can't do anything about that. Sucks for Richmond.
I was at MIS, they said it was going to take 2 hours to dry the track after the last rain, which was a lie, I watched them get the track dry twice before the race got started. Plus the track was already starting to get dry naturally before they called it. TV called the race, could've got it done Sunday.
The start time might not be fixable by nascar but the schedule could be changed stay off the east coast an high humidity hot places in the middle summer months maybe
@@sherry2136 there is a way alot of your California Phoenix Vegas type races could be this time of yr u know they cant avoid it all together but they could definitely do better
Being a aircraft afficiantsto i can relate that the bottom of the new gen car is like a aircraft wing just looking to stall when it goes the wrong way. Put flaps on the bottom side.
They literally only compete with NFl for like 2 -3 months out of the schedule! They have the whole summer to itself pretty much move the start times to 1:00
NASCAR is only competing with the NFL from September through the first week of November. This argument really is invalid other than during the NASCAR playoffs. The popularity of NASCAR grew during the 90's when the start time were at 1. It's people over thinking.
I keep saying it, you cannot defeat physics. I’m tired of NASCAR thinking they can out smart physics. The only way to avoid flipping is not racing at all. Logano saying last night at the Coke Zero 400 saying that they need to figure out how to keep the cars on the ground…stop it.
