I was wavering on this, and just like with your Behind the Claw video, you've convinced me to buy in. If I were to level a compliment to the folks at Mongoose, it would be that a lot of their mechanics and concept work is easily portable to other role-playing games. This strikes me as a sourcebook that could give GMs great ideas for any RPG. That's what attracts me to Traveller. The universe is so large and so diverse that it is essentially a general system with space travel. And that's why Truther and Believer are in this book. In Traveller, a character could be ANYTHING. With thousands of worlds to draw from, why limit what a player could be? Now, there are practical answers to that, of course. Running a "merchant game" or "pirate game" or "diplomatic game" might push towards particular careers.
I have been look for an overview/flip through for a while for this book. Thank you! I'm am looking to extend my TTRPG collection and was thinking about getting the core Traveller book and one extra. It's quite hard to find info about mongoose books IMHO. I don't like to buy without looking inside. After watching this video I think maybe the core book is enough for me, as I doubt I will get to play the game but like reading about character creation and game systems.
I like the ability to create characters from a package, I just wish there were more options for backgrounds and careers. The only way to make a trader captain, for instance, is with the desk-jockey administrator and a space background, but so much is missing. And more or better choices for mustering out might be nice, too.
I've had difficulty finding Marooned/Marooned Alone in any format (other than prohibitively-priced collectible original editions). Is it available in PDF and/or PoD anywhere?
It would be included in the Classic Traveller CD-ROM from Far Future Enterprises. I'm surprised and disappointed that it's not on DTRPG. A bunch of the CT adventures are - just not this one.
@@ardwulfslair I just ordered the CD-ROM - even though I got much of it in the Bundle of Holding deal, it will be good to have everything, and all in one convenient archive.
There's a lot of good, worthwhile stuff in this book. But yeah, I wouldn't use everything, and not using life path character creation is a total non starter.
You mentioned you think there are better ways to go with character progression or improvement than what the companion offers, I was curious what your thoughts on that were? I'm about to start a Traveller campaign and was planning on using this experience system because it does feel weird to me that there is so little character progression.
Oh, sure, but does that need to be a "career"? I think there's room for Believer, for clergy and such, but there's enough overlap that the two should have been combined.
