damn... it's been 10 years already??? I need to thank David for a few years of awesome fun with DLGs thanks to this video... I'm done with the hobby now, for various reasons, but still, makes me smile.

Just getting into DLG...this video was super helpful. David's a good teacher and I'd like to see him do another DLG advanced video. Really nice job on video production.

Trying to throw upwards will often cause the wingtip to strike the ground. David's technique is excellent and will give good high launches with minimal physical effort. There is a guy in his mid-70's at my club that outlaunches me because of his good form (I'm 25 and reasonably athletic).

Lovely to watch. Reminds me of when I was a kid and got good at launching my chuck-glider. No radio control but if I got the launch right I could get the plane to climb steeply just to the right of the breeze then as the speed reduced the rudder had a slight left set so the plane would then make wide circles slowly descending to the field.

My old neighbor competes with DLGs, before I moved I've seen him fly off a single toss for over an hour before, he's taken home dozens of trophies over the years. I really miss the guy actually, I flew freestyle drones so we both enjoyed RC and would fly together sometimes, he even gave me like $1500 worth of his deceased sons FPV gear after he died including $500 goggles and camera, a Spektrum DX7s transmitter and a decent size helicopter, he didn't fly anything but the DLGs and wanted me to have it all, I still use and fly everything he gave me to keep his son's memory alive.

Great video! May I request a build/development of a scratch built DLG? I think a lot of people would love to get into DLG but are discouraged by the complexity and expence of all the different airframes being sold. maybe of you guys could build something like the Super Gee and explain the build process, either with hotwire or foam board (I'm not really sure what would be better or what is necessary myself). Essentially, something relatively simple to build that flies relatively well would be awesome!
@joshuawfinn
@joshuawfinn 8 лет назад
+PilotPhill Having built composite aircraft like this, I really don't think the FT crew have developed the skills to do that. I mean that as no insult to them. They have techniques down that I don't but this isn't something most people have the resources to do. Supergee wings aren't too bad to build, but the fuselage is the real pain. It's best to buy there unless you're doing professional work (I am) and have the resources at your disposal already. The Fuse has to be hollow molded in one piece from a combination of carbon and Kevlar.All this said, go on rcgroups and look up the "what's in the bag?" and "you too can have a dlg for about $75" threads. I learned composites from those threads and the Phil Barns dvd's. My own DLG only goes about half the height of David's Neos, but it's fun and I've had it over 2000' up on a couple occasions. I flew a Helios2 recently and it launches about twice as high (200'+) for the same effort and technique.
@PilotPhill
@PilotPhill 8 лет назад
+joshuawfinn I see. I suppose thay makes sense as given the seeeminly vast difference in building techniques between DLGs and foam park fliers. Thanks very much Joshua. I'll have to check those threads out.

RU-vid rates this as "no mature content". True but a little harsh! Since most of your planes have about $5 worth of materials and an afternoon's work it changes the game, makes RC flying fun again. Cheers! My brother-in-law held the discus record at University level for years. Damn, bet he could launch these.

I think DLG's are great for hobby, nice to see people more active. As a lot of people in the hobby are over weight, this is some good exercise for them. Plus they are quiet so more social able in some areas, than noisy planes.

:¬) My favourite Flitetest vid so far! As I'm getting into gliding, still with my Bix2 so far, this glider would be Nirvana for me. But to keep costs down I'm going to start with building folded foam wings and stick fuselages. They won't float as good as the Neo, but they'll keep me going until I can sell the family jewels.;¬)
