Josh and Josh go slope soaring with FT Versa wings! More details and Links: flitetest.com/articles/slope-s... Thanks for watching! Check out flitefest.com for more details about our upcoming R/C event.
Glad to see Josh and Josh back together! That's how I remember when I first got back into RC flying after a 30-year hiatus, and now have my grandkids into the fun. We would watch "Josh & Josh" and then run to the Dollar Tree to get foam. Thanks guys, and God bless!! Keep up the great work!
One of my favorite FT videos of all time!!! There is something really special about seeing you guys out of the flat lands and experiencing something so different at such an incredible spot. I hope you are given the freedom and have the time to do more "on the road" episodes in the future!!!
In Germany everybody drives up to Denmark for this style of slope soaring but we build our wings way more durable. They're basically epp wings wrapped in tape so often they will never break and then covered in the neatest designs to do that combat stuff. Thermal slope soaring in the mountains is another very great thing you should check out, but these things are bigger.
Finally some old school FliteTest. I enjoyed seeing you guys again, just having plain fun without that commercial crap... This one put a smile on my face. Thanks fellows.
Great to see Josh and Josh again. I haven't sloped in about 17 years. one of the best experience I've ever had. so peaceful. started with a Zagi Thermal. had so much fun with it. might be time for a new one. thanks guys for the memories!
You guys brought back a bunch of awesome memories from childhood. My Dad and I as well as my family flew Gliders and Sailplanes long time ago. We built and flew balsa and spruce kits to give you an idea. But really loved it. Keep dog fighting on the ridge bros. Thanks.
It was so AWESOME to have Josh and Josh back together again. Great episode on Slope Soaring too. Very fun to watch you guys reactions to controlling your planes. Very enjoyable. Hope to see J & J together more.
FT Versa is my favorite plane to fly! I have built over 10 Versas with 3 Blunt noses hanging on my wall. Thank you FliteTest for making the plans free and posting videos on how to build every plane on your site!!!
This takes me back to the 80's when I had many years of slope soaring with the Bromley Soaring Club in SE London UK. We used to fly off the South Downs. Inbuilt and flew many balsa & ply aircraft - both purchased designs and own designs. Foam wings were just coming in then but foam board was unheard of as were electric motors. Looking forward to getting the courage to go back into the hobby and built by first foam board plane. Until then I shall carry on with my Mavic Pro :).
Nice to see you two flying together, and slope soaring at that too! I had a riot when Peter brought out the at beast and was actually flying pretty well with it. Hope the hand gets better soon,so you can get back to loads more flying again!
JOSH AND JOSH: BACK IN THE SADDLE AGAIN! WOOHOO! What a fantastic video! I loved watching you guys slope soaring! Its so peaceful and its one of those RC experiences that has to be shared. Watching that giant ole cargo plane slope soaring was a hoot! Its great that you shared it with us! Thank you! I really want to get my ohana (Family in Hawaiian) into slope soaring, but I have a lot of ohana that are scared of heights! lol Someday maybe. Anyways, thank you again for posting this fantastic vid, guys!
I lived in Long Beach Calif, and it was slope soaring that got me interested in RC. Back in about 1979, the favorite slope soaring machine (and the most acrobatic) was the simple foam airplane that you threw, and it would do a loop, and bop you in the back of the head, and typically break... lol they just cut out the spots for all the RC gear, and they were ready to go.... and boy they were fast.... Thankfully I left Calif in 1982, just after skydiving at 16 yrs old, moving to WI, and then spending 16 years in the Army.... now I'm back into RC again at 49 yrs old, so it's never to late to play LOL.
Great job guys! I actually learn to fly slope soaring then got into powered flight... slope soaring was super great to really get to know a plane... by the time I got to powered flight I had very good flying skills. By the way... I got into flying wings thanks to flite test! Keep up the good work ;-)
It was great to run into you guys at Habit Burger in Alameda. I'm looking forward to more west coast series videos. We don't have any Poison Ivy out here on the West coast, but we do have lots of Poison Oak! Sorry if you picked up a little in the bushes. It grows everywhere!
Great to see 2xJosh but I found you guys only this year so still going through old material and Josh was never gone for me! I'd love to see more slope soaring. You won't need an awesome slope like that, even a sand dune would do. Perhaps a dedicated small soarer might be a future challenge? I sloped a few wings but prefer something with a tail (Current is a glass fibre fuse, balsa wing V-tail at 800mm)
you guys should go to a slope combat event, TONS of fun when you get over 15 planes all trying to hit each other with the wind whipping all around. nothing like it :D i go to the Tri-cities Washington area for the main combat event in spring.
Slope soaring is the coolest. Motor-less flight is my jam right now. Just got a gentle lady kit at a swap meet and cannot wait to build it and make a DIY high start to get it up for some thermal surfing.
Hey Josh, With your hand injury it would really be a great time for you to find (with your resources and contacts) to help and show the different helps for those of us who luv this hobby while having "permanent" disabilities (loss of fingers, hands, etc) and are struggling......We need you.... and your team! Really!! I am sure It would be greatly appreciated. or if not please at least point us to the sources available who can help us. Thanks in advance DannyW
Awesome having Josh Scott back with the boys, great character. I fly hang gliders & mostly slope soar, that is the next level, even better than FPV, actually being up there. That looks like a great site for it.
since park flying at all the parks in my town is banned and prohibited, this is one of the few options of flying I have so i am super glad flite test caught on to this awesome style of flight
under 301 club! it was great to meet you guys on tuesday! will there be an episode on that? the same thing that happened to peter at the end happened to me with my MG today. hopped two fences for it, but the googly eyes are still wiggling and alive!
I learned to fly doing slope soaring and still do as much as can do (or as the weather allow us). basically the nearest the ridge the most performance (ie speed) you get but also bumpier.. and away from the ridge is the cleanest... speed is pick by doing sideways runs (piloning) .. you can go for hours if the wind holds.. i have done flights of 2 hours and a half non-stop where ultimatelly you are the endurance limit (can get pretty chilly standing up in that wind that long)
I could be wrong but that looks like the spot near the entrance to the Muir Beech Overlook. If it is, you could have gone another hundred yards or so north and you would have been a small clearing that most people (in my experience anyway) fly from. It gives you a little more room for landing and puts a little more distance between you and Hwy1. Either way, awesome video!
On the other side of a ridge I've heard of dynamic soaring where you use the vortex at the interface of the wind going over a ridge and the still air behind it as a source of energy and build up insane speeds looping in it. I'd love to see good footage of that. Nevermind, you mentioned it later.
I cant believe its been 4 years since the last one. Does that mean Ive been flyin for 4 years ? This is the sort of video that has me hankering to go flyin ..now :-)
Having a bit of fun there. If those models you are gliding in the wind like that had engines and batteries, would one still be able to get practical gliding out of the system like that when the engine is off ? Light weight battery small engine.
A really fun episode guys especially the opening with Alex fulling on his face in to poison ivy OCH! LOL.BTW its very cool to see Josh Scott back flying behide the sticks I would to see him in a newer episode bringing back ''T J-Scott'' with him flying it if he hasn't crashed it already that is? LOL.Also Josh I hope your hand gets better soon.
