Float fishing for tench with soft pellets on the hook. Waggler float fishing close to a reed bed, playing the Tench away from the reeds and stopping the float drift.

Great vid Richard. Funny thing as a friend and i was float fishing a really big lake and was using sweetcorn it was known for tench and bream. Well we must of caught over 60 perch between us and at the same time about 6 pbs from. Mine was 2.6lb at the time right up to 3.6lb and that is still my biggest to this day. Sadly council took all fish from Lake about 10 yrs ago don’t know why. But anyway im fishing couple of lakes now that hold perch to just over 5lb. Sad thing my friend wont be there as he past away 3yrs ago. Then again he could be there in spirit lol

Sorry to hear about the passing of your friend. As for those 5lb Perch, may I suggest prawns in the winter and or spinning in the new year. Best of luck.

Amateur Angling can’t fail with prawns and just been told carp in this lake take them. This is very true as improve your course fishing done an article on this lake and produced a big carp on prawns

Nice video there Mr. Amateur Angling! just wondering why do you prefer an unloaded to a loaded waggler? its not often you catch Perch on corn, and in fact i never have caught one on corn, at least not hooked in the mouth...only managed to foul hook one when fishing with corn lol, and that was a snake lake that was full of Perch! was catching them one a chuck with maggots. Rotating lines is a must, i've found you should always have a minimum of two lines and ideally keep them both fed which i always do when pole fishing. The other day i was just on the method feeder all day and fished a line about 30 or so meters out close to an island and when that would stop producing proper bites i'd fish a short line a bit to my left just a short underarm chuck out and was into fish there straight away and thats where i caught my PB, a 12lb 7oz Mirror. Should have broke that PB again straight after that one as i lost a bigger fish to a hook pull but it can happen. Hope to see more videos from you mate, maybe a method session? tight lines.

The little Perch in that lake will eat anything, they will become more predatory as they get older. I use unloaded Waggler simply because I like to decide for myself where the weight goes. Being able to distribute the weight in different shotting patterns to suite the swim, is for me, very important. Loaded floats have a place, but I only use them when I feel the circumstances call for them. That said, If you prefer a loaded Waggler, then go for it. Best of luck.

Thats what i thought you was going to say regards the preference for an unloaded waggler. I have actually only fished a conventional unloaded waggler once since November, and i fished a pellet waggler (loaded) for the first time a few weeks ago. I say when fishing shallow like you do with a pellet waggler thats when its best to use a loaded waggler, though i'd like to hear your thoughts on that. I do a lot of float fishing but on the pole and pretty much throughout the summer all my shotting patterns have been pretty much the same using one dropper about 4 inches from the hook and then a bulk about 5 inches above the dropper.

I will often use a bodied Waggler in shallow water with rod and line. Float choice and shotting patterns are always determined by where you are fishing and the weather. The shotting pattern you mention is fine for fishing on the bottom for most species.

What tackle rod and reel are you using

I'm using a ten year old Greys float rod and an old Shakespeare Mach 3 reel. Still got the rod, but now use a Cadence reel.

brilliant! do you think the perch were taking the corn because of the drift movement of the bait? iv had erch on bread but only sightfishing for them and twitching the bread i only discovered this works because i was sightfishing perch with twitched worm and ran out of worm haha
@AmateurAngling
@AmateurAngling 6 лет назад
I think you may well be right, they are simply attacking anything that moves. Thanks for your comment, best of luck.

Amateur Angling just had another thought. possibly they are thinking the corn is a fish egg? corn looks similar to fish eggs flies. unless they have just learnt that its food and their digestion can handle it

It's hard to say, all I know is that when they started to show, the Tench were gone.

Amateur Angling if you have any tips on homemade ground baits, binders flavours, ratios etc this would be good. I live in Bulgaria and fish large wild waters mostly for carp roach perch and skimmers (nothing like a commercial water) the GB available are either not good quality or very expensive for the UK bait companies imported products. Any advice would be greatly received. Won't be getting out until at least April as all the lakes/ reservoirs are frozen solid so plenty of time to prepare.

The sort waters you have described, may well respond to a simple cereal ground bait. I use brown crumb as the base, white crumb as a binder, oats as a strong binder and sausage rusk as an active ingredient. Ground bait for me is just a useful medium to transport feed to the fish. I mix these simple ingredients in different ratios to get feed bait in to the swim as needed. Start your experiments with a mix of: Four parts brown crumb Two parts white crumb One part sausage rusk Mix dry, add water slowly, riddle, leave to soak for 20 minutes, add more water if needed. This should be able to carry a good amount of bait (casters, corn, pellets etc) down through 2m of water. Exchange the rusk for oats in deeper water. I doubt I will make a ground bait film, because when I use ground bait in any of my films, I say what the mix is. Hope this helps, best of luck.

Amateur Angling thank you for that advice I will give it a go. With the following question you will realise who the real amateur angler is :-). The brown and white crumb, I take it this is bread? Do you make this yourself or do you buy it? Sorry have taken up fishing again after a very long timeout, and I can't remember using groundbait back in the 60/70s, any advise is greatly appreciated and will obviously help. Once again when the weather warms up another video please.

@AmateurAngling 5 лет назад
That's right, ordinary brown and white bread crumb which I buy in 5kg bags. I suggest you try various ratios and mixes in a bucket of water at home, to better understand how it behaves in a lake or river.
