Float Ledgering with a Polaris Float. A few weeks ago, I produced a video showing you how to use a normal waggler float for float ledgering in relatively shallow water. But what happens if you are fishing waters which are too deep to comfortably fish with a normal waggler?
The answer lies in using either a Polaris or Locslide float. These floats are specifically designed for this purpose. Watch the video to see how its done.

Great video again Den! One of my club’s waters is 25 - 30 feet deep two rod lengths out. The only way to float fish the bottom is with a sliding float, I use the locslide but the principle is identical. I mainly fish it with a feeder but sometimes you can’t beat seeing a float go under! Like you did, I often use a cage feeder but a maggot feeder works really nicely as well. Those mullet look like really good sport, I imagine much like a decent trout.

This brought back fond memories. I had one of these in my tackle bag and used it once for river bream where I couldn’t hold bottom in a deep fast flow , too deep for trotting, and only had a float rod. It worked really well and I had an excellent haul during the session… but then I never used it again, and I honestly do not know why. After an almost 25 year absence from the bank I recently returned to the sport, two weeks ago. When sorting out good kit from bad I found one of these floats ….. and ignored it. Today I found your video. Needless to say the Polaris has been promoted back into my tackle box.

I use those kind of floats all the time, I used to buy them from Mick Thill at sport fishing shows in the states, he had older stock when he had control over the quality. I also purchased some Match floats from Britan and Italy from him, along with a great selection of spade hooks and a fantastic selection of line, i didn't realize they made line that light. Ended up buying my fishing supplies from Tackle Bargains UK. Now after watching your float making vids, I might have to try it myself.

My river Carp fishing down here will be somewhat similar, so any advice or thoughts on modifications to the new feeder would be greatly appreciated.
@patrickwhaley4111
@patrickwhaley4111 2 года назад
I've already watch it, looks like an excellent idea, for slower moving rivers +lakes, I'm not sure about faster cuttents though, but l think I'd be taking a patent out on the design as someone at Korda will be selling them for £3.00 a time next year if they see the video. I make my own feeders for the fast stretches of Trent both none and tidal, with 4,5,6,7,8oz lead moulds and 30mm plastic hair curlers. To buy them at this weight would cost a fortune, that's when you can get them at that weight. With the speed of the current in most areas of the river, its usually a 3 to 6 ft hook length from the feeder to compensate for the drift of the loose feed from the open ended feeder. I'm not sure if the cup on your hybrid feeder could be slightly larger on one side to act as a 'current guard' to keep the current from sweeping the loose feed away from the hook bait,but if would obviously require testing. Over here there's are no method feeders of such large size to be of us on the faster sections of the Trent. Most anglers if not using large open ended feeders use large gripper leads with PVA socks for loose feed. A successful trick is to use two, one on the hook bait and one on the gripper lead, so you get a line of loose bait.
@FishingwithDen

Hi. my Camcorder is slightly different to yours. I believe I have a PJ410, but they are probably more or less the same. I just set mine to record in 1080p Resolution and that's about it. I have also downloaded the imaging Edge App on my phone. This enables you to connect to it via WiFi. You can then see what the camera is seeing without having to bend down to see the main camcorder screen. It also allows you to Zoom in/out using the App. Be careful with the Audio though. I have my camcorder on the front leg of my seatbox to zoom in on the float. This means that the audio isn't the best. If you are using it as a general camera, like I use my GoPro, it should be fine.

Hi Den! There's something magical about watching a float. A waggler virgin, I tried a waggler float last summer at my local lake (watched your videos on it!). A huge carp took my bait on the drop, very first cast and dove into the lillies! 1 minute later my 6lbs line snapped and my very expensive Garbelino float was last seen looking very smug mocking me in the middle of the lilly patch! So, my question. I am a disabled angler and I'm not looking to land huge fish, so I've tied a few helicopter rigs with 4" hooklengths size 12 hooks, a twizzled boom and a feeder on the end. I was wondering if I could use this float ledger method on this rig? I have some weighted and unweighted wagglers, could I use them running freely? Or do I really need to get a specialist polaris float? Thanks, Ceri.
@FishingwithDen
@FishingwithDen 2 года назад
Hi Ceri. If the water you are fishing is the usual 4ft deep, you can use a normal waggler to fish the Float Ledger rig. You can even go deeper than this, but I would say that 8ft is probably the deepest I would want to go with a normal waggler. I did a video on this too. Hi den again and thank you for the link for this video. The one thing thats slightly confuses me with using the slider is as far as i know you still have to plumb the depth initially but how can you plumb the depth when may be deeper then the rod your using? When using a bomb mainly how light can you get away it like 2 swan shots weight wise? Last question do you know the actual float you were using for this video

Hi Martin. Are you talking about a Slider Float or a Polaris Float here. They are completely different, so I need a bit more information please.
@martinhassall7884
@martinhassall7884 10 дней назад
Hi den sorry it didn't really make sense when reading back i was taking about them both . The first part was about the slider and my question is when trying to find the depth and if the depth is deeper still then your rod is it just about adjusting the stop knot as the slider float once in the water will travel up and will only stop once it it's the stop knot so it can take a period of time ? Yes I know the polaris float is completely different and finds its depth which I think appeals to me more as it will find the depth quicker and there's no stop knot needed going through it the rings. My question about the polaris which may be depending on what size polaris float you use but what the lightest wait you can get away with on one of these floats to still work? And what polaris float were you using on the video? Den your videos are really great to watch and I'm very impressed mate .
@FishingwithDen
@FishingwithDen 10 дней назад
@@martinhassall7884 Hi Martin. All I do to plumb the depth with a Slider Float is put a shot (SSG or AAA) either on the hook or immediately above it and then cast out as normal. If it sinks, your too shallow and if it floats your too deep. If the float does show above the water, take a foot of depth off and cast again until the float sinks. Repeat this process until the float just sinks, then you can add just a little more depth until the bait is on the bottom and the float tip sits normally. With regard to the Polaris Floats, the one I was using has a sticker on the side which says 6 - 10ft 3/4oz. I hope that helps.

They are great fun. Not particularly slimy, but they do have an odd spiky bit here and there.

@@FishingwithDen having researched some on here I see they’re a sea fish. Do you get many freshwater venues with these in? I’m a carp fisherman in Essex but definitely interested in finding somewhere with these lil buggers in. Cheers.

@@FishingwithDen hi again Den, I tried this for the first time recently and found myself unsure as to where my lead and hook are in relation to the float. The way I saw it was if I’ve trapped the line before it hits the water (like usual) so as to avoid any tangles etc then let the bail arm off after a few seconds settle, would the float be rising up vertically or at a 45 degree angle? I need to know in order to catapult bait in the right area in relation to the float. It was anything from 10 to 20 yards out where the depth is 10-12ft, so I don’t really know how to figure out the likely distance beyond the float that the hookbait would be laying..but if it’s sliding up at a 45 degree angle or so then by the time it’s come up all of 12ft it could actually be a fair way away from the hookbait no? Would it make a difference altering the initial distance between float and lead before casting or not? Any tips on that ? Cheers
