I was fortunate enough to take a tour/cruise on the Rhine a number of years ago while we were visiting my partners family in Frankfurt. It was a beautiful day and various stops along the way, coupled with the scenery, medieval castles, vineyards and small towns was such a memorable experience.

There is a trick to going through locks more easily, especially with a small crew. It is necessary to pass the moorings under a cleat before taking it in hand rather than taking the the moorings directely. The moorings must always slide under the cleat. So you have twice the strength. This allows to control more easely the boat when there is a lot of water movement. From a lock keeper in French Brittany :-)

The fact that Aladino is a skilled sailor and a skilled multilinguist at the same time, makes this boat trip through the continent much easier. On the other hand Maya's soft husky voice in combination with her lyrical approach in reciting your daily adventures, appeases the harshness of german aesthetics that you have to sail through. You guys, you are doing a fantastic job in creating those videos, and I am looking always forward to seeing the next episode. BRAVO!!!!!!! BRAVISSIMO!!!!!!!!!!

I'm with @Dietmar on this one: what "harshness of German aesthetics" are you talking about? If I am not mistaken, they were travelling the Rheinseitenkanal up until Breisach. That waterway is on the French side. ;-) Just saying ... blame the French ... LOL ;-))))))

This time, a fascinating rather than beautiful vlog. One thing that is so clear to me, though Maya, is what a beautiful speaking voice you have and the poetry with which you describe your adventures at the beginning and end of each vlog. Have you ever considered recording audio books? I would listen to every one you did! 😄

@@SailingMagicCarpet I must agree with Pamy above, no need to write your own book just yet as some one recently told me there's a whole plethora of classic literature available online which is no longer copyright so am guessing anyone would be free to recite and record them for later sales. A good narrator can make a good book even better! Good luck on your journey.

Large locks are inherently dangerous places. They seem to have become safer over the years, but they can still be dangerous. You guys did well. When I was about 15, I was witness to a double drowning at the Ouistreham locks on the Caen Canal (Canal de Caen à la Mer). There's a swing bridge across the main lock. It was opened to allow a ship to traverse the lock. People gathered around the lock to watch. When the ship powered out and the swing bridge closed, a man and his 12 year old son were swept into the lock. The water was still very turbulent from the prop wash and they both drowned. It was over 55 years ago, but I can still remember it.

To be fair: it took me a while to understand it too. It seems like the lock master expected the SMC crew to arrive before Nevada and if that were the case, SMC would have to wait. Out of curiousity: the Rhine branches out in a delta soon after you enter the Netherlands. at the first fork, you can steer left and go to Nijmegen or right to go to Arnhem. If you decide on the latter: there's another choice to make, steer left to go to Arnhem or steer right to sail to the IJsselmeer. Strictly speaking: if your mission is to follow the Rhine, you should set course to Arnhem and from there downstream.

Aladino is Italian and Swiss, so it is normal for him to speak Swiss German, German, French, Italian and English. Quite normal for many Swiss. He is a very good sailor and linguist with a wonderful story telling wife.

Looking forward to next episode,we visited Strasbourg last year a little more luxuriously than Magic Carpet on board river cruiser A-Rosa Flora,moored up at Kelh & went into Strasbourg by tram,I am sure you may pass"Flora" on your way downstream.There are some wonderful stops along the Rhine, you may well be spoilt for choice. I guess you like the smaller places which are good but we had a lovely day in Mainz, a little bigger but a lovely town. wish we were doing same this year but Covid 19 has curtailed that . Certainly envy the rest of your journey north. Hope we manage to get back on the Continent next year. Have a great trip. E&B

This was a terrific video. While the commercial traffic and infrastructure may have dampened your enthusiasm for that section, I find commerce boat traffic and the buildings and river structures supporting it quite fascinating. It is like watching the growth of civilization due to the ease of transportation along rivers.

Really enjoyed this episode maya/aladino, I spent a lot of time on the rhine river & the neckersulm river, mostly walking up & down the river paths. It's the only way to see history up close. I lived in siegelsbach army depot, near heilbronn. A lot of times we would just walk because we felt like it. I was surprised to find out aladino spoke german! Wow! What a wonderful gift to have, sure makes traveling a lot easier. I missed hearing our man from ireland always saying 'Alles Klar' when he spoke to the locals on the telephone at the post. He was in charge of repairs at the little base. Funny, the things you don't know that you are missing isn't it? I do know some german, enough to get by on, but that's about it. Can't wait for the next episodes through germany. Thank you so very much. Danke shonde fur dieser video!

Great video, keep in mind that you need to be inside the lock in time, the commercial traffic can't wait, they need the tourist sailors (with all respect) to act quickly and acoid delays.

I lived in Koblenz on the Rhine River in 2002-2004, it was a very busy river. The cargo ships are 24/7 on the move, and most are over 100 meters in lenght pumping out 2000hp, theyre usually crewed by a family, yhey park their cars on them too, whats crazy is that it uses a Scania truck engine for its bow thrusters. 😂 Btw, halt is German for stop and the lock Keeper warned you about the wash behind the ship as you came into the lock. Im surprised they didn't build a smaller lock next to the ship ones. The rhine has lovely castles on its course, but, its a water super highway linking Rotterdam, the worlds busiest port, you want to be on your game as you navigate it as the ship creep uo on you really quick. Id say magic carpet was like a cork in water around them.

Going through locks alongside commercial barges is a struggle that would normally not need to be : the regulations tell to tie a boat with 2 ropes in a lock and cut the propeller. Unfortunately the practice is to get lazy and keep the prop on and tie the the boat with only 1 rope. This is contrary to the rules. This common irrepect of the rules did lead a commercial barge to destroy a gate lock recently in Belgium, with 1 month to get it repaired, blocking everyone on the river...

I was thinking it might've been a good idea when the lock keeper asked them to hurry to have told him that you were waiting for the barge's prop wash to stop but that he wasn't cutting it, the lock keeper might have asked the skipper to make fast properly and cut his prop wash like he should've done in the first place.

As I said in a previous post I hitch hicked on the Rhine in the 70s on a barge and your right the scenery changes often. Wineries, industry and towns of kinds but it will remain a wonderful adventure. Stay safe.

Congrats!! You did it very well. Maybe it is worth to know that the big ships are obligated to disengage their clutch as soon as they are tied up. Mostly the prop wash is not an issue but especially for the small pleasure craft it is. As there is not a lot of pleasure craft in this area I can imagine that some of the skippers forget to disengage quickly. So you can ask the lock master (or the skipper) to do so. It will help them also to have a quick passage. I am looking forward to your further video’s and to see you entering the Netherlands. Greetings from “Oud Alblas”.

Put in it's historic context, the significance of the Rhine cannot be stressed enough. Just as the german Autobahn system is pretty boring, seemingly endless and monotonous, but it still leads you past places like Neuschwanstein ... which seems to make the hazzle worth while every time :-) On a side note: IF Annika isn't deterred from living aboard after going up the Rhine, Lucca might be in luck ;-) Fair winds, guys!!

Except for the fact, that Neuschwanstein is several hundred kilometers away from the River Rhine 😅 But anyway, along a certain stretch, there is a castle on almost every hill. 😊
