Floetrol vs Olga Soby's Secret Pouring Recipe

Which pouring medium is best for #fluidart painting? In this video I mixed up 2 sets of paints, one with #floetrol and water, and the other with #olgasoby Secret Pouring Recipe (Sony Mix). I used the exact same colors and brands of paints for each set of colors. I mixed them to a similar consistency and poured them in the same composition in the same order. Then, using the #hairdryer and #blowouttechnique, I blew the paints out and used my fingers to create a lovely composition.
Immediately you can see that the paintings turned out quite differently! Each pouring medium has its pros and cons, which I will detail for you in the second half of the video.

18:56 My advice for acrylic pouring beginners
▶️ How to mix your paints with floetrol:
• How to mix your paints...
Floetrol pros:
* Less expensive (in the US)
* Created a graduated flecked pattern, and more lacing,
* Dries flat with little to no texture
Floetrol cons:
* Has a strong odor
* NOT archival
* Expensive / not available in other countries
Soby Mix pros:
* More control over where / if you get cells
* Archival, means it won’t yellow or deteriorate over time
* Comes with very specific directions for how to mix and achieve the correct consistency
* Products available in many countries
* Various brands / options available (not specific to one brand of pouring medium or paint brand)
Sony Mix cons:
* Steeper learning curve
* Uses more paint than the Floetrol mix does

I liked your comparison. I also took Olga’s course. For people starting out you might think taking a course is a bit expensive but for me I didn’t have a clue of what I was doing and wasted a lot of money on supplies. Then after a year or more of still being confused I took her course and learned so much about paint in general. I believe Olga’s work speaks for itself. Thank you for sharing Becca❤

I took Olga course, it was my birthday present from my family. It was amazing and I got so much out of it, not just how to mix paints! So get your family to put their money together for a present you will really enjoy and help you. Hopefully, I'm going to ask for Olga's resin course for Christmas, I don't really want slippers or chocolates, Olga Solby anytime for me!

Olga’s recipe is nice but so is mine. Australian Floetrol is over $60.00 in Australia but it doesn’t have an odour or lumps and it doesn’t dull colours. I only use it in my CA so it goes on forever. I love Olga but my husband is my carer. He had a medical episode a couple of months ago and now has heart damage. We are waiting for our Government to start home assist so we can stay in our home. We only need a couple of hours help a week but our income is now small. The only thing I ever do is stay in my bed, paint or see one of my Doctors. I did love the comparison. Painting keeps me sane and I cannot afford Olga as much as I would love to watch her. Thank you.

Great video! It’s nice seeing the comparison. I wanted to do this, but never got around to it. I’ve taken Olga’s course, and it was really detailed. Probably the most detailed course I’ve ever taken. Definitely worth the money. Unfortunately, after trying to get the recipe to work for me for months, I ended up switching back to floetrol. I felt like I had way more control with my floetrol recipe, and my paintings dried perfectly flat. Now I’m currently trying different recipes and experimenting. There really is no right or wrong, just what you prefer! 🤗
@beccaharkinsart
@beccaharkinsart 7 месяцев назад
yes, exactly, no right or wrong, just preference! I've adapted Olga's recipe to be thicker than she teaches in her course, because I find that it helps me have more control, like you said! I have even started experimenting with different proportions and brands. I feel like the knowledge has opened up a whole new world of experimentation for me. Nat, your paintings are stunning They stop my scroll every time! Keep up the good work. :-)

@@beccaharkinsartI probably should have done more testing, but it was exhausting for me, and I just ran out of energy. I did try thicker at first, and then went thinner and both didn’t work out. Even got help from Olga directly. I definitely learned a lot through everything, and sometimes things just don’t work out! These last few months I’ve been disconnected with my art, so I appreciate that you say that! Means a lot to me. You’ve had so much success with Olga’s mixture, and I love seeing your results!

Love your example. I have taken Olga's course as a total beginner. Only started a month ago. It has been a huge learning curve and I scrape about 40% of what I have done as it does not come out nearly like Olga's. I do not get nearly the cells that Olga does and much fewer than Floetrol usage. I used her consistency standard, so not sure where the problem lies. Tried Floetrol a couple times but like you said, the colors were dull and I wasn't as happy with the results. Thank you SO MUCH for posting as it's frustrating for a beginner to know which recipe to use. So many choices out there!

If those of us who don't have RU-vid channels had any idea of the work involved making a video, we wouldn't complain about a charge for a class. Add to that, the cost of all the paints, mediums and canvases. Many RU-vid channels offer a Patreon subscription. It's up to each individual to decide if they want to pay for the channel. Besides, I thought this was supposed to be a place where negativity has no place. Suggestions, yes. Criticism, no. HAPPY THANKSGIVING to all American viewers!

I think it depends on your composition and the effects you're trying to achieve. Either one of these products is going to do. Its job Olga has put a lot of time and effort into creating the medium to achieve what she needs and what she desires. I say hats off to Olga for coming up with her secret recipe and she should be absolutely ecstatic. I would never create a video to put out.That is actually comparing which product is best.Because either one of them is a very good idea.It depends on the individual and your composition

Thank you - I did get value from your time! What did you think of the pewter? I prefer the effects of the Soby recipe, though I really liked the rose composition of your first pour. I've taken Olga's course and am chomping at the bit to mix my medium. My husband and I need to finish rearranging our home; and this pertains to your video because of cost of mediums. Keeping in mind that a gallon is nearly four liters: Due to spatial constraints, I have a tiny place to mix and a second tiny space across the room to pour. When straining Floetrol on Saturday, I spilled almost a whole quart (strained into a smaller container to make it easier to hold). Can you imagine spilling a quart of Olga's medium (either group) on a concrete floor?? I'm now out nearly $5.50 USD for the cost to replace the gallon jug, plus sales tax, plus the time to pick up the in-stock item at the Home Depot in stock two miles from my home (AND time I'll lose browsing 🤣). Compare that to the cost of a quart of Olga's ingredients (which would take me 2-3 hours to earn) which I would receive in a minimum of three days, IF it's in stock at my local art shop. (I had to wait three weeks after taking the course to buy the bottles that now taunt me, waiting to be mixed...) BUT for now, I'm not blowing out my pours. For the time being, I'm doing straight pours, swipes, flip cups, etc., and while I know that the Soby recipe will be superior to Floetrol + commercial pouring medium and silicone, it's better than not pouring at all.

I LOVED the pewter! I'm using it with different colors today and it is just blowing my mind. Silver never did it for me, but the pewter is the perfect mix between gold and silver in my opinion. I'm so sorry to hear about the lost Floetrol! Ugh, what a heart break! I fell victim to the time Olly's was selling Floetrol for pennies on the dollar. I bought 3 gallons and brought them home only to realize that they had gone rotten and smelled like rotten eggs. Use whatever pouring medium makes you happy with your work! Just keep painting!

Hi Becca. Thank you for your work and the videos. May I ask you some advice please? (I’m French, sorry for my English). I am a beginner in painting, and in pour painting. I love what you do, what Olga Solby do and what Molly artistery do and Rinske Douna too. I want to do the courses, but with Molly and Olga new arts lessons, I don’t know which one is better for me. Do you think that it is better to start with the « A to Z courses » or with Olga new arts lessons? Or with Molly’s new art courses? Knowing that I am a beginner and that I love Rinske Douna flowers and Molly’s composition when she is using haut dryer better than knife swipes. Do things you learn in « from A to z »courses change, since they develop other courses?
@beccaharkinsart
@beccaharkinsart 7 месяцев назад
Great questions! I have never taken the a to z course so I don’t know exactly what is in it, but I think they teach the hair dryer method using only paint and water. If you like what Molly and Rinske create with paint and water I would recommend starting with the a to z course because it will teach you the foundations you need for all the techniques.
@lostmypassword1
@lostmypassword1 3 месяца назад
I have taken the A to Z course and Olgas secret recipe course as well. I think it's best to start with the A to Z course. I like that you get 3 for 1 with Olga, Molly and Rinske teaching the class. You'll learn a variety of pouring mixes and why as well as a great variety of techniques. It can be overwhelming so just remember, you can watch each sections as many times as you need/want. I learned a lot and then started experimenting with first water mixed with paint, then Floetrol and lastly Olga's recipes. If you're just starting out - water and paint is good. Most important (and hardest - I'm still learning) is paint consistency and how much paint for the base. Also, I have the same blowdryer and am still learning how to use forced air as a "brush" - so that takes practice as well. You'll overwork a lot of your paintings which is good, it allows for experimentation with finger swipes, tilting, etc. I've also used silicone drops to get an explosion of cells and had a lot of fun with that. I found that once I finish with 2-3 coats of gloss varnish, the colors from all pouring mediums pop. I'm using American Floetrol from Home Depot and purchased the filter that attaches to strain the medium off Amazon. I had quite a bit of Artist Loft 1 paints so practice with those (since they're cheap and I already had a lot) before working with the more expensive brands. Olga does teach how you can mix cheaper paints with more expensive paints in her secret recipe course too.

I use Australian floetrol which has no odour and no lumps in it. I get beautiful bright colours. I notice that you did add more paint to olgas recipe then when you used the floetrol. The australian floetrol makes beautiful cells, which you can control. I am lucky to be living in Australia where floetrol is easy to get. Regards Glenis.

Floetrol is app $20 per gallon and readily available on Amazon and some Home Depot stores. Olga's course, however, is a minimum of $179 on SALE. She's an incredible Fluid Artist ,but this comparison feels a lil bit disingenuous when you imply Olga's recipe is more accessible/less costly. I admire her work and yours, but I'm not about to pay close to $200 for a Paint Pour Recipe; I already do Fluid Art & was interested to see this comparison strictly re: the recipe. Thank You so much for your work/time to create the comparison for us~ Best Regards~

I understand your perspective. When I say it is more accessible I mean in other countries. I’ve heard floetrol can be upwards of $60/gal in Canada and is not even available in most other countries. Olga’s course isn’t for everyone. I created this video to help people decide if it is right for them.

Do you think Olga gets more cells due to the thinness of her medium?
@beccaharkinsart

I don’t think it is due to the thinness. I mix my paints thicker and still get cells. It is due to the densities of the paints in relationship to each other.

This was a really cool video! Thank you for the comparison. I think you did a great job being impartial too! Without divulging any ingredients, would you be able to estimate the cost of the Soby mix? For say a gallon of her pouring medium vs a gallon of floetrol. Both in USA?
@beccaharkinsart
@beccaharkinsart 7 месяцев назад
You’re very welcome! I’ve been trying to figure out how to calculate this. I would say overall I think Olga’s recipes come out to be about 25-30% more expensive than floetrol, but that is mainly because the way I mix them, thicker, I end up using more paint than I do when I mix them with floetrol. If you mix them really thin like she does, it is probably about the same or maybe a little more.

Honestly there is not much difference between ANY medium to another except using glue. Glue is yuck, it stinks and gets worse in the bottle the longer you have it. I use paint, GAC 800 by Golden, and a mix of water/floetrol floetrol ISNT necessary. Rinske Downa just uses water and paint and it hasn’t affected her at all. Floetrol mattifies the look of the dried paint even more. With amazing teachers out there in the YT world like Tammy Anderson, Kanella Ciracco and Lisa from Harmony House there’s No need to pay money to learn paint pouring. I’ve been doing this for 4 years, all aspects of it, it’s trial and error, experimenting with things and understanding that a medium is a binder for the acrylic paint to adhere to and a thinner. That’s it! Practice increases your performance and you become more and more experienced in your techniques. If you WANT to pay for a class then good on you, if you don’t or can’t then there are PLENTY of other people to learn off of. Take notes when you pour, layer in different ways and note the out come. Tammy Anderson has a free downloadable paint consistency chart to test your paints on. It’s PERFECT!!! Gina Delucca is another fab teacher and has free tools to use as well. It’s art, it’s in the eye of the beholder, it’s meant to be enjoyed both by viewing and creating. It’s not a competition, let it bring you peace and happiness not stress and frustration. Tammy covers the basics of paint pouring in all forms and she has MANY videos on medium mixes. She’s HANDS Down the best teacher. Kanella is the queen of measurements. If you want measurements on a scale over 2:1 parts then visit her channel. Seek and ye shall find!!! lol

I'm sorry this video made you feel like your work in somehow inadequate! That was not my intention at all. I get a lot of questions about if the new pouring medium is worth it, so I thought it would be helpful to create a video to compare and contrast the pros and cons. Did you know the famous artist Basquiats created his paintings on FedEx boxes? It is not so much about what the painting is on or what it is made of that makes it adequate, but that YOU created it, that it comes from a place inside you, and that it brings you joy and resonates feelings and emotions to anyone who has the opportunity to experience your art. I hope that you will continue to create for creation sake no matter what pouring medium you use!

It's one thing to charge from the beginning, but to wait till thousands of people have shown nothing but love & support is just a huge turn off. If half of you even knew the amount of $$$ RU-vid Artists this popular make MONTHLY just from their regular videos you would faint. I have a best friend who is a popular RU-vid artist & trust me, I know the THOUSANDS of $$$ these popular RU-vid artists make.... but some apparently want even MORE MORE MORE... when Olga was doing SAM she was the BEST absolutely sweetheart making money & griwing her channel like crazy, maybe not as fast, but definitely one of the highest subbed channels out there. Part of the agreement when you sign up for Olga's course is that you can't share the recipe outside the course. This is not an uncommon practice. It costs a small fortune to develop a recipe. Example: For a long time, the bloom recipe was ONLY available to people who took the course, and could not be shared on social media. If I want results like Olga's, I'm using her recipe.

While the “secrete recipe” is touted as the the key take-away from her course, you will also learn the science of paint and why the “recipe” works. Yes, it is expensive and if you are on a budget and/or just starting out, stay with Floetrol or other less expensive mediums. I wish Rebekah would have also pointed out the difference in the finish using Olga’s recipe. This is a huge difference if you want an “archival” or long lasting work of art as well as colors that have a brighter finish coat than with Floetrol. I think her course is excellent and she has clearly invested a lot of time and money experimenting and deserves to be compensated for doing the type of research few of us want to do. It’s like the difference in using craft paint versus professional grade paints. There really is a difference and the choice is always yours to make. Whatever you choose, don’t fall into the trap of viewing making art as a competitive sport. That will just suck all the joy out of your creativity.
