- Floetrol vs. Water 😊 An Acrylic Pour Experiment. Let's see what happens! Here I am trying to make two identical paintings, the only catch is that I used different fluid paint mixing recipes. One is mixed with Acrylic paint and water, the other with Acrylic Paint, water and 1/4 Floetrol. See what happens for yourself! Oh and how you see the paintings at the end, they dried exactly the same how I left them 😊.
See my other experiment here, $2 paint vs. $10 paint:

Floetrol is about 80% water. It also has some acrylic polymer (which is why it will form a film) and some flow agents which are really what makes it create cells a bit better than water alone. The cells form from differences in paint pigment density which is why you get them when you put the white over the colors since the white pigment basically weighs more than the less dense colored pigments. The flow agents (including silicone) help the lighter pigments flow to the surface while the heavier pigments tend to head towards the bottom. Floetrol and silicone are not necessary because the instability of the different densities is the ultimate cause of cells... not the flow agents. But they do help and accelerate the cell formation. So I use Floetrol in my fluid acrylics if I want cells. Note that if you have heavy pigments UNDER the lighter ones, neither Floetrol or silicone will generate cells. The heavy pigments are already where they want to go. Anyhoo love your paintings and technique. And of course your lovely smile!

From my research, the Floetrol has a better chance of lasting long term. If you mix in too much water, you have a better chance of getting cracking and peeling over the long term (unless you seal it with a top coat). Something to keep in mind... never mix more than 30% water with your paint! Both of them are lovely, but I agree: I like the one with Floetrol more. Great job! 😁👍

I usually take both Floetrol and a bit of water. Using only floetrol makes paint a bit heavy and thick (in my opinion). But I also use your method (only whater and paint), all versions give beautiful results. And forgot to say: Rinske, I am your big fan, thank you a lot for the inspiration you give! :)

I recently ( few days ago) started practicing this art form. I have to say it's kind of pricy, but if you do your research enough I found out that 1000ml of paint is around 15 20 dollars so If I buy only the base colors like black , white , yellow and red and blue with 50 ml of gold, I can mix my colors and since we need water in it it makes it last longer . I also recently learned ( but gonna test it in a few days) that you can practice this on photo or aquarelle paper as well wich is much cheaper than a canvas .:) Im addicted to this way of painting I spent 9 hours last night practicing and altough I never got to the part where I get these eautiful shades Im sure Im gonna get it right one of these days. Thank you for teaching me so much, your an amazing teacher

I thought the same when i first started out about buying just the base colours and making my own, turns out you can't really do that with pour paintings. There are heaps of beautiful colours that cannot be made up. Also you need good quality paints to get the best results.

I'm new to pour painting so I apologize in advance if my questions seem dumb, but here goes: 1). Do you always need to put pour white paint over the surface of the canvas before adding any colors? 2). Did the paint with Floetrol also have water added? 3). Why didn't she add Floetrol to the white paint? 4). I've seen people use equal parts Floetrol & Elmer's "Glue-All" to make a "pouring medium" but I didn't notice or hear her say anything about glue, so is glue not necessary? If not, does anyone know the purpose of using vs not using glue? 5). Are there different types of Floetrol or is Floetrol just Floetrol? What does the torch do? 6) What is the best "budget" paint to use? 7). Did she use silicone oil? Thank you again, in advance, for your time answering my questions. As au mentioned, I have just started learning about pour painting any other advice you can pass along would be greatly appreciated. 😊

Adding water to acrylic paint thins out the molecular bonding of the paint and causes them to bleed into each other more, whereas Floetrol does not. That is why you get more pronouced cells with Floetrol. To prevent all the little air bubbles, maybe leave the paint to stand for while after mixing. Luv the video though. Thanks

Both are lovely paintings but if I can get out of using Floetrol as well as silicone and have a 'natural' painting then I prefer just water and acrylic paint. It's good to know that Floetrol doesn't detract from dutch pour, just in case you use left over paints with Floetrol in them, but it's just so expensive in Australia that I resent paying $56 for it when I know people overseas pay $15 for the same quantity. Thank you for being open to experimenting, Rinske.

I have to say I like the one with just water the best. I'm not too keen on all the cells.

Great experiment. I liked the floetrol one. They were both beautiful. I agree with Katiewelborn about the elasticity. I thought I was just imagining it. I’m going to try with just water I my wind up preferring it. Thanks for sharing

Absolutely Beautiful.... I love your experiments , this is a great learning tool🤗😍 One little favor to ask, put in front W for water and an F For Floetrol as the camera moves around back and fourth. I can’t Remember which product from left to right. I’m definitely a subscriber now. Thank you for all the great tips.

I always use floetrol and water to help get it to the consitency i want without using too much of either one. Thank you for the videos. I've never done a dutch pour before but I'll have to try it! Yours always come out so beautiful ❤

I'm sad... Just ran out of Floetrol 😟😩😖 Guess I'm going back to the store tomorrow... Both turned out beautifully... But the one with the Floetrol definitely wins in the comparison... Maybe a part 2 ???😎

Maybe try the mixture of Elmer's Glue-All and water in place of Floetrol. (Gilly Kube I think was using this before the Mont Martre PVA plus water combo that she seems to mostly use now.)
