I remember Swink underpass 6 to 8 feet deep in the '70's. Bad flood in Rocky Ford and North La Junta in '65. Back in late '50's Rocky Ford last one of their firemen (Ratliff) while trying to get people out of cars by Mary's Fruit stand on Hwy 50 west of Swink. North La Junta used to flood all the time. This is not new. It just has been a dry 10 - 15 years. Who all remembers Holbrook Lake flooding (overfilled) for about 10 years straight.
From the first proposal of the location of this park I constantly mentioned that it was eventually going to get flooded out not to mention their bike path proposal as well, the South gets huge storms every summer and this thing will flood and flood and flood, unless the Arroyo is dug out in constructed in a way further south deepening it and making a larger area for water to collect to control the flow downstream... but that is super expensive, and there is no budget for that, so it'll keep happening, unfortunately... 🤔
why is the park by the river? I worry about children there. What a waste of money. Maybe some road work and missing stop signs. No trees there either. Hot in the summer with no shade
