Man. Last year I had this happen. Me and my buddy were at the local creek where we find lots of flour gold. I was test panning around. Found 14 colors in the one pan.. dug 3 buckets. And absolutely nothing 😂.... I was shocked. However all around the 14 color pan I did really well hitting a few pockets. However I did find later on that there is a clay layer like a shelf of shorts. The 14 color pan was at the end of that shelf. The end of the shelf was right next to fast moving water. At the edge the flow was slow and low. Makes sense why it was there. And then not there lol

Young man, your missing a piece or two of the puzzle. If there is workable gold in a gravel bar, you must find the pay streak (if there is one). That pay streak is usually no more than 18 inches wide and runs linerally down the bar. Any pan with 10 colors or less is back ground noise (just overburden). You can't make gold in overburden!! The pay streak will have 50 to 200 colors!!! You must sample across the bar until you hit the pay streak, then define it. How wide and long is it. There and only there is where you production pan!!! The rest of the bar is useless! You must use a pan, because a pan will catch 100% (unless you throw it out). A modern sluice will only catch 15% at most in flour gold and it doesn't matter which one or which mat!! So you would have to run 6 times more material through a sluice because they are so lossy on flour gold. Stick with your pan!! If you are allowed a metal detector, find you an old analog Tessoro Ed Dorado, Whites 5900 or 6000, Garrett Master Hunter 7, or original Gold bug. Anything newer is totally useless!! They are digital and of no use to a prospector. Those mentioned can be set to find black sand deposits and can peg heavier black sand deposits from the background black sand on the bar (once you learn how to use it). Finding the thicker black sand is almost always in the pay streak!!! And you can define the pay streak very quickly!!! Working random background noise nets you tenths of a gram per day (what most people do). Working the pay streak will net you grams per day!!!! Last one I did took two days but gave me 9.3 grams!! Good Luck!!

This literally just happened to me. I found a gravel bar and did a test pan behind a semi big rock and found a lot of nice flakes, as I kept going down, the number reduced to 1 or 2 flakes but tended to be bigger, until I found nothing. So I think I found a pay streak that now I will be able to just work on the later that's carrying gold.
@prospectingforadventure
@prospectingforadventure 4 месяца назад
Yeah, it's definitely worth checking. If the paystreak is on the surface, you can try this too. It'll help narrow down where to test pan. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-PKxwcCQ28NQ.htmlsi=96nSRRQcpOHitZzK

Very good to know. Me and my dad have just started prospecting. Only been out maybe 5 times and haven't got much at all. Did my best on the Umpqua by Mertle creek. Few "fly poops" and 1 little picker I got out of a ball of roots of the river grass that was growing on some bedrock
@prospectingforadventure
@prospectingforadventure Год назад
We all start somewhere. It took me a while before I found my first picker! I learned everything from trial and error though. I don't think RU-vid was even an option for prospecting then. I'd recommend joining some local clubs or find an experienced person to go out with. It'll drastically reduce the learning curve. It'll give you more access to fold bearing streams too.

just a question please what size square holes are in the strainer, 1/2 or 7/16? is that perfect for the kind of debris you are going through rock, sand etc? is it a 14" round one as well? thanks
@prospectingforadventure
@prospectingforadventure 5 месяцев назад
It's 1/2 inch, not sure on diameter It's just a standard size to fit in a full size gold pan or on the rim of a 5 gallon bucket. I started using that size because it speeds up classifying. Before that I was using 1/8 and it was more work. 1/2 inch is about the largest gravel I would feed a sluice with.

@OlderThanDirt-ii3rp
@OlderThanDirt-ii3rp 3 месяца назад
Young man. A pan will always catch more gold than a sluice!!! The pan will keep 100% unless you throw it out ;) A real good sluice will loose 80%, always. "Run more material, get more gold"...not if you use a sluice!!! In fact, you have to run 8 times as much threw a sluice to get the same amount!!! You see the original sluices the old timers used had a 2 foot long sheet copper slick plate coated in Mercury!!! Those caught it all down to 300 mesh. Without the slick plate and the mercury, modern sluices toss 80%, period! Stay with your pan, you'll get a lot more gold. Here is a hint, pan down just to black sand and stop!! That is far faster and allows you to get more concentrates. That gold ain't going anywhere so take that black sand concentrate home and do it there.
@prospectingforadventure

I agree, the first couple videos I made are speed panning down to the black sand and tossing it into a bucket. I take the bucket home and process the cons. 👍 ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-SKdqU0Xkm00.htmlsi=BZyWmj3r05cfQSqD

Real question: is there any logic to the color of the gold pan? Some are green, some are black, is there an appropriate time to use one or the other?
@prospectingforadventure
@prospectingforadventure Год назад
There's no scientific reason that I'm aware of behind the colors. It boils down to personal preference. I've found that black gives gold the most contrast, especially the really small stuff. So I use that for cleaning up cons. Green is the most common and gives pretty good contrast followed by blue.
@arte9855
@arte9855 Год назад
The difference in gold pan color is personal preference. Some people see gold better in a certain color pan. See what you prefer and what's easier for you to see the shiny...then filler up.
