Look at Pete Postlethwaite's facial mannerisms between 3:45 -3:58, he is FEELING the music. Pride, happiness, trust; high emotion to the very point of tears. THATS acting

Pete Poslethwaite clearly had some musical skill. Even though he was a mainstream actor, his conducting of 'Grimley' was very convincing. What a man!

I love the contrast between the upbeat melody and the sombre mood of the scene. It just enhances an eerie sense of foreboding and is darkly ironic. Also Pete Posthelwaite's acting at the end of the scene is phenomenal. You can sense his character's pain but he is striving to go on.

I used to play trombone in a brass band. The section beginning at 1.48 was tricky to play, with double tonguing and use of alternative slide positions. At this tempo I doubt whether I could have managed it!

@ramonnie007 He grew up in a culture with a long, long tradition of ~110bpm marching music. If he lived some 40-50 years later he might've written it at that pace, unlike Blankenburg, Fučík didn't write marches at Stars and Stripes Forever speed. When the tempo is not as intended, a piece is adapted for use, it'd be wrong to assume that is the correct speed, as long as one realizes it's an adaptation. Analogous to the ever-increasing tempos used for Händel's 1st coronation anthem..

Good film and a very well played rendition of The Florentiner March, although most of it is played at too fast a tempo. If played any faster it could be classified as a circus "Screamer". A piece of trivia: Fucik subtitled this march "Grande Marcia Italiana" as it is my understanding he wrote this march to honor the people of Florence.

For a fresh listen, it's all there. I had only ever heard it this way, and I can't see that anything was glossed over or that it lost any of its meaning. I am not entirely unmusical and can see how a fresh take like this might well have won a competition.
