Now people are judged by their merits rather than the color of their skin? Who on earth ever came up with that idea?

In NY State, every state university president, every campus security chief has to be a POC, no matter how unqualified. They recently appointed a college police chief who wasn't even a certified police officer. He quietly resigned after a year.

My reaction as a leftie: if they're gonna use the money saved from this to cut tuition substantially, then I'm all for it. Generally, the biggest barrier for disadvantaged people (that DEI is supposed to help) these days in my experience is money. Generally DEI at universities and companies is mostly checking boxes to make themselves look good, and I won't miss that. However, I would be worried if things like disability accommodations decrease in quality following this. I'd also be worried if this sets a precedent of politicians telling professors and students what they can and cannot teach, study, and research. The reason for public, taxpayer-funded universities to exist is so that society has a source of knowledge that is as independent of the interests of its funders as possible, and doesn't have to rely on biased consultants hired by businesses and institutions. But most important issue for me is: if they don't cut tuition, then their inner workings should be investigated.

Who would you rather do heart surgery on yourself or your family, the top surgeon with experience, merit and ability or a surgeon hired based on diversity, equity and inclusion?

Some places are replacing DEI with "student success and support” programs that seem more open. worth a try. DEI got too charged and emotion-driven.

Good! Admin pay is far too high to begin with and admin pay for dumb narratives is particularly bad. Having a job because you are “diverse” just means you are bad at your job and have to hide behind your race/sexuality to cover your incompetence. Merit should be the only measurement not your race not your sexuality. Be good at your job and make sure you have marketable skills and you will be fine.

Well it is floriduh.

I think the key word is inclusion. We have had EEOA policies since the 1970s, extending policies from LBJ. Nearly 60 years or 3 generations of these policies. I have very mixed feelings about these DEI policies. Are we holding people back to give less qualified/experienced candidates a leg up? Are we giving someone 1st place so they can be the first ____, or is first really going to the person who can do the best job? Are these processes excluding top candidates because it is assumed they had more opportunities? How many white men are getting scholarships solely basef on the criteria that they are a white male? Most colleges would have a problem with this. They have to earn scholarships based on merit (yes I understand that many unqualified white men get Legacy scholarships, which is a problem as well). There is a national decline in men attending college and graduate school. The majority of new college and professional degree holders are women. Are we intentionally excluding white men for the "sake of diversity?" Professional music auditions are now held behind a screen (a blind audition). Interviews are typically given to the top 2 or 3 performers. At no time prior do the adjudicators see a resume, name, age, race, religion, disability status, or sexual identity. If you ask any musician who has held tenure in an orchestra for over 20 years, they will tell you that their ensembles are more diverse than ever before. Now more than ever, music has become accessible to K12 students from all backgrounds. And yes these jobs are awarded based on Merit. The top performer wins purely based on merit.
