Palm Beach Zoo Florida Wetlands
The Florida Wetlands at Palm Beach Zoo displays a portrayal of a Florida Swamp showcasing some of the animals that calls the wetlands home. Here we will trek along the Florida Pioneer Trail which is a recreation of a Cypress Swamp.
Florida Wetlands make up about 20% of all wetlands in the United States. The plants and animals that live in this environment make up an elaborate, yet fragile ecosystem. Many mammals, reptiles birds & fish use Florida Wetlands as breeding and nursery areas for their young.
A bird pond showcases American Flamingo, Wood Duck, Black Swan, Redhead, Hawaiian Nene Goose & Ruddy Duck. This area also teaches us about common characteristics of North American Waterfowl as well as gives us ideas on what we can do to help with Water conservation.
This pond is followed by our first look at a Florida Panther, Mardi a white American Alligator can be found inside a building. Once outside we come across exhibits housing Gopher Tortoise, Bald Eagles, Florida Panthers and Bear Den home to American Black Bears.
Up the path from Bear Den we come across Turkey Vultures, Barred Owls and North American River Otters, Florida Panthers and Cougars. The last exhibits we come across is a small area for Turtles and a Swamp home to American Alligators.
