We made a mistake... I said that I cut my floss at 18 inches, but it is actually 36 inches long (we just fold them in half when stitching)

OMG, yes!!! I currently have my floss in snack size storage bags. I cut down index cards, put the color number and name on that, then index dividers with the numbers for each hundred (100,200,300 and so forth). At the moment they're in a Nike shoe box but I'm running out of room! The file box with the hanging dividers is genius!!!

My system has evolved since thus video but the basic principles are the same. I really like it because I can keep at my stitching spot and pull threads as I am stitching. More cost effective than purchasing skeins for each project. I do use some thread drops for smaller travel projects. So glad the video helped. I am glad I switched out of bobbin system.

I keep my main set of DMC on bobbins, in 3 cases, When I take floss off the bobbin to use, I pull the threads from the top of the skein, put the 2 or 3 threads together and run it over a piece of wet sponge. It takes the inks out and smooths he floss out.No knots and the floss lays nicely

I’m still fairly new to cross stitch. About 6.5 months in. I love bobbinating my floss for my wips. And my whole stash (well actually my moms and mine lol) is all on bobbins and in the deep storage cases. Which I love for wips. Keeps everything so neat and easy to find and use. I just know that me and floss drops would equal a mess of knotted floss and frustration. However I would love love love to have the whole dmc cotton embroidery floss collection and as I see more floss or use more then stock up so I have every floss available to me at any given time. At least as much as possible. And I love the way you store the skeins! It’s definitely something I’d likely try or work towards and keep my bobbins and bobbin cases for my wips! That way I would have space to kit up, and have access and easy storage for the full skeins. And when done a project I could simply hang the bobbin with leftover floss if there’s any, right onto the same ring as holds the new skeins. In case of dye lot changes. Thanks for sharing this. Definitely something that will be filed in my memory for if ever I can afford to grow my stash.

Of all the floss storage videos I have watched your video made the most sense. In each video the women talked about using drops. The problem I saw with it is that they put them in drawers and bags, all mixed together. I thought that that would tangle the strands so when it came to storing my own embroidery floss I chose bobbins. Then I saw your method for storing your floss on drops. Brilliant!!! Your organization method is wonderful and the strands don't seem to get all tangled. Since I don't have much room I will stick to the bobbins for now but thank you for the hanging drops Idea. I will keep that in mind for the future.

Thank you for this! I am new to cross stitch and had just watched another video recently (admittedly not the whole thing) where someone was prepping those hanging folders. I could not wrap my head around the practicality of it. Now that I've seen yours, I get it and will go back and FULLY watch how to prep them! Luckily I have an empty hanging file box (a small one that befits my limited "stash") and can try setting it up ASAP. Mine doesn't have a lid but I think I can make a foam core (or quilted!) cover for it to protect the threads. As noted, I primarily quilt and have and use all the Art Bin style boxes you have for my sewing thread. I did buy another one to hold the unopened skeins of an embroidery thread assortment I purchased but was not thrilled with returning thread I used and "bobbinated" to it. I also find the whole "wrapped thread" cumbersome when you want to use it again. So this will be my next step on my cross stitch journey! P.S. Your 2021 video came up in the feed right after this --- I had just the other day also seen something about the Annie's Keepers so glad to see your review of that too!

just a note, if you are getting knots in the floss as you are stitching it has nothing to do with the “kinks”. it means you are using your floss against the grain. Floss and thread has a grain. all you need to do is run your finger down a single thread each way and you will find a smooth side and a ruff side. the smooth side is going with the grain or twist, and the ruffer side is going against the grain or twist. since I makeing sure that I sew with the grain, I don’t have any problems with knots anymore.

I too created my own storage system. In the past I used popsicle sticks but now I use the dmc stitchbows for the thread holder, aka wrapped around, but I store them in a rolodex style tray I created. These trays fit in a nice Michael's box I have. In the case of my haed I have three trays and they all fit in this small box. I wish I could attach a picture to show you. @@edieo7796 I do but they can be expensive. Challenge i have found with annies is multipme projects and if you b pull the floss tab and need it somewhere else cant find it. Is workable with a master set if you stitch from a set... woukd get pricey if having using multiple projects.

@@craft_addictk I think they would be great for storage. I'm not sure about projects though. However, at this point, budget friendly is what I need. I took the DMC for my new project off the bobbins and made the bobbins into thread drops using a pucnch I have for card making. I hung them on some rings I also had. Not pretty but it does the job for now. When I'm finished they'll go on the file folders. I love being able to repurpose things that were destined for the trash.

Me too.. but as you could see I dont have a bug selection. Mostly from projects or may be kitted in projects. I want to see the variations or I dont want to use the floss. Houses are great to see varigation.

I may be duplicating someone else’s but just a suggestion. When hanging your DMC, hang with the number tag near the top and the brand name at the bottom. That way if one slips off, it should be the less important one.

That is a great idea. I actually use this system now for my extra floss and I should do another video with my current storage that I use. Very similar but more user friendly to pull from bin.. I will show it soon.. I have been testing to be sure it was "the one" before I put it out there.. :)

Want to make your own Floss drops, that can't rip? A re-purposed plastic milk jug. It will take some work to get there, but they will be indestructible floss drops, and you can attatch an adhesive label to the smooth side. (I once had to help my mom with a Gr. 2/Gr. 3 craft projection of making a full set of human skeleton bones (Halloween craft), cut out of plastic from re-used milk jugs, as a craft idea for a teacher she used to work with.)

That’s an amazing idea! Recently I ordered business cards from vista print and made into floss drops and always repurpose cards. Which has been a lot of fun too. Never thought of the milk carton idea.

Your system on the hanging files is very much like the Anne's Thread Keeper. The cards are plastic that can be marked and placed on a holder that holds 16 different cards. They can be numbered and organized by number. The cards can be removed from the hanging folder and and place on a ring for a project. They are put into a file box (from an office supply store) by make. Each make has it's own box with one for special threads. It works for me.

Oh yes I have actually converted to Annie’s keepers about 2 years ago.. when I made this video I had never heard of them. I do like them though!
@user-cd1dy3pc6x

@craft_addictk6024 If you want to make things easier. Just write the numbers on a small Avery label and wrap scotch tape over it. When you no longer want the number on that tab just peel off the scotch tape. I also have marked on the labels what the thread is - DMC, Anchor or whatever. When I have 2 or more skeins of a color I mark on the label (1) (2). This way I know I have duplicates. Nice hearing from you.

Bravo on your idea! I'll definitely use it for my fancy floss, but I've a ton of the floss cards and I'm too old to make that change. And don't feel embarrassed about the fancy floss. I've never used anything but DMC, but I've bought my first WDWorks for a project that is coming up.

If you want to mak your own thread drops, simply folding cardstock tags in half an then punching them will make them strong enough. I had to pull with all my strength to break through the cardstock.

I just wanted to say great video! I too have switched from bobbins to handmade thread drops back in January! I got the idea of making my own after watching Teresalittlestitchers video Which I really like using! I went one step farther and blew up the thread chart when I made a copy, cut out the symbols use double sided tape as well as the dmc color # ! But the thing that knocked my socks off was when you mentioned shopping at "Rogers" flea market in Ohio! I too am in Ohio but haven't been to the flea market for years! Thanx Tessa~☆~

That's great! We are neighbors. I'm from western pa. I dont usually get to go to Rodgers since it us during the week day and I'm at work. I will need to look at that making my own.. maybe I'm doing something wrong since I keep tearing the ones I made.

Hi, I storage my DMC floss on drawers with little DMC cards. But I discover the Drop technic and I like it, we can easily take thread while we work. But for storage is complicated if I keep thread on Drop. So I must find the good way... It's not so evident

Do you cut a certain length of floss for those and is the floss easy to remove from the thread drop? Also your HAED floss colors are so beautiful!!!
