5 Candle Ceremony - A reading of remembrance
As we light these five candles in honor of you, we light one for our grief, one for our Courage, one for our Memories, one for our Love, and one for our Hope.
We light this first candle in memory of our mothers and fathers, grandparents and great grandparents. We remember also those who were like mother or father to us, loving us by choice rather than chance. This first candle represents our GRIEF. The pain of losing you is intense. It reminds us of the depth of our love for you.
We light this candle in memory of our sisters and brothers, aunts and uncles, relatives near and distant throughout time. This candle represents our COURAGE - to confront our sorrow, to comfort each other, and to change our lives for the good of all.
We light a third candle in memory of our children who have gone before us, and grandchildren, and great grandchildren. W remember those who lived and danced upon the earth. This candle represents our MEMORIES of you - the times we laughed, the times we cried, the times we were angry with each other, the silly things you did, and the caring and joy you gave us.
We light this fourth candled in memory of our wives and husbands, dearest lovers and closest friends, those who opened us to ourselves and to life, even as we opened ourselves to them and, now, to eternity. This candle is the light of LOVE. Day by day we cherish the special place in our hearts that will always be reserved for you. We thank you for the gift your living brought to each of us.
With this final candle we remember also that the time will come when we ourselves will pass through the barrier separating one form of life from another. We know that as we remember today, we will be remembered tomorrow. May this candle be the light of HOPE. May it remind us that the love and memories of you are ours forever. May the glow of this flame be our source of hopefulness. Now and forever, we love you.
