Hello, my friends! I get so many questions about tent stitching on my full coverage pieces that I thought a video would be a useful resource to have on hand. Not only do I demonstrate the Half Cross, Continental Tent, and Basketweave Tent stitches, but I also show four different full coverage HAED projects including the back of most of them. Please enjoy!

Great job on this video I seldom use half stitches/tent stitches on my cross stitch projects, so am going to use what you showed us on three needlepoint projects which were gifted to me recently! One of the things which made your demo great was your use of a large plastic canvas and assorted yarn so that the techniques were easy to watch, understand and follow. For a new FlossTube contributor, I highly complement you on your teaching skills sets. Well done, Suki!

I'm so new at cross stitching, aren't these all half or diagonal stitches? I have a lot to learn. Cannot quite understand why its called tent stitch. Is it one row of stitching from left to right and the other row from right to left? Still watching the rest of your video. Thank you for showing with a yarn. Makes it easier on these old eyes. Appreciate video and will watch again.😊 Erma

This was fantastically done! Very clear both visually and how you explained 👏 👌. I have come to the conclusion that I am a tent stitch rebel 🤣. I do half crosses and pay zero attention to if I'm elongating them or not (ok, that's not 100% true, but mostly true 😆). The way I tent stitch would probably give you anxiety 🙈. Which is maybe why some of my pieces are going back to full cross 🤪🤣

Hi! Thank you for an amazing video! I saw your other video where you showed the Rivendell pattern and I fell in love with it, and I'm really thinking of doing it 2 over 1 tent stitch. I saw that this pattern has a lot of blended threads, so one question is how would you start the thread? Since it can't be loop started, is the only solution to simply run the floss from a few threads away and then stitch over them to secure the floss? Hope to hear any good ideas! Thanks!!

Absolutely loved your video. Thanks so much for the demonstration of the 3 types of tent stitch. I’ve never attempted basketweave stitch because it always seemed so complicated. You made it look so easy. I use a combination of half stitch and continental stitch. Haven’t had any problems with warping so far 😅

I don't experience warping either. There's a lot of factors why! You can totally do basketweave! Give it a try on one of your existing pieces and then you'll have another resource to throw in with your half and continental!

Thanks for this! I appreciate that your experience has also shown continental tent to warp the most. I have definitely found that to be true, but I have heard some sources say continental warps less than half cross. Everything that I’ve read and tried would indicate warping levels exactly how you’ve described: basketweave least to continental most. So far, because of that, I have been exclusively stitching with a half cross. Perhaps it’s because I stitch in-hand, so I have to be more careful about tension and warping. I’m interested in incorporating basketweave into my projects, but I’m curious how to include it in a typical full coverage design. So far, I’m figuring I’ll only be able to use it where there are larger chunks of color. Have you found any success with basketweave where colors are feathering or where there’s a lot of confetti?
@thebrowneyedstitcher
@thebrowneyedstitcher 2 года назад
I stitch in hand too! Except for my supersize. Tension plays so big of a role, doesn't it! I will use basketweave anytime possible. All I need are two diagonal stitches! It provides the benefits no matter how few stitches in one color may be in an area. It wouldn't hurt to give it a try to see how you might include it in your stitching! Seeing how basketweave works in application is the hardest to visualize because of all the color changes our beautiful charts ask for!

Thank you for this very informative video. I have never done tent stitch before and want to try it on a full coverage piece I have designed. I have only every done 2 over 2 on 28 count. I would like to try tent stitch on congress cloth? but I stitch top left of a pattern and go from there. I have never parked and was wondering with continental stitch, how easy is it to do confetti stitches. I always start off and finish each section I am working on and was also wondering is this going to work with tent stitch or would I be better in trying 1 over 1 on 28 count rather than a smaller count. Any advice you could give me would be greatly appreciated. Thank you again for your informative video.

Yay!! Thank you so much for this video! 😄 Great demos and explanations! I’d love to see this in a confetti heavy pattern. I don’t know how you keep track of which row you do from bottom to top and which from top to bottom 🤔 Also, do you know why you have to switch between those? I always go from bottom to top - would that still be basket weave even if it’s not in a diagonal? Anyway thanks for this! 🙏💕

Oh, I don't really stitch back and forth like I showed in the demonstration. 😆😆😆 And knowing which direction you're heading doesn't really matter unless you're parking. The back of your stitching will tell you which one you're doing. It wouldn't be basketweave but either continental or half. I've already been thinking of the clearest way I can demonstration working through a pattern so I think that will be happening sometime.

This was EXTREMELY HELPFUL! Thank you for the great explanations! I do have a question though. I’m currently Tent stitching my first HAED and I’ve run into a lot of confetti and Ninja Stitch areas. I’m struggling with how to handle them and how to end the threads with those and not get such a bulky back that I’m having trouble getting my needle through in order to keep going with my pattern. It’s looking like a knotted mess back there and I don’t want it to get lumpy. Please help! Also, I would like to see how you would approach a Max Colors HAED pattern. Thank you!
@thebrowneyedstitcher
@thebrowneyedstitcher 8 месяцев назад
I am not sure that there is a way to avoid a lumpy back when it comes to confetti and ninjas. Actually, that's not true. Probably the best way would be to do a meticulous stitch by stitch and start and end your threads with waste threads. Does that help? I do have a plan to do a video on approaching max colors and confetti and all that! I don't know when but it's on my list.
@thepetrifiedgardener3144
@thepetrifiedgardener3144 8 месяцев назад
Thank you so very much for responding. That does help but I have no idea what the waste method is so I will look that up. Also, I was referring to the stitching on the back becoming so bulky that it causes the front to look lumpy… I am currently working on 28ct and I’m now experimenting on 25 and 20 Ct to see if those same squares where they are actually raised on the front, will do so on those counts. In this process I have discovered that on the 20ct my back stitches are laying flat like the half stitch (first example you did here) but when I switch to the 25 Ct ( I don’t change directions, nothing, I just stitch like I normally do) the back starts to look like corn rows like your continental stitch. No one can tell me what is going on. I use the loop start in both methods. I have a feeling that these rows are way is causing the back to be super thick and the front to get lumpy and tight, even though Im not pulling super hard on the tread at all.
@thebrowneyedstitcher
@thebrowneyedstitcher 8 месяцев назад
Woah, that's weird that the back looks different from the 20ct to 25ct like that. I'm not very bothered by the front looking bumpy 😅 It doesn't look like it's bumpy when I'm further away so I just let it be.

I love tent stitching and you covered all the bases which was great. I do have a question about ending threads when tent stitching. Is there a way that securely ends a thread that does not involve away threads or pin stitches and still ends the thread on the front? I dislike the away threads because they get in my way, and I have a great deal of trouble doing pin stitches on 25 count. If you have any suggestions I would love to hear them. Thanks for taking the time to make this video.

Thanks for the demonstration! I started to loathe tent stitch because, whether I was doing half cross or continental, I've noticed that I'd get lines every two rows. I guess this has to do with my tension, maybe? If I alternate between half cross and continental every row, the lines get less noticeable. Maybe basketweave can help me overcome this problem, and I can finally stitch large patterns without the end result being the size of a bus 😅

And 2 - can you do parking with basketweave? Sorry if those are obvious questions, like I said I’m still pretty new to all of this. Thank you!

You can basketweave any time there are two stitches of the same color in a direct diagonal so, yes! I look at basketweave on an individual color basis rather than as a block as a whole. Yes, you can park with basketweave. You would mark a parked thread just as you would with any other stitching and parking method. I hope this helps!

Two possible reasons is the coverage allowed fabric to see and the other is the way the light hits the stitches. This second one is particularly possible for that drawn look if your half stitches were the same direction as the bottom leg of your cross. The look isn't a bad thing at all unless you're unhappy with it. 🤍

Hi Suki - does one tent stitch equal one cross stitch? Or should I do two tent stitches for every one cross stitch I do? I hope that makes sense. I’m thinking of when I shift from two over two to one over one - I do four 1x1 to makeup every 2x2.
@thebrowneyedstitcher
@thebrowneyedstitcher 9 месяцев назад
Are you switching for something like a fancy lady skin or on a full coverage project? It sounds like a fancy lady skin kind of question but let me know if it's not! For fancy lady skin, I do four 1x1 stitches to make up one 2x2 stitch. Depending on your fabric count or if you have blends would probably change if you did tent or full cross in a situation like that.

@@thebrowneyedstitcher thank you. That is So helpful. I've never understood which direction to use on patterns. I wasn't sure what the purpose was for the half crosses when used in conjunction with the full cross. We're the half crosses to give the project a certain effect and that is why they needed to go in a different direction? Why add half crosses when all of the other stitches are full crosses? Do you know, Suki?
@thebrowneyedstitcher
@thebrowneyedstitcher 2 года назад
Using a combination of half cross and full cross gives dimension in a piece while using a limited color palette. It allows background to be further away and less saturated color than the foreground. As far as why those patterns show one way versus another, I don't know the reason if there is one.
@HeidiVieceli
@HeidiVieceli 2 года назад
@@xstitchinglibrarian I believe that when the half cross goes in the opposite direction of the top leg of your full cross it gives a very different texture to the piece than if it goes the same direction as the top leg, so the light hits it differently and makes areas stand out more, which can be important when trying to get detail in smaller pieces. I know a lot of Ukrainian and Russian designers take advantage of these effects when charting patterns.

Needlework as a whole has a wide variety of techniques and terminology to go along with it! Terminology is allowed to change. Petit Point is still terminology used today but in the current culture of cross stitch, that just isn't how we refer to things and I think that is okay.
