Hello all,
Following my first stitch-with-me video I received so many comments on Tent Stitch vs Full Cross and questions on the fabric counts.
So here is a side by side comparison to see if I can help to show the differences and sizes.

WOW!!!! No matter what type of stitching you do Teresa, it is BEAUTIFUL!!! I really enjoyed seeing all the differences of fabrics, patterns, and stitches in this video! Thank you for pointing these out so clearly and up close, as well! It looks like, since every pattern is different, and the many different types of fabric to be able to stitch them on, the best way to base a decision upon what type of stitching to do is based on all those factors together. I'm still new to Flosstube, about 2 months at the most now, and I've learned SO much! I never even realized before there is stitching 1 over 1. I have learned so much, especially from YOU! Thank YOU for taking the time to make these videos! These DO make a huge difference! I've been stitching since I was a child, but I had no clue how much more there is to cross stitch since I stumbled upon Flosstube and the wonderful people like you, Teresa, taking the time to teach us many different things about this craft! If I had not stumbled upon this, I still would never know now! The unfortunate thing is there are not many brick-and-mortar stores that sell specialty items such as these, or if there are any, they are often a several-hour drive away which sometimes is almost impossible to be able to get to, let alone the ability to be able to take classes from. Thank goodness for RU-vid and people like you, Teresa!

I am a needlepointer turned Cross Stitcher so the tent (Continental or half Stitch) feels comfortable for me. I love full coverage and detail. I love them all, but I think if I ever do a HAED I’m going to do 25 count 2 over 1 tent. Thank you soooo much for showing us!!!!

I wish I had seen this much sooner. I always thought even weave was very different than aida but apparently it is not. I am kind of new to stitching again although I taught myself to cross stitch way back in 1980. I didn't know so many NEW things have been brought up until I discovered flosstube last year. Thanks for all you do to inform us!

OMG I love the look on the 25 and 28 ct. My pattern is is calling for 14 ct and I was thinking of working it on a 18 ct. But after seeing the differences I think I'll try the 28 ct. Thank you for sharing I'll order my fabric next week. This was very helpful for me as this will be my first full coverage piece.

Great video, it was useful to see all the different counts and threads. Late last year I worked on evenweave for the first time and I freaked out, starting one project four times. I tried again this year but in hand and I love it. Strange old world. Thanks for spending your time on this video. Have a great weekend. Washing should dry quicker with our weather at the mo. 😊 lol

Teresa, thank you so much for this video. It was wonderful to see the comparison between the thread count fabric, the full cross and the tent stitching. I am jazzed now to begin my first HAED on 25 ct. I am a relatively new stitcher and vowed I would NEVER do counted cross. Well Flosstube has really bitten me hard. I really enjoy all your videos Teresa and thank you again for all your help. Hugs from across the pond, Louis.

This was very helpful Teresa. Thank you. I am attempting my first HAED, it’s a mini called Gods Loving Touch. Using 25 count I initially used two over one, very puffy but great coverage, bit harder to needle after awhile. I ripped all that out and restarted one over one on 25 and it seems like very scant coverage and I am being mindful to not stitch with too high tension. I’m now trying to debate after almost 2000 stitches to start over yet again on 28 ct one over one which I know I live that coverage. The struggle is real my stitching friend, but I’m so thankful for your wonderful videos!!

Teresa, thanks for sharing your comparisons. Beautiful stitching! I have done some needlepoint and wondering if you have tried doing your half stitch like needlepoint where the stitches form a basket weave pattern on the back. The stitches lay differently with the basket weave stitch and I don't see many cross stitchers do this with full coverage pieces. Let us know if you give it a try and would love to see a comparison with this as well. Thanks again!

Thanks for such a detailed comparison. The thing with tent stitch is the finished product will be biased because all stitches go the same way. A full cross evens the material to avoid that. Maybe lacing or pinning can correct that for framing. Robin

Can you please show how you would carry your threads when you are parking and working on a diagonal? Thank you! I LOVE your videos! I have been watching your videos since you started doing them and have learned SO much from you!!
@TeresaLittleStitcher
@TeresaLittleStitcher 3 года назад
Hello there Melissa and thank you for your lovely comment. So really is no secret on the parking. So you say when I am working on a diagonal. I don't do the actual diagonal stitching like the needle bugg or Blitz stitch. Mine is still very simply 10 x 10 blocks - just instead of full columns or rows I stitch staggered blocks in 10 x 10. So I will still park all threads directly under the block i'm working in or if there is not a need for that colour there, sometimes if I know I don't already have a parked thread for the block next to the block I am working on I will park there so not needing to end the thread and start a new thread in the block when I get there. Does that make sense?
@melissajames1995
@melissajames1995 3 года назад
@@TeresaLittleStitcher so, basically, you would carry and park the threads in a similar fashion as you would normally for a 10 x 10 square. But you wouldn’t work them in rows or columns. You would pick up the carried threads in the block diagonal from the one finished instead of next to or below. There really isn’t a good way of explaining it without it becoming confusing, is there? Haha

I love all your videos, you have a great way of sharing information which is to the point and concise. I do have a question about tent stitching. How do you keep your project from warping when doing tent stitching on heavy confetti charts like HAEDs? I can't see being able to use the continental stitch which would prevent it because you're just not going to get a lot of the same color side by side if at all. Do you have a video to demonstrate how to do it? Thanks in advance.
@TeresaLittleStitcher
@TeresaLittleStitcher 4 года назад
Hi there thank you for your comment. I find with so many colour changes and parking of threads in the block below factored with the staggering of my blocks I don't get warping on the full coverage on my projects using the tent stitch method. Also my tension is not super tight - so maybe that is another reason.

I am starting a new project with 32 count and will be doing 2 over 1 tent stitch, except in the corners of the project. Those i am going to do with 1 as the bottom leg and then 2 on the top leg to match the rest of the stitching. i think this makes the corners look a little more finished and kinda hides the tent stitch going through the project.

The difference between tent stitch and cross stitch is the shape of your pixel. Assuming you're achieving full coverage, a cross stitch is a square pixel on a square-set grid, and a tent stitch is a 2x1 rectangle tilted 45 degrees in a stretcher brick grid. Considering that there appear to be hundreds of apps for turning photos and other artwork into cross stitch patterns and none whatsoever for tent stitch, the distortion in the image comes from the incorrect pixelation.
@kimedge7493
@kimedge7493 5 месяцев назад
Why would you need a special app to turn a photo into a tent stitch? I just use a cross stitch pattern and only sew it with the one leg of the cross stitch, which is the tent stitch.

I recently became subscriber to your channel and have seen all your recent videos and have gone back to the first ones. As I saw the one in which you asked for your viewers opinion to help you decide which HAED on full cross and which on tent considering your bad experience with the owl, I would like your opinion on how to to stitch a HAED, Crane by Meredith Dillman because of the design with a lot of white and black. I don’t know what to do: tent 2-1 or full cross 1-1 on 25 ct. You pay much attention to detail, so your opinion would be very valuable to me. Thank you Teresa 😊.

@TeresaLittleStitcher 4 года назад
Hi Patricia, Thank you for your lovely comment - I lovely design you're planning to stitch! So it really depends on your own preference. That said your design does not have intricate detail of lots of small little things so I think you should be fine with 2-1 tent stitch. But really is your own preference - good luck :)

It's a great video but i do have one last question. I've been working on Queen of Freedom it seems like forever with all of ripping I've done, it just never looked right. I'm working it on 18 ct but theonly way it looks decent is 1 over 1. Do you think that's going to look ok or do i needto take it out again and do the 2 over 1. I think a lot of it had to do with using white floss. Opinion.
@TeresaLittleStitcher
@TeresaLittleStitcher 5 лет назад
Hey Lisa! I’m sorry to hear you are having such a hard time with your queen of freedom. Like I said in the video it really is personal preference of how you like it to look. Some people like a delicate look whilst others like the coverage to be puffy and full. I personally would not do less that 2 over 1 on 18cnt as I like a good coverage and would not like to see too much of the fabric behind. Have you thought of using 25 count 1 over 1. That way it is not too full but great coverage even with white - which ever you choose you need to enjoy stitching it x

Hi Teresa! Thank you so much for this video, I´m new to stiching and I really want to do a very great full coverage work and I´m so unsure what to buy. I wanted to do full crosses with only one thread (to spare money) on 25 ct. fabric, thought evenweave, but I thought it should be 2 over 2 in the pattern, now I saw that big world map that I want to do in another video just with tent stiches, but 2 strands (to spare time)... lol, I´m now a bit overtaxed ... why didn´t you stich 2 over two with the evenweave? Stiching with two strands it seems to be so uneven (I´m just doing my first piece, aida 14 ct. two over one), maybe that´s because I´m stiching in hand?!? Happy knitting, I need more of your videos!
@TeresaLittleStitcher
@TeresaLittleStitcher 2 года назад
Hey Regine, thank you for your lovely message. congrats on starting your first full coverage. Well as I always say coverage and 1 strand verses 2 strands is all very personal preference. Hence why I always say test stitch yourself 10 x 10 blocks in the difference strands and full cross v tent stitch and see which one you like most and looks best for your way of stitching. what works for one doesn't work for others - like you say in hand stitching vs frame stitching and tension of thread plays a big part too.

I think everyone stitches with slightly different tension and what works for you might not work for me. I found 2 over 1 too tight for me. I am loving one thread on higher counts now. I have moved some of my full coverage to tent stitch and also a couple of my 25 are 1 over 1 full cross. the way I stitch all my pieces can be found in this document. docs.google.com/document/d/12fhIR4FI8fRpwyD9PmRXZHn3GkXQwRlGeqcbuqPUFoY/edit?usp=sharing thanks for watching and happy stitching!

I enjoy stitching tent stitches on 28 count linen, two strands over one. It's certainly twice as fast. I think I do get more warping of the piece and I find I have to damp block the pieces with tacks a few times to get them straightened out. I'm not doing full coverage designs and if I'm stitching a house or a rail fence, any kind of thing which should be obvious straight lines, I get a warping that I don't remember experiencing with pieces I cross stitched. Is this your experience?
@TeresaLittleStitcher
@TeresaLittleStitcher 4 месяца назад
I think this can be a tension and way of stitching. As I do alot of parking on my pieces and will park below or to the right I have not found this the case for me as yet - but I have not fully completed a full coverage in tent stitch - so I guess I will find out at the end. Watch this space lol

Hey Elaine, Thank you for checking out my video. If i'm working 2 over 1 tent then yes I will use a loop start method. I will see what I can do on a tutorial for you :)

Dear Teresa, I was wondering how you start and end your tent stitch. Kind regards, Guylaine

Hi there! Well there is no rocket science - I literally complete the first half of a normal cross stitch and move to the next square - if that makes sense?

@@TeresaLittleStitcher Hi! That makes sence. And you start with a loopstitch?

what size needle do I need for a 28 ct or a 25 ct?
@TeresaLittleStitcher
@TeresaLittleStitcher Год назад
Needle size good question - I personally just stitch with what i feel makes my stitches look best on the fabric count but the guide suggests as follows:- • 22 cnt = size 22 • 25 cnt = size 22 • 27 cnt = size 22 • 28 cnt = size 24 • 32 cnt = size 26

mine is 14ct, so how many strings should i use to stitch?
@TeresaLittleStitcher
@TeresaLittleStitcher 4 года назад
all very personal preference. The best advice I can offer you is to test stitch on a scrap of fabric a 10 x 10 block. Try 3 strands and work your way up until your happy with the coverage and that your stitching looks nice and neat :)

How does the Andromeda chart show up when you are doing Cross stitch and tent stitch 1 by 1?
@TeresaLittleStitcher
@TeresaLittleStitcher 4 года назад
Hi I am not sure I understand your question - Andromeda is stitched mostly 2 x 2. I only changed the skin to 1 over 1.
@ringingice
@ringingice 4 года назад
@@TeresaLittleStitcher So the chart presents all stitches as 2x2 all along, it never mention 1x1? My question here is - if you change to 1x1, doesn't the count go wrong as you need the make the same stitch 4 times = to the same covered area as 2x2?
@TeresaLittleStitcher
@TeresaLittleStitcher 4 года назад
Ok right I see what you mean. So when stitching 1over 1 we do exactly what you just said so we stitch 4 little crosses to cover the area instead of one stitch. It makes for a lot more stitches but you get a more delicate look for the skin.
@ringingice
@ringingice 4 года назад
@@TeresaLittleStitcher thanks, that make sense now. It also means that you need to choose a higher count fabric to allow you to do 1 over 1, otherwise it will look odd like 1/4 stitch for 4 times on a 16 count.

@@ringingice I can't say for the Andromeda pattern but I've seen charts that have the skin as a separate pattern to the bulk of the project. The main chart showcases 2x2 and the skin detail chart will showcase the 1x1. I started a Teresa Wnetzler pattern called Stroke of Midnight that utilized that method. Though I could be wrong on the stitches used. Kinda abandoned it for the HEADs.

Why would you want a 28 count stitch to be the same size as a 14 count ? Is there a reason ?⚾️

if your doing a partial cross stitch the background fabric which is left showing has a greater appeal visually for some people

Hi Lisa, half stitch and tent stitch are also used a lot in full coverage stitching and some of the other cross stitch designs now too :)

I am still hopelessly confused by all of this. I don't understand the whole "2 over 2", "1 over 1", "2 over 1". etc... and why there are so many names for basically the same thing? "Tent" stitch is still cross stitch, just on smaller fabric (like 22 ct versus 14 ct)? Right? And why is half stitch not just called Needlepoint since needlepoint is basically just half a cross stitch? I'm just so confused, lol!!! Cross stitch and tent stitch look exactly the same to me, just the tent stitch is much smaller. And I **really** don't understand the "2 over 2" and "2 over 1" stuff... is that the number of strands, but how can that be when you said one of those pieces was "2 over 1" tent stitch, but then said later that Tent stitch is basically like half stitch... ughhh I'm so confused. So what is "2 over 1"... is that 2 strands over 1 strand (cross stitching)?
@TeresaLittleStitcher
@TeresaLittleStitcher 4 года назад
Hey Amy, Yes the difference can be very confusing, but let me see if I can help you out on this. Half stitch and tent stitch are basically the same thing and are only the first leg of a cross-stitch. So most of the time when you're using a half stitch you will always use 2 or more threads. "Full cross" is your usual cross stitch with the 2 legs you stitch to create the x. Now when people are talking about 2 over 2 and 1 or 1, they are referring to the amount of thread and the coverage you're on the fabric. So 2 over 2 is using 2 threads on your needle and you are going over 2 threads on the fabric stitched on (mostly this will only be on an Evenweave or Linen fabric). When we say 1 over 1, that is 1 thread on the needle and we are stitching over 1 thread on the fabric, so to try and explain it - if you're working on an Evenweave material and you stitch 2 over 2, you will have 1 full cross. Now if we stitched 1 over 1 instead this would mean to cover the same amount of the fabric you would stitch 4 little x's instead of one big x to cover the same amount of fabric - does that make sense?
