Flounder Fishing on a River Mouth

Sea Fishing for Flounder on a River Mouth. Join me as I venture back down to the mouth of the River Ebbw as it's been over a year since I last did a video there. It joins the River Usk mouth to form a confluence and empties out into the Severn Estuary on the Bristol Channel. Flounder are a popular species when it comes to UK Shore Fishing and they can be caught throughout the year, with Winter being best for the bigger ones. I love all Flatfish, including Dabs and Plaice. This is a favourite South Wales Sea Fishing mark of mine at Newport, you never quite know what will turn up.

Thanks mate, appreciated as always. It's a lovely spot there, just a pleasure being out. Nice to see the Flounder at the end, they are always there to save the day ha! Yesh that's it, don't worry about the blanks, it's all part of the game play we play and sooner or later, a few fish will turn up. From mid February, you won't be able to fish that spot at The Transporter Bridge for approximately 18 months as NRW are upgrading the existing flood defence bund. When it's finished, you'll be able to fish it as normal. Cheers for watching! 👍👍

I live in New England, Rhode island specifically. I fish for flounder in the winter and fluke in the summer. Fluke being a larger flatfish than a flounder. Fluke can get up to 12-15 pounds. 80% of the fish I catch I catch with a very slow retrieve. Flounder are an ambush fish. When they aren't swimming looking for bait they are hiding under the sand waiting for bait to swim by them with the tide, they then attack it very aggressively. We have a fluke jig that we use that drags the weight in front of the bait to stir the sand and get the fish's attention then when the bait goes by next, they attack immediately. Also you can spread out the areas you are fishing by fan casting that whole area. I think you might want to entertain trying this sometime. Weight, then hook with a long skinny piece of squid tailing off the the hook. Very productive fishing. Using light fishing tackle helps also. Thanks. Tight lines!
@riversidewithme
@riversidewithme Год назад
Thanks John, I bet the Flounder fishing where you live is quite special. Where I live, numbers have declined dramatically over the years which is sad, used to catch loads when I was a kid. The water there is chocolate brown because of the mud and so the fish are hunting by scent and not by sight. Only a few weeks left now before the bigger ones move off to spawn. Thanks for the tip, I think I'll try that when I venture down into the clearer waters of South West Wales, I think it could work. Cheers 👍👍

Thanks Alan, it was another enjoyable session, bit cold early on but it soon warmed up. The mud can be a bit sloppy in places but generally speaking you don't really need to go near it that often. I think I caught that Flounder about 1.5 hours into the ebb and so the water was quite low, hence why I had to walk down the bank. Had to be a little careful though and took my time, just incase. Cheers mate, have a good weekend! 👍👍

Thank you David, appreciated as always. Yes that's correct. I've spoken with Natural Resources Wales and work commences mid February and will continue for approximately 18 months, no access for fishing during that period. Gareth Gr8 video, really enjoy the videos & venues. Could you give me some areas between Cardiff - Newport that doesn't get busy and you can catch flounder, codling or bass. I enjoy the peace from hustle & bustle and new to the sea fishing scene and area.
@riversidewithme
@riversidewithme 6 месяцев назад
Thank you Nicholas, much appreciated. You can catch those species at most of the venues, although the fishing on the channel can be a little more difficult during February/March and then it picks up again.I tend to avoid the busy marks, I prefer the quieter areas such as St Brides, Goldcliff, Peterstone, all of which feature on my channel. If you're new to Sea fishing, then St Brides at Newport is a good place to start as it's easy fishing off the grass. Park next to the Lighthouse Inn (either in the free council carpark or on the road beyond the double yellow lines) walk up the steps and pick your spot, miles to choose from. Fish on tides between 10.8m and 12.5m. Cheers 👍

Hello Gareth. I used to fish that spot by the pylon and it is not a bad to fish. Did you have to park by the gate and walk or was you able to drive down. There was a combination lock on the gate at one time and then the number was changed so we couldn't drive down so me and my mate ended up not bothering to fish there. I like watching you're videos as you're able to give us info on the parts that you fish. Don't give up mate 👍👍

Thank you Mike, much appreciated. I'll keep going for now and hopefully more videos to come. Well I'm trying to get fit again and so I deliberately parked down by the Lighthouse pub and walked up, took me around 25 minutes. I parked in the new council carpark which is free. The gate next to the West Usk Lighthouse B & B was locked, although I suppose I could have driven up to that point and then walked across to the Ebbw Mouth, I've see other people do that in the past, probably a 6/7 minute walk from there. Last time I fished it that gate was open as the farmer was moving his cattle on. If you're talking about the private road that goes up over the railway track then I couldn't tell you sorry as I've never gone that way. Not sure if that helps you or not. Cheers 👍👍

I will be taking my son fishing on Friday, we are desperate for a cod before the winter ends! We had good success recently at Severn Beach but would like to try a Newport mark on Friday. Would you mind commenting on what mark we stand the best chance? Hoping to rely on your vast experience!
@riversidewithme
@riversidewithme Год назад
Thanks mate, it's good to be back and out fishing again. I wouldn't worry too much about getting a Cod before the end of winter as a lot of my good Cod I've caught during March/April, they would have been part of the 'spring run' that we sometimes get on the channel. So you have time yet. The fishing around Newport at the moment is really quiet, it's a lottery as to where the fish might be, lots of anglers are blanking. As for Friday morning, well it's a tough call given how hard it is currently. I'd probably head for the black pipe area, which is just next to St Brides. I tend to park in the free carpark near the Lighthouse pub, then up the steps and walk to the right, takes 15 mins or so get there. A good mark on its day and always the chance of a nice Cod. It's not a huge tide but decent enough for that spot. Fish off the concrete platform in front of the pump house station. I hope you get a bit of action. Cheers 👍👍

Me and my mate have been trying to catch flatfish for a while now with not a huge amount of luck we predominantly use black lug, squid and fish baits, is there anything we should be looking for in a tide or venue that would help us? Any tips would be fantastic cheers, have a great weekend and tight lines
@riversidewithme
@riversidewithme Год назад
Thank you Finley, appreciated as always. Nice little session at a beautiful spot, very enjoyable. Not that I'm an expert but in my opinion, when it comes to the muddy waters, ragworm does seem to be the best bait for Flounder. The small ragworm, otherwise known as maddies, are also a great bait but these are not always available in shops. But yeah, normal ragworm is fine! If fishing with a two hook rig, the top hook will be ragworm tipped with a small strip of Mackerel or squid and the bottom hook will be straight ragworm. Often they are very close in and no need to cast far. On low water, have a look for any gullies as the Flounder swim up and down these, feeding as they do so. Leaving a very slight bow in the line is a good idea as it keeps the baits close to the bottom. I find that small/medium tides are best, they seem to prefer the shallower water. Hope that helps! Enjoy the weekend! 👍👍
