Dave and Uncle Johnny flow test the disaster ported Subaru head from Stevie Wonder racing vs Stock with suprising results! Take note that this head was orginally shown because we show how to port heads and this thing was a perfect example of how NOT to do it. Everyone wanted to see the flow and here you are!

Before I watch this, I want to thank those responsible for me spitting out my freshly poured IPA after reading the video description. Stevie Wonder for the win!

I'd like to see some more commentary on how this head flows. Looks like all gains on the exhaust side and only a little loss at low lift on the intake side, could a good valve job or back cut help the low lift flow? Also how would the turbulence at 0.350" effect how it runs. Is there a loss in port energy and air velocity that could hurt low rpm power and drivability or will this head perform better than stock but not as good as it could be?
@headgames
@headgames Год назад
we could get it to perform better than stock with a valve job, but the way the port is blended into the seat it could never be a great performer. Simply you can take it out, but you can't put it back in. The throat is just too big. The turbulence is in the port, and it would perform better if it wasn't there. I showed it because I am sure not many people have heard that before, but being so high in the lift I don't think it would a huge difference, just a small one. Hope that makes sense!

Hi Dave, while you don't upload new video, I'm reviewing the old ones. And when I watched this video, a doubt arose in me, the noise that occurs in the intake, that humming noise that you show at minute 3:56, is it when it starts to be turbulent and you lose air flow? Is it due to excessive speed of the air in the port. Thank you. All the best Goyo

I still have the spare Subaru L25 heads if you wanted to check them out or do video. Everything is OK with the car itself. I got them because I thought I was going to have to use them in a head gasket job. Turns out everything is ok. I'm in NJ as well, they said a dealer did work on it, from milling to 3-angle grind with being vacuum tested etc... just putting it out there They say, from listing: "These heads have been reconditioned and were sold threw a Subaru Dealer in Denver CO ,I purchased the inventory of a now out of business repair shop and these were among the parts. I contacted the dealer and they were able to give me a basic description of what gets done to the heads. Cam seals included, installer must set valve lash and put sealant under rocker plate. hot tank cleaned and inspected, pressure tested deck resurfaced new stems, guides, valves, and seals milled to .0015" for straightness 3 angle grind of valves and vacuum tested Here are the s/n's on the heads and other markings on each head for reference only and does not effect compatibility #1 584500 AS 004 7-1B #2 980518 Q1 013 6B I am not the original purchaser so I have no way to warrant the items, sold as-is please be sure to inspect pictures as these are non returnable, I think these are non egr heads but not completely sure "

Question : do you fill up with welding bowls that have irregularities and exceed the ratio between the bowl and valve?
@GroovesAndLands
@GroovesAndLands Год назад
I don't mean to speak for Dave - but I suspect the answer is a resounding "no"... Especially with production-type heads that are generally accessible. If you had a super duper special custom head that was basically irreplaceable, maybe.
@headgames
@headgames Год назад
No, we don't do that. That is a LOT of effort for a minimal gain
@CJ5EVOLUTION
@CJ5EVOLUTION Год назад
@@headgames so one is better of with a oversized bowl to valve ratio because of the flow is not that greatly affected, can the bottom of the valve seat be machined with a special cutter to remove the sharp edge from it and make the transition or path smoother, do you have the tool for this?
@headgames
@headgames Год назад
@@CJ5EVOLUTION we learned from doing valve job R&D if you touch the sharp edge it kills flow. Like 20-30cfm. Almost everything that you gain by changing the angles. And that head is super sensitive to the valve job as well. Like easy to hurt it with the wrong top and bottom angle and no blending.

I can't tell you how many people I have met who think a Huge cam and porting a head as big as they can and a half ass or "lapped" valves wlll make power.... Which it won't. I learned a lot from bret but I will still never be as good as him and you. Great stuff buddy! I wouldlove for you to do a Video on my Vortec 4.3 heads that i ported if you're interested tell me what I did good, what I did bad and what i could improve on.

If you don’t mind me asking we’re did you get the valve fixture from that opens both valves?
@vettepilot427
@vettepilot427 Год назад
It may not be as important with turbo/supercharged applications, but for N/A applications port velocity is every bit as important as volume (CFM). I guarantee that Stevie Wonder killed the port velocity and other flow characteristics that you don't see in the CFM numbers. I've enjoyed your videos, this is very interesting stuff even though my background is domestic performance.

The air goes turbulent? That doesn't make any sense. The air you exhale with every breath is wildly turbulent.

Nowhere near at the same speed. That air going through the intake port is going so fast you can hear it. Your breathing cmon man…
