Flower Pots - is the Slot Car Hobby Doing Enough?

Flower pots, specifically taupe flower pots are a symbol of what can happen when an industry steps up and decides to take the lead. I think the slot car hobby industry could learn a lot from a flower pot. It's time someone started the conversation, so it might as well be me.

You made some great points in your video. We can both enjoy the slot car hobby and save this great planet at the same time.

RS yes...has a jump on the responsible packaging..these points bring are valid. Thanks for jarring this consumers's mind. Wonders if you considered championing a news arrticle for the media like local news or regional..world news, this is very news worthy. thank you Dave...

Interesting thoughts Dave, I think there is more chance of having recyclable plastic in the cars rather than track as we all have black track and the thought of replacing all of it or mis matching doesn't appeal. Great discussion point though thank you 👍👍

So who recycles slot car boxes.... Collectors can't find enough of them... And DO you buy a slot car without having had a decent look at it? Teasing a tad. Slot Race greetings from S Africa

I love you point. I haul plastic pellets for a living to Plastic plants like Berry plastics . I will get a little video together with an better understanding to what might be what is happening. Sometime this week I'll bring some examples.

Hmm....yes lots of nice thought's but black plastic is mainly already made out of reused plastics !!

yes, it's an end of life material, only good for landfill, if we didn't use as much plastic in the first place we wouldn't be trying to make ourselves feel better about using recycled plastic boxes as well as 1st generation clear plastic lids when a carboard box would work just as well

Great food for thought. Had to chuckle at the outset as I've probably painted hundreds of scale miles of Scalextric track primer gray!

Yes Dave. This is a serious point and well made and well done for not descending into irony or fatuousness in any way, shape or form. When I was a kid Scalextric cars used to come in thin cardboard boxes with a cellophane window and this would inevitably 'bio degrade' of its own accord after a few years and so maybe we should blame 'collecting' and 'hoarding' and 'greed' and with the manufacturers simply following changing customer expectations and demand? Of late, I myself have far too many slot cars and so I share some responsibility as a consumer of this product. I may imagine my own 'collection' will event to 'super nova' on some well known auction site - hopefully later this century rather than sooner - but what then and where will all this 'manufacture' be in 100 years from now? 200 years? Certainly Revoslot is leading the way and, if you ask me, I actively enjoy their packaging aesthetic over any other brand. Oh, and as everything now comes 'mail order' then a big part of the consideration is with 'bubble wrap' and 'plastic pellets' used to protect the manufacturer packaging 😌 Otherwise, and if slot car racing is analogous to proscribed drugs (maybe they should only be available on prescription according to medical need?) then we now know which camp you find yourself in. Are you Bill or are you Ben? - lol. Personally, and continuing in this somewhat churlish and preferred 'utter slot' mode, then my 'poison of choice' is over with Scott and more in terms of the latest tins of Kate Moss Diet Coke. I don't suppose Scott will ever manage to purse his lips around one of these babies in the same way Kate herself manages so to do but then again we can't all be good at everything. You could say Kate's packaging is my crush (not really) but this is where the direction of travel against 'hand grenade' Coke tins (seen in action back in the 1970s) has been to the good. Otherwise, an epiphany overcame me early this morning to maybe model a silver Scaleauto Porsche 991(2) white kit in this livery adorning a monochrome silhouette of Kate akin to the 'Sportswear' Mercedes CLK from Revoslot. However, inhaling 'Zero Paints' - even in a well ventilated environment - is an altogether separate ecology and most certainly one which will hasten my own 'collection' appearing to the delectation of the next generation of slot car vultures.

The situational irony of a 3D printed, painted, GretR Thumbsupberg for the track may have to happen though...

@@bomamo9620 - I have just read this. I do think there is a top down effort these days - particularly here in western Europe - to move away from the mass 'throw away' culture which really started to kick in during the 1970s. These days we have wind turbines dotted all over the place and 'mittelstand' businesses are weaving 'carbon offsets' into their economic planning and processes. This certainly 'feels' good but is it just green washing? I don't suppose any of us will be alive long enough to authoritatively answer on this but, meanwhile, we need to maintain faith in the process as the best foot forward. What real alternative do we have? Meanwhile, Dave has a nice new chunk of orange plastic injection moulding to keep his track 'clean' and (although I won't indulge myself) I do quite like this. Shame the cab looks more 'Buck Rogers' than anything on the roads of Europe today but, I suppose, the air starts to get a little thin over in Austria? Ask Travis - he knows :)

Aren't the slot car track and black parts already last use, ie recycled? Isn't that the cheapest plastic the manufacturers can order to make their parts? Doesn't some industry have to use the no longer recyclable end of life materials?
@slotr
@slotr Год назад
If they were made from recycled materials it would say so, it doesn't. You're right that once plastic is black it's end of life, but making brand new black plastic is about as bad as it gets.

We all need to do our job and be aware so thank you for bringing this problem to light.It's not that it's not recyclable. Black plastic can be recycled to make other dark-colored plastic items. Unfortunately, a lot of black plastic is undetectable during automated recycling processes. So while you may put it in your recycling bin, it ends up in a landfill instead.
@slotr

Yes this is why horticulture went with the taupe pot, the industry worked with the industry on the colour detection. So all the hard work is done, every other industry just needs to follow suit without the R&D outlay

Dave nice video but all plastic can be recycled because it gets melted down , do you also know that at least in Australia you have to pay for the recycling logo to be put on your product & also the people that actually make brand new plastic products don't want old plastic products recycled as it effects there business so colour of plastic makes absolutely no difference what so ever
@Bowl_of_roses

Hi Dave. I had many thoughts about this issue. In Germany, there are mainly black and teracotta-color plastic pots for flowers. We have the Green Point, which was introduced in the mid-eighties. It is a recycling-circle and mainly most products have that Sign on their packages. Actually, when it started, you paid one Penny, which would be one half cent now in the Euro Currency, within the price you payed for the products. It was hyped by Politicians and the Industry to give us a good concious about the enviroment. It is a blender though. So since the 80`s we started to collect all that plastic-junk and up until today, we used to ship it overseas to China, the Philipines Afrrica and who knows. The Chinese than upcycled it and gave us that rubbish back in form of clothing for instance. The problem is though, if you wash these clothings, you will wash out tiny little plastic-pieces of the cloths and this will make its way into the Canalisation, into the Rivers and finally into the Oceans. Oceans are full of it, as well as Fish and other Marine Creatures , which pick this up and to complete the circle, you as consumer eat that Fish. There was a survey in the last years, where they collected the shit of humans from nearly éach Country and the Puuh contained all Micro-Plastic! I stopped to eat Fish years ago, whithout knowing that, but I probably got that Plastic inside me, just like everyone else does. Since the Industrial Revolution, which started in the 19th Century we have started to polute the suface of the Earth. Menas we set off stuff, that never has seen the Earth so far. The Pay-Back, we get now and we need to thank the Politicians and the Industry for doing such a grat job. Oh, I forgot to mention the Oil-Industry and the Lobbies behind it. Yes, now the Oil-Companies are invovlved in electric moving Cars, like Shell for instance. Are they washing themselves clean with it? I guess not. And by the way, look around yourself and tell me what do you see? If the enviromet around you is not made of Wood, Stone or Metals, there is Plastic. Nearly everything made from Plastic is made from Oil. But still we waste it for all those purposes, like moving. We couldn`t even go to the Moon, or outer Space, without Products made from Plastic. Yet we pump our Mother empty and produce shit, we don`t really need, made in China, for instance. Something is wrong big time in the State of Denmark, big time, eh! But as long as all those Sheeps harmelessly grassing in the Green, they all are satisfied. Give them mass-informations, which really keeps you off from impotant issues and the Pigs up there can still go on with their Profits. We, you, me as a consumer can do something. But as I see it, the mass doesn`t want to deal with it. Same with Wars and you name it. Once, not so long ago, there where Live Aid Concerts and the Celebrities organized events to be aware and to speak out on it. I don`t see that anymore. Are they numbed by Informations, or are they just fed up, became lazy, of numbed by other Substances, I always ask myself? You brought up a good point here and like I mentioned, now you got a lot of Magnets to upcycle. Have you found good use for them, yet? ;-)
