My Mom has orchids...over 20 of them! She fell ill, (brain aneurysm) when COVID started. I went to stay with my Mom & Dad for 3 months to help them out, drive to all appts, make foods to help her to recover. I took detailed notes on her care of her orchids, like a kid in school before the math exam.....Hahahahahaha! I managed to keep every orchid alive & I added to her collection! Whew! Have an awesome day!!! ✌🏻

I love that you're talking orchids. I picked up my first one as a tiny thing and it has never flowered in 4 years. So I kind of skipped ahead and bought some larger ones and did some research on their care, repotted them and finally my first home grown flower spikes and new root growth is appearing. You've picked some real beauties there. It never occurred to me that some would be highly fragrant, I gotta try get me some of those 😄

Yes, yes, yes....I love orchids too....I filled my small sun room with over 40 different colors and kinds...and...enjoyed my tropical treat area...surrounded by so much beauty....until....I too got mealy bugs.they were a contstant battle. Having so many plants touching each other it was impossible to get rid of the bugs..even when quarantined cleaned weekly...put in plastic bag.....so one at a time they got tossed...so sad.... I have 2 now.... thanks for the video Jeff❤

Such a shame! When the mealies get on them, it's hard to get them off without completely dismantling the roots and everything.

@@TropicalPlantParty so true even then they hide in the cracks of leaves at the base....I tried submerging them in a bucket completely under water...but with so many plants there were too many places to hide... I have 1 plant now that has them, it is Quarenteening alone in the livingroom...its my my African mask plant...It gets soapy sprayed and rinsed...that gets the big ones... wait 15mins. Repeat.....more will climb out of hiding....wait and hour repeat....then the tiny white dots climb up the stems do it again until no more show up....repeat every week at least those.leaves are easy to clean... it's a beautiful old plant. I had a catastrophic orchid event too. Last summer. I always put them on my screened porch for the summer. But one day I was cleaning the porch or something. I put the orchids outside on the deck. They got too much sun and they all died. Most of mine were rescues from the clearance rack so I did not cry too much.

Oh no! They really do fry quickly. Not like a lot of plants that will brown up/bleach out but then flush back out and be ok, nope, orchids just fry and die. I had a similar thing happen with my first orchid collection. A construction crew was refinishing the patio and they moved my orchids(that weren't even on the patio) to my driveway in the full aun. It was July and like 102F outside, they were brown and black by the time I got home.

I love orchids too. I have 20+. Most of what I have are cattleyas and oncidiums (my faves) but I do have a few phals, paphs and some jewel orchids. Nice haul. I do have 3 dendrobiums, but they don't do too well for me. I've had them for a number of years but this is the first year I ever had any blooms on them. All my orchids are under grow lights (not industrial strength lights) as I grow them in my living room and bedroom. (My small house is dark) my cymbidium also bloomed for the first time In 3 years. I bought it in a 4 inch pot. It is currently in a 10 in pot and has completely filled it with growths. Last fall I left it outside until the temps reached +2celcius before bringing it back inside, and it finally bloomed in December. Only gave me 1 spike, but the blooms were worth it.

Hi Jeff! Those are really good looking orchid plants, and really nice sizes. I'm with Judy McKerrow and am hoping you will do a video about how you care for these orchids, and show us how you pot them up. I've only had Phals., but don't have very good luck keeping them alive after they've bloomed, but would like to try other orchids, too, like the Oncidium Sharry Baby that you got. Thank you so much for sharing!

have you tried using the Bonide granules on the Phals for the mealybugs. I know you have the pets and so you have to be careful, but the granules would be in the media where the mouths wouldn't get to them. And then you wouldn't have to bother with a weekly treatment, just once a month treat the pot.

Your pool looks blue again😅. I would watch your orchid videos. My phals all bloom reliably in the spring (2 still have blooms), so this year I got brave and got 2 oncideum, a paphiopedelum, a meconopsis, and a zygoonisia from an orchid sale after the orchid show was over. So excited (and hoping) to see them bloom next year.

I've found the only way I can grow Orchids is to place them behind other plants so I can't see them. It seems the more I ignore their existence the better they grow ;)

How do you pot these up? So often I see every person make their own mix but like what's all in it? Do you keep these in a cabinet indoors for humidity or do they adjust to the household? I avoid a aroids to be honest because it just seems people spend so much time on pest contol and it being a constant battle. Is it just me or is there a lot of pest heartbreak in aroid ownership. Honestly I'd like to see how you display these.

With everything in this video, I just keep them indoors or in my growspace during winter and treat them like I do most houseplants. Filtered but bright sunlight, water about once a week(species depending) and I pot then up in general orchid bark. I may add some noot aroid blend to their orchid bark and sphagnum moss when I do repot these.
