I show how to look after some of the easier flowering plants, many perennials, and the time saved by growing no dig, with a thin mulch of organic matter. This could be wood chip and find some near you if in the USA getchipdrop.com/?ref=charlesd...
We filmed when many plants were in flower! June 12th 2018 at Homeacres in Somerset, SW UK zone 8 climate. Thumbnail is zinnias, an annual.
I write books, sell them and a calendar from my website, with information such as timings and best veg for second plantings in summer, charlesdowding.co.uk/product-...
Follow me on Instagram charles_dowding, Twitter @charlesdowding and Facebook.
More about my growing history charlesdowding.co.uk/charles-...
My website has much information about no dig, for example charlesdowding.co.uk/start-here/
I have two online courses which include hundreds of photos and exclusive video content, for more information go to charlesdowding.co.uk/product-...

@@CharlesDowding1nodig no, no, no, THIS IS main stream. People don’t watches t.v like old times anymore. Whenever one needs answers they go to RU-vid /google. It’s more efficient, to the point and viewers are in charge. So, yes thanks for RU-vid.

Dear Charles, Your garden is beautiful. I will note down some of them to get my first ever garden started. I'm in my 20s and I didn't know how amazing and addicting gardening is. I've picked up a lot of tips from your videos in my first almost a year of gardening. I've lots to put in practise as of now though. I love how suprise flowers pop up. I thought some were weeds but luckily my gardening-crazy family stopped me from pulling out gems. It is so amazing how Allah has created so many different varieties of flowers for us to feel tranquility from. I wish I knew more about it in my teens. I think it would have really helped me get through growing up.

Thank-you so much for pointing out that flowers are important to the veggie garden...as well as the fruit orchard. I am forever trying to convince people that flowers bring pollinators to the veggie and fruit garden. I am currently researching how you can use flowers to lure bad bugs away from your fruits & veggies...a sacrificial planting of sorts. Any suggestions? I think many people don’t realize the practical benefits of flowers in the fruit/veggie garden...I hope you expand to speak on these topics as well. Of course...I love flowers for the pure joy of growing flowers too! As always, I appreciate your videos SO MUCH!! 😊 Thank-you!!
@CharlesDowding1nodig
@CharlesDowding1nodig 5 лет назад
Thanks Trisha. I don't think in terms of sacrificial plantings because that seems unnecessary, the flowers and all plants need to be healthy to support each other, in ways that we mostly do not understand, and science cannot yet measure. Such as the wood wide web of fungal communication between roots. So a no dig garden (undisturbed fungal networks) with varied and beautiful plantings has healthier plants. Beauty and health are linked, based on what I observe, and it works well here. And yes the joy of growing helps too!
@trishabrinkdesign
@trishabrinkdesign 5 лет назад
Charles Dowding As always, your experience and wisdom on this topic speaks volumes. I just seem to hear from a lot of other gardeners that they plant...for example… nasturtiums to attract whatever bad bugs might be lurking looking for squash plants etc. However, I definitely like your theory better!! 😉It seems as though often times we are inundated with fear tactics on gardening. No dig gardening seems almost too good to be true... but judging by your garden the proof is in the pudding.👍 I look forward to putting your theories into practice. Keep up the great work!
@CharlesDowding1nodig

Thanks Trisah and yes, people use that fear factor a lot. They claim to know more! Natural simplicity is best and easiest.

As usual, another great video! Thanks for the beautiful flowers, during this bleak, rainy/snowy winter time! How refreshing! I'm glad to see you got that walnut tree out! We have black walnuts in our area, and the squirrels enjoy planting them in our garden now and then. I try to stay on top of those, as their roots are poisonous to my apple and pear trees. We lost two pear trees before we realized the black walnuts are not compatible to pears. Thanks for sharing! Dane and I appreciate you! Blessings always! --Janet

Charles I've never seen your flower beds- so beautiful! You encouraged me to start my new cutflower no dig! I am almost finished building it. I started doing no dig by accident honestly. I didn't have a tiller one year( mine broke) & didn't have thy money to rent one & it was so great! Having clay soil- it was so much better with the compost on top! So easy to dig in, not nasty & muddy... when I would till the compost a month later everything was compacted back down! I also turned my old veggie bed into a perennial cutflower garden & I'm building raised beds for the veggies closer to the house. I have peonies tulips & daffodils planted so far, I can't wait for my peonies to establish!

As a pensioner here in Pretoria, South Africa, I decided to take up vegetable gardening last year. After watching a myriad of RU-vid clips, I started off with straw bales. That did not work out very well. After watching some more videos, I decided to choose Charles Dowding as my instructor of choice. I have limited space available so I constructed 6 raised beds from pallet planks, and filled it with compost. It is now approaching winter and my beds are ready for summer. We are in the Southern hemisphere so seasons are the opposite from yours. I do have, however, onions, carrots and beets doing quite well already. We have a frost free, sub tropical climate with temperatures never reaching freezing point. In summer it goes up to well in the mid thirties, which presents its own problems. Thanks for your instructional videos, Charles, Your no dig method is my way to go.

Fantastic to see this. I love no dig for vegetables, but am wanting to start a flower garden, especially roses and wanted to see some results. Logically no dig would work just as well for flowers, but most rose garden advice seems to be to dig until you reach the Earth's core.

I'm delighted to have helped you out and I'm sure that your roses will actually be better for not digging because they love the mycorrhizal fungi network, which is damaged by any kind of soil cultivation. People who write that have not tried no dig, so they know only to dig, and these are better ways!!
