What a joy this was to hear Chris Schenkel broadcast a fight again. Chris Schenkel was as good a man as he was a broadcaster. I spoke to him by phone the day of the first bout between Matthew Franklin and John Conteh in Atlantic City. I was a high school kid, and in spite of that he gladly told me of announcing bouts in the '50s from St. Nicholas Arena in New York. ABC had the trifecta of Cosell, Schenkel and Jackson to call boxing, which they did all over the world.

These fights were all about Ingo's "Toonder and Lightening" as he called his right hand and whether Floyd could deal with it. These were great events. Ingo, for the year that he was champ, probably got more ink than any other sports figure. Those were very cool times.

While these two were jockeying the title back and forth with the title, Sonny Liston was the #1 contender for six years, Patterson finally gave in, even though his manager Cus dMato was totally against, but the media was wondering why Sonny hadn't yet been given a title shot. Cus dMato was saying Sonny was affiliated with the mob. SMDH. the era of the small HW would soon be over.

Patterson had TWO supreme accomplishments. He became the youngest ever to win the HW title and then the very 1st to regain the HW title. He was more of a light-heavy in terms of his size and if he chose to box at that weight he may have become the all-time greatest in that division. Patterson at one time had more 1 punch KOs (6) than any other HW in history. Patterson off these accomplishments might have to be considered in the all-time top 20 or so HWs.

I think Floyd's punching power was and has been overlooked by historians. Floyd employed many styles and was a smart fighter indeed, but also, Floyd was a banger from the inside and he paid the price for that in terms of knockdowns, k.o.'s ... Ingo looks like a very awkward opponent and think what he might have done.. had he the desire to train a la Floyd .. Floyd trained his entire life .

This video showed Floyd Patterson to be both an excellent athlete and a gentleman. His quick, coordinated moves throughout the fight showed him to be a fine athlete. His self-effacing and modest demeanor in his brief interview with Howard Cosell, and his going over to his opponent right after the fight to congratulate him for good competition showed him to be a gentleman. I loved Floyd. He was a great fighter. Actually a beefed up middleweight. Really should have been one of the greatest middleweight/cruiserweight champions of all time. In this fight Ingo got a quick count and if Ingo had been in shape he would have regained the title. Also Ingo would have given Liston a much tougher fight than Floyd because styles make fights and Ingo's big punch would have hurt Sonny. Though in the end Sonny would have prevailed, just like in the Cleveland Williams fights.

@tralfazruk1

You lost all credibility claiming Ingo would have given Liston a harder time. Patterson could move and had a peekabo style and a faster better jab than ingo. Ingo had to catch you coming in or if you were off balence falling back to hurt you. Liston had a far harder jab and far more power. Ingo couldn't jab like he did with Liston or it would be lights out. Liston didn't miss much with his hook. You would not have a Liston Williams fight you would have a Foreman Frazier 1 fight with far less knockdowns maybe three before the fight ended. There was a reason Ingo didn't fight Agressive real hitters. Like Joe Frazier ingo had good handlers who knew who not to fight. Frazier had no choice in fighting George thus the slaughter.

I would also like to add that Floyd would have given a better account of himself against Liston if he had stayed away and boxed instead of walking right into him. has Johansson ever heard of a feint, uppercut or bodypunch. All he does is jab , and looks to land a straight right to the chin . If he threw an accassional feint off the jab and a accassional right to the body and or threw a right uppercut when patterson got inside, it would have made a big difference.
