The one that most mixed kids really experience (myself included, I’m Italian-Chinese-Vietnamese) is an identity crisis, because society will at one point or another label us as “not enough like” one of our sides (example for me: Not “Asian enough” and vice versa), so we don’t know where we fit in. However, at the end of the day, I just realized that it doesn’t matter what ppl think of where I belong, but rather that I know who I am and that no matter what I’m just like everyone else. I really admire what you said Scru ab making sure your child knows where he belongs, because he’ll thank you for that one day and it’s smth i wish all mixed kids could have; a sense of themselves. 😁🙏🇮🇹🇨🇳🇻🇳
@Azurethewolf168
@Azurethewolf168 4 месяца назад
How does that work? Do you have 3 parents? Grand parents are from Italy? It just comes down to what YOU identity and see yourself as, and then people will see you as that. Maybe I don’t get it entirely since I’m not from a mixed family.
@oceanmythjormundgandr3891
@oceanmythjormundgandr3891 4 месяца назад
@@Azurethewolf168 Its not that simple to just think "I decide what I am" when SO MANY children, adults, and even family members try and fit you into a box or even exclude you for "not being enough of X". It even happens on accident when people insinuates that you don't understand a certain experience, or don't "count" because you are mixed with something else. No- people do not just take your word for it and see you as "that" because you identify as it. People have even said "lol don't joke- what are you really?" I am half latina and look latina- I wasn't raised latina at all and don't speak Spanish. In the past two decades people have constantly questioned where I am from- not accepted my Norwegian answer, pressured and got me to say Latina- and then get surprised or even mad when I don't speak Spanish. Then they won't accept Swedish as an answer either. Even family and relatives have over the years looked at me with gazes that clearly said "You are not in our group" and at the same time seeing me as family and as a relative. Like, the math behind that is wild for a kid. Two decades of that from birth kinda makes it hard to finally say "I am Swedish and Norwegian, I decide what that means." and get seen as it. Especially when I for years as a kid wasn't allowed a Norwegian passport despite living in norway- all because my parents had non-Norwegian passports. Few saw a non-norwegian-looking kid not allowed to be Norwegian- As Norwegian. Self-identity takes YEARS and its extra difficult when so many say you don't qualify as XYZ and your non-mixed friends and family doesn't get it.
@Azurethewolf168
@Azurethewolf168 4 месяца назад
@@oceanmythjormundgandr3891 I meant like what you look like becomes your identity in some way, so if your Latina like you said and people think of you as that, I guess you are Latina. Technically you are Norwegian but few would see that.

Two thoughts. 1. Some people definitely seem to have the mentality that unless you can trace back to what plantation your great great grandparents were on, you're not Black enough. I'm not part of that community so I can't say much, but it doesn't sit right with me. 2. A lot of people in the US like to imagine South and Southeast Asia doesn't exist. Meanwhile someone from SE Asia would probably come off as mixed to a lot of people.

I understood Trevor when it came to "Wanting to be Black after having been The Mixed One" Sometimes you just want to be called a specific thing. I am unlucky enough to not look like the nationality I identified most with. Being mixed race can be hard when many tries to put you in a rigid box of what they say qualifies as that race or nationality, especially if you don't "pass" as one race. First they pressure about what you are then they get mad when you cant be "placed" or refuse to go along with their labeling. At this point I have just started to not elaborate at all and acting confused when they laugh and say "lol you cant be swedish, good joke". Oh please pray tell me why I cant be random person in the elevator? I hope the future is more open to mixed people and don't try and decide for them what they are.

Yound adults and even kids are killing one another, and for what? I don’t see this in the comments yet, so let me shed some light on this from a non-comedic perspective: “Mixed” people in the U.S. are considered Black because of the racist legacy of the “One drop Rule” (ODR). The ODR referred to the legal category occupied by the children of enslaved Black women who became pregnant as a result of r@pe by white men. It ensured that no matter how diluted an enslaved person’s African blood became via generational sexual violence (lighter skinned Black women would be more likely to work inside their enslaver’s homes and would thereby be more vulnerable to assault- perpetuating a continued dilution of African blood quantum), they would never be able to escape the bonds of legal slavery as long as they had even “one drop” of African blood. After slavery was legally (if not effectively) abolished, the ODR remained in place to make sure that people with even “one drop” of African blood would be barred from the legal privileges exercised by whites. The ODR prevented mixed peoples from owning land, voting, intermarrying, EXISTING in segregated spaces, etc. Today, even though there is no longer any legal basis for the ODR, it remains in effect in a thousand ways that work to exclude Black people from full social citizenship.
