Flugplatz Brandis Waldpolenz: From WWII Luftwaffe Base to Abandoned Soviet Relic
Full Post: digitalcosmona...
Join us as we explore the rich and complex history of Flugplatz Brandis Waldpolenz, located just 20 km east of Leipzig. Originally built during the Nazi rearmament in the mid-1930s, this airbase was home to the "Blindflugschule 1," where Luftwaffe pilots were trained in instrument-only flying techniques. The base also served as a testing site for advanced aircraft, including the experimental Junkers JU 287 and Horten Ho 229.
During WWII, Brandis became the staging ground for the infamous Messerschmitt Me 163, part of the Luftwaffe's attempt to disrupt Allied bombers. The post-war period saw the base fall into Soviet hands, transforming into a key diversion facility during the Cold War.
Today, the remnants of this once-strategic site are crumbling into obscurity. Urban explorers can still find traces of its past, from Soviet-era helicopter hangars to forgotten monuments hidden in the woods. While many of the original structures are slated for demolition, a few key historical buildings remain.
