I finally converted my Fluorescent T8 fixtures to LED. Here are my notes about the options I chose.

I was about ready to build my own connector like you did. Thanks for showing me that there is a commercial option. I'm considering something like this for my basement which has very low headroom--I could easily mount the tubes to the sides of floor joists to keep them above the ceiling plane. For the workshop I already have a bunch of integrated "LED shoplights" from a big box store.

Don't know much about LEDs so I found this video a very informative introduction. Looking forward to the follow-ups! Thanks!

I upgraded my shop (it’s big shop with lots of fixtures) with same brand led single ended bulbs, it’s over year now and didn’t replace it single one yet, it was very easy to do it.

There are double-ended ballast bypass LED tubes. I was hoping to learn why you chose single-ended ones.

Using your connectors it should not be a problem, but I have heard that when retrofitting an existing florescent fixture, some tombstone manufacturers will not warranty single ended bulb applications. Evidently their non-shunted tombstones were not designed to have 120VAC across the two pins of a single tombstone. This could be even worse if someone goes in and cuts the connection in a shunted tombstone.

Yikes. Thinking of somebody simply cutting the connection on a 120V device gives me the heebie jeebies. It seems like the workshop equivalent of a backyard mechanic would do that. Nothing against backyard mechanics.

Your tube links to Amazon are dead links. I am having a hard time finding single ended tubes.

Might be too late to say this but CRI is what you need in a shop. Higher than 90 or as high as you can get, as Timothy Leary used to say.

I’m a HUGE fan of high CRI. Actual high CRI. However, with products in the consumer markets, “high CRI” bulbs are super hit and miss, and often vastly overstated. I do some photography (keithkellyphotography.com) and am quite bugged by bad reproduction of the color spectrum and have bought way too many high CRI bulbs that overproduce reds, lack greens, etc. So! Remember my reference in this video about the mixing reds and blues? 3000 and 5000k? That’s what I’ve found to be a solution that has worked well for me. The hyperikon 4000k bulbs have a good even spectrum that doesn’t seem to overproduce colors. Things aren’t necessarily vibrant, but they are more importantly even. That’s a good base to throw in some 3000k and 5000k fill bulbs to make the whole spectrum pop. Cheaply. If I ever feel like it. Which so far I haven’t in the shop, as the lack of color cast of these 4000k tubes has been oddly pleasing. But if you can find a good single high CRI bulb that doesn’t make you feel all icky, that would indeed be ideal On the commercial front though, there are some seriously cool things going on. Like Bridgelux Class A LEDs that are developed based on behavioral studies for use in high end retail stores and museums. Back to retail though? Consumers look at 1) price, 2) watts, 3) “color temperature”, 4) “lumens”, and “CRI” as stated on the box. As long as we continue to be focused on #1 (as I admittedly am), the consumer market will continue to be filled with air quotes.

For me, as I age, brightness and color temp are what count the most. When I'm done remodeling my garage shop, planes may land here instead of O'Hare. BTW, perfect timing on finding this channel as I redo my garage. I liked your comment about how you hung your lights based on the workstation layout and not the ceiling layout. That makes almost TOO much sense!

• What is a "strange connector" (referenced at 2:48)? • How/where can I get a $20-off Amazon/Hyperikon coupon?
@KeithsTestGarage
@KeithsTestGarage 3 года назад
Strange connector is something I made (and wouldn’t recommend!) Not sure on the coupon. But, check their listings periodically for Amazon warehouse deals on these items. I got a set super cheap that way.

Do me, and other Radio Heads, a favor please. Find a local HAM, and ask them to come over and check those lights for RFI 'Radio Frequency Interference', and report what is found. I bought some 'el-cheapo' ballast free tubes and the RFI was really bad. Have to turn them off to hear distant stations on the shortwave. Not a problem for the makers out there, but a real pain for us listeners..!

I asked somebody who I thought had one and he doesn't. If I run across somebody who does I'll see if they can give it a try.

Sorry Keith, maybe your videos are not for somebody as ignorant as I am about such things (kids, don't play with electricity), but what do you do with the connectors? I saw in the comments that the fuse may not be needed... but are you just directly using a non-grounded plug on the end of the connector that you have the link for? E.g. no sort of adapter is needed?
@KeithsTestGarage
@KeithsTestGarage 3 года назад
correct. I'm not sure what's proper, but I did a non-grounded wire from a 16 gauge extension cord running into the box w/ a sort of screw-tight connector.

Good video. What do you think about the new scuttlebut about led light affecting people's vision health?
@KeithsTestGarage
@KeithsTestGarage 5 лет назад
An all-DC system would be ideal! I guess I'm a guinea pig here. Weren't there concerns about fluorescents affecting people's health? Mixed thoughts... These are rectified @ 120hz, so they don't have that typical 60hz flicker that cheap Christmas light strands have. But they still technically flicker even thought it's unnoticeable unless doing slo-mo video. Adding to the mixed thoughts: I wonder if leaving up a few fluorescent bulbs (or something DC or constant) would decrease the likelihood of health concerns? That way, the flicker wouldn't be going from a brightness of 100 to 0 repeatedly, but say 100 to 30. Interesting topic for sure.

I will never use LEDs as I prefer fluorescent, but I appreciate the fact that you used actual LED tubes rather that installing brand new integrated fixtures.

that 53% look like 99% in the graph. r/assholedesgin other than that great video . I think frosted is better to reduce spot light. but u put alot of them so that remove the effect.

To your credit, I wasn't very clear about my intentions there. I find visual aids often humorously skewed by the presentation based on bias, so I Photoshopped an extreme misrepresentation of the poll on my Community page and kept it a subtle gray. Good catch by the way. People who actually consider the numbers rather than the colors & shapes are a step ahead IMO. (also, that the number of votes was only 17, and the survey was limited to this channel's subscribers.)

Also, good point about the frosted. If you only have a few fixtures, frosted will help if there are white objects around to use for reflection.

There should only be a skippable ad at the beginning. If there are more, something is amiss. I’ll look into it and thanks for the note.
