That's "shunted", not "scented". If you have two colored wires to a tombstone, usually red and blue, it is non shunted. Usually the other end will have all pins connected together with yellow wires.

I didn't know either that there were double and single sided tubes. When it would have come time to order the led tubes I would just taken what they gave me. Good to know now and after all the video's I have watched on converting fluorescents to Led's this was never mentioned. It was suppose to be a quick tip (couple minute video) but really wanted to explain it. I was going to buy a bunch of the LED lights that have the LEDs integrated into the fixture but I am not completely assured those lights will last. I like the idea of replacing tubes if LEDs go out. So far all the Hyperikon lights have been working great. The reason I went back to them. It would have been a bit cheaper go the other way but I am really happy with the results. I will have a old shop update soon.

+Mossman381 I was wondering why this video was 9 minutes long, but it did make sense when you started to pointed out that the socket might be connected on one end.. If I was a betting man.. I would not say they did to sell there proprietary light fixtures,..... but, I honestly don't see what the fuck they where thinking when they made the single ended bulb... I mean the idea is to sell it to all the people that had florescent lights... and florescent lights are always double ended. the have to be to work.. you need electricity has to pass though the gas in the tube... and its really hard to pass a wire back in tube full of gas turning into plasma. the reason I think they did is LED lights can be chained together.. infact in there raw form, (those super cheap 26 foot long strips...) you pass a current one way... till it reaches the end and then turn around the current sending it back the other way... that is what they use to fill your LED tube light. Thinking about it light this.. I bet if you cracked open the tube.. you could just sneak a wire to the other end and turn it into a double ended LED tube as another way of converting these to work with a socket.

I really like your know-how. Good video. One word of caution with it comes to single ended led conversion, is to place a label warning users not to install fluorescent tubes, and maybe include a 1 amp fast blow type fuse as an additional safety precaution. In the plant I worked at 7 or 8 years ago, when we first began to get into LED tubes, a custodian was injured while installing a fluorescent tube in a fixture that had been converted to single end LED. The glass had shattered near the end he was holding, when the tube shorted out on 277 volts. If you weren't aware, 277 volt lighting is very common in larger commercial or industrial facilities that are supplied by a 480Y/277 3 phase 4 wire system. That's why some electronic ballasts and LED drivers will say something like 120 - 277V. Or for magnetic ballasts, mainly metal halide or high pressure sodium, will have different wire leads, for 120v 208v 240v and 277v, which is nothing more than taps on the primary winding.

I just bought a contractors pack of ten LED tubes made by GE and it turns out they are double ended. The schematic that GE provides with these tubes has all four terminals at the one end connected to the hot (black wire) and all four terminals at the opposite end connected to the neutral (white wire). So basically, with the GE tubes I bought, the tombstones at each end are all to be connected in parallel. I don't know what other manufacturers do but this is what GE has for these particular tubes. The tombstones typically are shunted with a jumper wire. Mine are all non-shunted. An easy way to remove the jumper from the tombstone is to push a thin steel wire in next to the jumper and pull the jumper (shunt wire) out.

I have heard that some tombstone manufacturers will not warranty them if they are used with a single-ended bulb. Not designed to safely have 120VAC difference on the two pins and may short. This could be even worse if someone goes in and cuts the shunt wire in a shunted tombstone!

If your light fixture has "non shunted" tombstones then either single sided OR double sided LED bulbs could work and would be your preference.. Do I have this correct?
@mossman381
@mossman381 5 лет назад
No, you have to wire the light fixture for either double ended or single ended. You can put a single ended bulb into a fixture wired for a double ended light and nothing will happen and your light will just not turn on. If you put a double end light into a fixture wired for single ended you can destroy the LED bulb and they won't cover that under warranty. You can NOT mix the two types.

shunted as someone explained above means both terminals are conected, if you plug the hot wire on one end and the neutral in the other end in a shunted tombstone, you are making a short, its gonna be sparks and breaker will trip. That's how electricity works, so you have the LED light acting like a resistant, electrons are flowing from the hot wire to the nutral wire through the LED light.

Could be a plug and play or a hybrid tube. Plug and play tubes work with the ballast in place. Hybrid tubes work as a plug and play tube until the ballast goes bad (or is removed). Once the ballast is eliminated, the fixture will have to be wired accordingly. Note that LED tubes working with a ballast do so less efficiently than LED tubes that are direct wired.

Hello. After watching your video, I pulled a double ended fluorescent bulb out of it’s “tombstones” and tried to fit a single ended LED into those same tombstones, just to check figment and there is no way. The tombstones in that fixture are not a universal fit for either type of end. They only accommodate a double ended bulb. At 3:10 of your video, you said the lady you talked to suggested changing out the double ended tombstones for single ended tombstones. You said you found a way to convert the new fixture you just bought, to the single ended type. In the video, have the single ended tombstones already been installed into the new fixture and you did not film the swap? If so, that would be the source of my confusion. I do have some single ended fixtures and they are spring loaded at one end and so you have to push in that end when installing the bulb. The pressure of the spring keeps the bulb secure into the other receiver. If your new fixture in the video is shown with the single tombstones already installed, they are obviously not the same style as mine. Are those the newly installed single ended tombstones being shown in the new fixture? Sorry for the lengthy post but I’m curious.

@@mossman381 it turns out that the T5 size tombstones come apart pretty easily, but what I just found out is that, in the ones I replaced with the dummy tombstones, the copper clips on each side were NOT joined after all and I could have left them in the fixture. The T12 tombstones in my garage fixtures are so old that I'm fairly certain they would just break into pieces if I tried to open them. Single ended and double ended LED tubes are both type B tubes that bypass the ballast. Plug and play (Type A) and hybrid (Type A+B) LED tubes do work with a ballast.
@61JWolf
@61JWolf 3 года назад
@@cvsWebDesigns Single -ended LED tubes should have a black (hot) and white (neutral) wire connected to each tombstone on the powered end. Single-ended tubes require a non-shunted tombstone. For non-shunted tombstones there are two connection points on each end. In other words, non-shunted tombstones have a total of four connection points. In contrast, shunted tombstones only have two connection points on one of the ends of the tombstone. In a shunted tombstone, you only connect either hot or neutral, not both. In a non-shunted tombstone, you connect both hot and neutral. Just be sure that hot is connected on one end of the tombstone and neutral is connected at the opposite end. The second hole on each end of the tombstone is to jumper from tombstone to tombstone in a parallel configuration for multiple tubes. The tombstones on the other end of the fixture should not have any wires connected to them for a single-ended tube.

You used 18w tubes---if you used 23w tubes it would have been brighter... plus if you lowered them 5 feet or so things would be much brighter closer to where you actually are working. If you want brighter, you need more LUMENS. Look for bulbs with the most lumens or lumens per watt. You went with "single row" LEDs, but if you jumped to 23w or greater, they have about 2x as many LED's per tube... usually in a zig-zagged pattern. @@TriodeLuvr I stand corrected. I was under the impression that there is at least 100 ohms of resistance across magnetic ballasts. But, I don't know this for certain. Typical multimeters will not indicate continuity for more than 50 ohms. In any event, you still don't have to cut the wires from the ballast to the tombstones to determine if the tombstones are shunted. A visual inspection of the connection points will indicate what type they are. If the tombstone has two connection points at both ends for a total of four connection points, it is a non-shunted tombstone. If it only has a total of two connection points it is a shunted tombstone.
@TriodeLuvr
@TriodeLuvr 3 года назад
@@61JWolf It was over a year go that I rewired our fixtures, so my memory of the smaller details is a little fuzzy. One thing I do remember is that it wasn't possible to be certain of the configuration based solely on the way the tombstones looked or the number of wires. Maybe it's easier with some than others, I don't know. In any event, it's easy enough to strip the cut wires back and put them back together temporarily after the test, if you need to, using wire nuts. Mine all had plenty of slack for this. As an aside, I don't usually throw the breakers when I do this sort of work, simply because it disrupts the household so much. However, I'm meticulous about measuring at each incoming fixture wire for the presence of AC voltage before I start. The common lead of the meter is always touched to a known good ground for this, such as the frame of a nearby AC outlet or switch box. It's not sufficient to simply measure across the black and white wires for this test, and I don't rely on electricians to have wired the ground at the light fixture itself correctly. Also, I use a couple pieces of wide masking tape over the flip switch for the light I'm working on so another family member won't inadvertently turn it on in the middle of the job. In any situation where all these things can't be done, for instance, in the case of pushbutton switches or dimmers, I would flip the breaker as you suggest.

Yes, that is what I was trying to say. That is what the lady told me. Maybe she had an accent or something.

Where does one get the “scented” tombstones? I need my lights to smell good when they’re on!

It's "shunted" not scented. Some are "shunted", some are "non-shunted". Single ended requires non-shunted. There's a film clip on RU-vid that talks about how you convert a shunted tombstone to a non-shunted tombstone. Easy peasy.

My tombstones were scented with a watermelon honey scent. The other scented tombstone was scented with a potpourri scent. Smells nice. How on earth can anyone make a tutorial video and get the basic terms wrong. SHUNTED!! Scented? LOL

Listen dumbass, just because I have word wrong doesn't mean I don't know what I am talking about. The lady on the phone said SCENTED. ALL my info is correct in the video with the exception of the scented term.
@6977warrior1
@6977warrior1 3 года назад
@@mossman381 Excuse me, but I'm not the dumbass. Why didn't you tell her she was wrong? It's because you thought it was 'scented' without doing any research. and others below also laughed at 'scented'. And just today my scented tombstones gave off a strawberry scent. I'll have to change them tomorrow.

If you read the other comments then you would know that I already know I was told the wrong term. That doesn't make my info incorrect. I see you are one of those people that likes their own comments. That explains a lot.

This video is seriously dated and much of its advice should be ignored, especially the creator's preference for one-ended LED tubes. I'm amazed that energy-wasteful fluorescent bulbs that depend on even more energy-wasteful ballasts are still available, as ballast-free LEDs begin to seriously dominate the market. They're still around probably because the old fluorescent fixtures AND their bulbs are vastly cheaper. You can get a four-foot, two-bulb shop light fixture for about $15 and the fluorescent bulbs for about $2 apiece. The cheapest LEDs will be considerably more than twice that. The one-ended bulbs will likely be history soon because they're dangerous. They SHOULD be history now. Comments on this video prove few people know anything about the difference in LED bulbs and many will end up as many have sticking the wrong end of the tube in the hot end of the fixture. And when that happens, electrical hell breaks loose.

Thanks for the comment, confirms that dual ended tubes were the way to go. Did bypass ballast on a two tube T12 fixture and am using GE Type B T8 dual ended direct wire tubes. Find the light to be a bit too bright. Is it safe to just install one tube and leave the other empty? I've read somewhere that leaving sockets empty while powered on can be a fire hazard. Also, when I did the bypass I connected the two yellow wires on one tombstone to neutral, leaving the white jumpers connected to the other tombstone on the same side. Is it better to wire the other tombstone directly to the neutral as well, or are the existing wire jumpers ok?
