Flushed Away is a 2006 animated adventure comedy film directed by Sam Fell and David Bowers (in their feature directorial debuts), produced by Cecil Kramer, David Sproxton, and Peter Lord, and written by Dick Clement, Ian La Frenais, Chris Lloyd, Joe Keenan and Will Davies. It was the third and final DreamWorks Animation film co-produced with Aardman Features following Chicken Run (2000) and Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit (2005), and was the first Aardman project mostly made in CGI animation as opposed to starting with their usual stop-motion - this was because using water on plasticine models could damage them, and it was complex to render the effect in another way. The film stars the voices of Hugh Jackman, Kate Winslet, Ian McKellen, Shane Richie, Bill Nighy, Andy Serkis and Jean Reno.

If you have worked with people in France (many of my friends traveled there for work) unironnically this is true. They went to France expecting to work a whole day on a American schedule, and when meals came everything came to a screeching halt and the meal lasted for hours.

One of my favorite jokes is when Rita says that her father broke every bone in his body trying to find the ruby, and when he finally see him, he's literally wearing a full-body cast because of all the broken bones.

I appreciated that they didn't include a "Liar Revealed" plot. They were supposed to, with Roddy lying to Rita about promising her a Ruby if she took him up. Thankfully, they recognised it as clichéd.

1:06 To top that off, these characters, specifically Wallace and Gromit, have actually been responsible for saving a dying business. According to Allan Tsai’s channel (look him up if you haven’t, he’s got lots of great movie trivia), in the Wallace and Gromit short “A Grand Day Out,” when Wallace and Gromit are having their picnic on the moon, Wallace says “Wensleydale” when referring to a cheese he eats. According to the animators, they did this because it made his mouth look nice and toothy. At the time, Aardman did not realize that the Wensleydale cheese factory was about to declare bankruptcy, and after the success of the short, sales for their cheese skyrocketed, thus saving the factory.

Another reason this movie was CG was because Aardman Studios had a fire which broke out after the Wallace & Gromet movie came out and destroyed all their clay assets, so while they literally had to rebuild the studio, they had to use other forms of animation for the time being

"Bingo!" "Scrabble." "Enough games!" My sister and I quoted that short interaction so many times as kids, and we honestly still do. This was one of my favorite movies to watch as a kid, though admittedly it was one of the only movies we had on dvd, but even still, it was a great ride and I'm glad you enjoyed it as well.

It's subjective, and I'll have to respectfully disagree with you, there. I get that the Minions have grown to the point of being obnoxiously ubiquitous, but, personally, I find them easier to look at. The slugs in this movie make me feel uncomfortable, and I can't explain why.

I'll never forget this movie because this was the movie that my ex-boyfriend had taken me to see years ago. It was the perfect movie for kissing in the dark. Fun Fact: Aardman's first fully-CGI feature film. The reason for using computer animation, instead of the studio's trademark clay animation, was the numerous scenes involving water, which is nearly impossible to do convincingly in stop-motion.

I rewatched this one last month, and it *really* holds up. It's not deep or profound, but it's a solid comedy with likable, relatable characters. I love the singing slugs, I love the French frogs (especially the mime), I love the idiotic American tourists, I love the assorted Easter eggs, and I love Whitey's line about curry giving him a "bum like a Japanese flag."

Another Fun Fact: In the Mexican Spanish dubbed version of the film, the voice of the narrator of the World Cup final match between Germany and England was dubbed by a well-known soccer narrator in Mexico, being this Christian Martinolli, who has expressed that not although did the dubbing, his work was not paid

Another Fun Fact: In the scene where Roddy gets flown into the air in the sewers just after riding the flying teacup ride, several rats can be heard saying, "Is it a bird? Is it a plane?" referencing the Superman movies. Additionally, a tune similar to the Superman theme can also be heard amongst this.

What they should've done was make the first half of the movie claymation and the sewer part CGI. Like how in the wizard of oz everything is well not black and white just brown for the first half and then things get colorful for the second half when Dorothy gets the Oz

Another Fun Fact: Bill Nighy and Andy Serkis, who portrayed Whitey and Spike, respectively, played motion-captured villains in famous movie franchises. Serkis portrayed Gollum in The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings film franchises, while Nighy portrayed Davy Jones in the Pirates of the Caribbean film franchise.

Another Fun Fact: When Rita shuts down the power by pulling the lead from the console (approximately 52 minutes) the "shutdown" sound is from the Millennium Falcon in the Empire Strikes Back when Han Solo tries to engage the faulty hyperdrive after escaping from Hoth.

Another Fun Fact: When the halftime whistle blows for the football, the shot of the TV screen shows the score as 4 to England and 2 to Germany. This is in reference to the score of the final of the famous 1966 World Cup, where England won for the first and only time against Germany

@@koneheadcokehead4981 it later turned out that England lost the match on penalty grounds, yet I’m surprised there WASN’T a riot in the sewer equivalent to London (considering how seriously many in the United Kingdom take football)! Then again, I think their defeat at the World Cup final was overshadowed by Roddy & Rita saving them from mass genocide by flooding, which must’ve been heartwarming for Roddy in particular. This is because he has no family or friends back home within Kensington Gardens or the surrounding area. I also imagined the golden cage is symbolic of a glorified prison for Roddy, like Xanadu for Charles Foster Kane.

Another Fun Fact: When the stove falls through the floor of Rita's house, a cockroach that was sitting behind it can be seen holding a book. The book is Franz Kafka's novella "Metamorphosis", the protagonist of which turns into a (non specified) insect, which is often translated as a cockroach. The cockroach appears to be reading a French translation: the title "La métamorphose" is clearly seen, while the Ka- in Kafka is obscured by the insect's "hand".

I guess the unconventional framing that helps Chicken Run (not being cookie-cutter plot) in this case just makes the opening unpleasant and sends us off on a bad note. What I would always recommend is WRITE everything in medias res. Even if you don't start it that way, by adding the starting bits last you can make sure it starts off snappy and sets up exactly what it has to, with author knowing everything it leads to.

Found this out years ago via the bonus features on my "Curse of the Were Rabbit" DVD. There were a few reasons why Aardman had to do CGI for flushed away, but one of the big ones was the massive studio fire in October 2005. Without their inventory of plasticine and the devastating loss of archival pieces, Aardman stepped away from claymation for a while.

Another Fun Fact: At the beginning, Roddy puts on a movie called "Die Again Tomorrow". This pays homage to the James Bond movies Die Another Day and Tomorrow Never Dies. The cover nods to Goldfinger, and Roddy re-creates the gun-barrel from the start of each Bond movie.

Originally flushed away was supposed to be stop motion by aardman but Aardmen was being mistreated by dreamworks DreamWorks was not allowing them to do what they wanted and they just got rid of them afterwards this is the last Aardman film with DreamWorks

Another Fun Fact: In the first theatrical trailer, Roddy (Hugh Jackman) was not the only pet of the little human girl. There was also a cage with two small yellow gerbils, who seemed to be Roddy's manservants. However, in the final cut of the movie, these two characters were removed, probably to advance the story, and make Roddy appear to be a character who is more "alone" than "spoiled". The first trailer also shows the discovery of Sid (Shane Richie) during the day, instead of late at night.

I seriously love this movie. Greatly underrated. One thing I’m a bit surprised you didn’t mention in this review is that they use two tropes that you’ve said in the past you hated (the misunderstanding and the liar revealed), but they use them in ways that they show the stupidity of them. They literally either brush it aside or resolve the issue in a matter of seconds without the need to complicate things.

Fun fact: rats struggle when they are kept as one in a cage and it's seen as cruel to just have one. They're often caged in groups of two or more. This might explain why Roddy is going insane at the beginning of the film.
