Fly Anywhere in the World in 4 hours for $100 - The Boom Supersonic

In October of 2020, Boom Supersonic unveiled its latest and most ambitious project to date: an aircraft that could fly you anywhere in the world in a maximum of 4 hours for 100 dollars.
Almost two decades ago, the British-French turbojet-powered supersonic passenger airliner Concorde stopped operating due to costly operations and environmental damage.
But the Boom project could prove the second coming of high-speed travel at a fraction of the cost and even wholly carbon-neutral.
We are still a few years away from discovering if the gamble pays off, but this supersonic commercial aircraft would undoubtedly revolutionize the aviation industry.

A very cool video, but as an engineer, I was also intrigued how there was not one word addressing the core difficulty: traveling supersonic speeds, without the boom. Extreme ground and flight noise drove most airports to block Concorde. A huge part of the market was thus blocked. Boom claim to be able to design supersonic flight while reducing sonic-booms to an acceptable level, and NASA is also flying test jets with the same purpose, but so far without success. That should have also been addressed.

From what their engineering team has said, they have designed the aircraft to have a much smaller sonic boom profile and to keep the waves from coalescing together to form one big sonic boom, instead getting smaller ones which reach the ground seperated. Ideally these would be no more disturbing than a random puff of air such as that from a leaf blower but instantly appearing and disipating.

Supply and demand. With only a few aircraft available, airliners would have no choice but to up the price to counter the demand. With more and more supersonic airliners being produced, competition would force airlines to lower seat prices. Greed, however would keep those prices from going too low possibly. New tech could be the clincher though. I remember when HD TVs first came out. They were expensive. I remember seeing an ad in the newspaper for a 50in plasma screen TV for $10,000. I thought 50in was super huge but the price was super huge-er. Now, we can buy a 65in smart TV for closer to $500. But, this project seems very ambitious. Maybe too ambitious. As someone else pointed out, Boom Supersonic has yet to explain if their aircraft will be free of supersonic booms.

Lots of back and forth between the engineering folks and the aircraft designers. One thing is for sure, they are going the extra mile to keep things safe and light. He also told me something about them using high temperature wire loom clamps, that they weren’t necessary due to the temperature reducing panels and they added a lot more weight. They of course didn’t listen and were dealing with weight problems. Also, the front landing gear was taken out of an older platform and, to save on weight, it was going to be lowered by gravity alone. No hydraulics. Apparently, there also were issues with certain joints in this that were either not going to work or were going to break when used. All in all, it sounded great to begin with and the longer it went on the more it sounded like a complete disaster cobbled together from older platforms. The only thing new looked to be the frame.

Companies have a required rate of return on projects. This specific project is very risky, if they can't figure it out they fail, it's much easier to let a smaller startup try stuff like this and if they succeed then using their large companies to emulate and join as fast as possible. This is not where the profit is in airlines. From what I understand the real difficulty here isnt engine tech or fuel it's wing structure, there are a million ways to design a wing with a thousand different materials. I think the first economically viable Supersonic jets will likely be Private Jets where price of purchase and the extra fuel burn is less of a concern to plane owners, Due to the research done by NASA in cooperation with Lockheed Martin on the X-59 experimental project allowed for significantly lesser effects of sonic booms which will allow it to fly over land. The First private Super Sonic jets will likely be the Spike Aerospace S-512, being capable of Mach 1.6 and a carrying capacity of 12 to 16 people and The now Boeing backed Aerion AS2 carrying up to 12 people traveling at up to Mach 1.6 worth a flight distance of up to 4000 Nautical Miles (7400 KM) Aerion is also working on a Passenger jet capable of speeds of up to Mach 4 (3069 MPH / 4939 KPH) And then Boom Aerospace is make headway with “Baby Boom,” their test plane that will influence the design of the Passenger Overture Plane. JAXA (the Japanese Space Agency) is also working on a supersonic passenger aircraft. I’m really hopeful and Optimistic as being able to travel in half or even the quarter of the flight time of a normal jet would be great on long routes. That could mean a 20 hour flight from New York to Sydney could be five or less hours or Fly from Ny to London in less than 3 hours or NY to LA in a similar time.

@@AirWolfAT6 because I want my robot sex doll from Japan delivered to the US in a matter of hours not days 😆 seriously though it makes sense to use a large aircraft to deliver smaller packages instead of using a massive ship. @AirWolfAT6
@AirWolfAT6 2 года назад
@@austin_bennett I get it. It would save me from getting ants while waiting for my hard narcotics to arrive; but economies of sale compared to a B747 Freight, for example, makes it very uncompetitive.
@austin_bennett
@austin_bennett 2 года назад
@@AirWolfAT6 purely on an size & overall capacity I'd agree but there's also a niche where midsized deliver aircraft would be beneficial much like the usage of smaller jets & ships for interstate travel. So there's a potential circumstance where a midsized cargo plane would be able to deliver more packages then a truck but not as much as a jumbo jet yet at a much faster time then the 2 methods. It definitely has drawbacks but realistically most companies try to deliver things quick, cheap & efficient so despite being less efficient or cheaper than a jumbo jet in terms of overall quantity the speed could be the factor that makes it more efficient yet still come short in comparative cost.

Supersonic travel presents several problems, and it's not noise, but fuel consumption before it gains the speed and altitude, where it's most efficient. At taxi, and lower altitudes, including take off, and landing, it consumes 1/3 of its fuel. Supersonic bombers had been around for a while, but the cost of operating them has never been a concern.

The single biggest step that they need to achieve is a quiet boom. The first company that can build a supersonic aircraft to scale that won’t rattle peoples windows as it travels over populated areas will be the winner. The technology exists, and along with new materials and exponentially decreased design to manufacture times, it is almost a fait accompli that we will all be able to travel faster than the speed of sound in our lifetimes. I can’t wait.
@bob505470

A quiet sonic boom is not a goal of the company IIRC, at least its not a priority. That is why they are specifically targeting trans oceanic routes.

Turbofans dont work above 1500 km/h. Your need actual jet-turbines which however will take far more fuel. I simply can see any way a supersonic plane can operate at similar cost as a subsonic plane. I hope I am wrong and they actually got some revolutionary new technology.

I agree with you. Where does the fuel go? The concorde was close to empty just making it across the narrow Atlantic. Is there something we both miss? If boom is all carbon fiber and the same at concorde would weight reduction get it up so much higher the fuel burn decrease and the speed picks up with less drag? Does Boom's tech only mean less weight in a airplane that lacks space to tank fuel?;

Ed RDnc bring up a great point - sonic boom. Because sonic booms are fuselage generated, not engine noise, that is harder nut to crack There is most likely a solution not yet stumbled upon. Still.
