No matter your skill level in fly fishing, this principle is critical for good fly casting. Master this concept and you will cast farther with less effort.
In this video we look at the Rail concept and how beginner fly casters can understand it, intermediate anglers can improve on it and how master fly casters focus on it to reach competition level distance.

This is a great video! I've been fly fishing on and off for many many years, largely self-taught. Never have another "set of eyes" to watch me cast and offer tips and advice. Gets frustrating. Seeing small improvements tho but crossed a big hurdle last summer on casting thanks to these types of vids!!

Wow oh wow! Simply the best casting counsel I've ever seen. " THE RAIL!!!! This truly is a game changer. Also, the full arm extension while staying on the rail. Whoopee! As u can tell, I'm excited about this knowledge and technique. THANKS A MILLION

Excellent video Matt. I've been "tossing" a fly for many years and have developed bad habits here and there....and I am in awe of the guys on the shore who cast long, accurately and seemingly effortlessly. I understand the concept of keeping the rod tip on an even plane in order to keep a closed loop. I try to focus on keeping my rod in the 11 o'clock to 1 o'clock positions. I haven't thought of it in terms of power and I really like the Rail concept. I will definitely be putting this into practice.

I had some guy tell me to stop thinking about the tip of my rod, rather focus on my thumb, because the rod tip will always follow the thumb... That was a game changer for me.

Excellent video Matt Do you have a similar video on fly casting from a boat ? . I , myself have learned from your teaching fly casting and still getting better all the time . Problem I have is telling this to my fishing buddy. He thinks he knows what he’s doing and doesn’t listen to me when I try to correct him. I tell you , I have to brace myself every time we’re out in the boat . When he’s fly casting he’s using his whole body rocking the boat so much, I have to sit down . After all that rocking he’s only getting out 25 ft . Indicator fishing. Do you have a video from out of a boat ? . I’d sure like to show him . I’m tired of telling him he’s trying to hard . One other thing is he tries to rifle it like he’s trying cast across the other side of the lake and it lands 20 feet 😅 . Just saying

It’s normal for beginners to grip way too hard. Loosen up. You only need to tighten up on the stops.

Funny, the best casters I've ever seen Flip Pallet, Lefty, Brian Flieshing, Jose W all never move their body because you never need to. If you are competitive long casting sure, fishing, never. This is a video for folk who want to be long casters, not fisherman.

This is a fair comment Brandon. And an interesting theory to debate. On the beginner and intermediate levels of this concept, all of the casters in your list follow a rail. They might achieve it in different ways. On the body movement and extension, you will find learning how to extend and move will make u a much better caster even if you don’t use it. On your list I have had the privilege of “fishing” and casting with 3 of them. I can’t speak to the others. 2 of the guys on your list (one may he rest in piece) are/were rock star casters. They could go from zero movement, wrist casting to full body arm casting without thinking about it and I saw them apply this in multiple fishing scenarios. There is another guy on your list who is a little more adamant about staying stationary. I have fished behind him in a drift boat and would have no problem doing it again. He was quite “mad” about not being able to keep up with the casters around him and it cost him fish. All the best - good food for thought comment.
