Quick 4 hours before the heat came on the farmington today ... one bruiser took a 12 red dart, two browns on a 16 pliva, and one fiesty little native (?) brown smashed a 12 red dart also ... fish were hungry early and turned off quick which I guess is deep summer fishing.

Nice video. That big brown looked different than the 1st. 2. Worm like spots like a brook/brown hybrid. Maybe?

Yikes ! Nice job and a pig of a brown 👍The Farmington is such a great river, fishes well all year long and any fish you get into can be a tank ! Try and hit it twice a month! Pulled some good ones at the spot you fished , which is hit hard regularly! These fish will feed regardless, it’s just a matter of giving them what they want ! Love the content, keep the videos coming!! Tight lines

Thanks for watching! I love that spot for the ease of filming but they can get picky quick there.

That spot where you were at can be feast or famine but can hold some serious browns. A lot of people spin cast there. In the fast run at the end of your video I pulled a 20” brown out of there. 2 years ago it would be rare to see anyone now it’s packed. Great video!

Thanks for watching ! I love that spot for ease of filming from the side I fished and I could not believe I only saw two more people in 4 hours. I need to do a lot more exploring without camera and find some more good filming spots.

@@fly-f1sh140 there’s a couple good spots that are filming friendly just a little more north of where you were. There’s a decent spot that would be the same just north of Church’s Pool but there’s always like 3-5 people fishing that run

Nice video, I was thinking about trying the spot by Callahan park. Do you think it would be good this time of year? Or is it too far down the river?

I think give it a go early morning for sure. Its pretty deep in there.

Derek u mentioned you didn’t like the micro leader you tried can you explain the leader system you went back to. I’m in the process of setting up a dedicated euro reel with euro line just looking for a simple But effective leader set up. I don’t think the micro leader would be the way to go for me either at least not yet. Thanks

Definitely ... So far my current favorite rig is 20 feet of 14lbs Cortland Euro Nymph Nylon (any 14-15 lbs you like really maxima, amnesia, etc) right to 18 inches of .013 sighter. that gives me a 14 lbs to 12 lbs drop. My next attempt will be to a 12 lbs to 10 lbs drop I think. My shortcoming is that when I drop below 10 pounds I snap the leader in the middle usually from a snag or just not paying attention. I also prefer to have the least knots possible so I sacrifice some casting ability for that by not building a taper to the end. My rig is more of a hard hat lunch pail style.

@@fly-f1sh140 thanks for the reply. I will give it a try as I dig my way through this maze they call Euro Nymphing

Im new to fly fishing but what do you mean "red dart" is that a fly pattern. Dont chastise me guys just trying to learn. Thanks

@fly-f1sh140 2 года назад
Thanks for watching ! That is exactly what I mean when ever you hear me say "he took a red dart" or "got him on the mop" . You can google any of those patterns and places to buy them and videos on how people tie the flies will come up.

Great Video, What's your go-to tippet size you go to on the Farmington.
@fly-f1sh140
@fly-f1sh140 3 года назад
Thanks for watching .... I always start with 5x Cortland Premium Flouro, If I struggle I will drop to 6x. If I see fish feeding or rising all over and I am not catching anything I will reduce bead size and tippet size if that makes sense. I only go to 7x when I want to torture myself a bit.

Why not work on dry fly fishing?
@fly-f1sh140
@fly-f1sh140 Год назад
Good question ... primarily because I have limited time to fish and I want to go with the strongest hand possible. I spent a good 20 years trying to fish both and had some success here and there. When I made the decision to focus on nymphing with a tight line rig my success shot through the roof and I did not have to rely on surface feeding fish. I kind of never looked back. I should incorporate more back in for sure and I probably will when I can fish any day I want to. For now though, I can take my tight line rig to any trout stream in almost all conditions and be successful. From Maine down to North Carolina the exact flies and techniques in this video have produced many fish without the need of knowing any hatches, having specific flies, or being there "at the right time".
@alanstrober6296
@alanstrober6296 Год назад
@@fly-f1sh140 I totally get. I have been fly fishing for almost 30 years and just recently purchased a tight line nymph rig. I’m looking forward to putting it in action at some point. I’m having surgery today on my wrist so it’s going to be a little while.

Start from the bridge over the Farmington and go up stream. Every parking spot will have fish. It is not easy though and it will take time to learn.
