Fly Fishing for Bull Redfish in Southeast Louisiana - Leader, Rod, Reel, Line and Flies!

I'm sight fishing bull reds in Southeast Louisiana in this video! There's not much as exciting as Fly Fishing for Redfish...they were made for the fly. This trip, I found myself in the marsh with near perfect sight fishing conditions. One flat was staked with big redfish and another held giant black drum. Sneaking around dropping flies from a kayak to cruising and tailing redfish is too much fun. It's hard to explain how exciting sight fishing redfish is but I hope this video shows why I start checking the weather daily when October rolls around. All I need is 2 or 3 days of high sun and low winds and I head south and pole the flats looking for shadows!
Look for more redfish videos as the season starts for me. Including tips and tactics and things I look for when I'm in the marsh.
I walk through my gear, leader and some productive flies near the end of the video.
You can see how I rig my kayak to sight fish here: • Fly Fishing for Grass ...
And how I use a carabiner to quickly build my leaders here: • Video

Really good job for a guy by himself just fishing. Not too much BS on the trip there, shopping for gear, etc... which is just a boring filler in many vlogs. Good clean camera angles that let you see the action. I appreciate your personal skill level without all the fancy boats and guides to do the work for you. That is how most regular guys fish! Actually lots of info in there like paying attention to weather and tide conditions, stealth and quiet presentations, gear made simple. The same stuff I pay attention to in my fishing even though I'm from Alaska. Thanks. I subscribed.

Dude great video. Are you fishing mostly incoming tide? Nothing worse than being stuck at low tide. Those are big Red fish. I’ve seen a lot around 5-7lbs but some of those looked really big. Thanks for lines , rigging and flies at the end. Loved the warning about the barb. Anyone who has ever thrown big weighted flies has a few crazy stories about getting hooked on a front cast or fly shooting out of he water back at your face. Cool change of pace in this one. Thanks for the video!
@LooknFishy
@LooknFishy 3 года назад
Mostly like a falling tide but an incoming is a close second. Have had to push thru the muck a few times lol. Yea, only takes one hook in the calf to learn to pinch those barbs lol!

Great video! Do you ever feel like the 8 wt is a little light for the big bull reds? I'm going back and forth between getting an 8 wt or 10 wt for Louisiana redfish.
@LooknFishy
@LooknFishy 2 года назад
I bring a 9 for days when I see more true bull reds. I'd definitely go up to a 9 or 10 if I targeted them only but the 8 works for a few and all the slots!

I fish eastern Louisiana for reds, slightly different environmental conditions in that still sight fishing but almost exclusively marsh grass shores & islands as opposed to where Drew was. I am fishing the shallow duck ponds and shoreline edges out of a 16ft Hewes Redfisher. Fish typically run from 22" to low-mid 30's and can be a bit more wary / spooky. I use a 6wt Sage RPLX with Billy Pate reel and smaller unweighted flies. Some areas have mostly over-slot Reds 28" and up. That Sage 6wt has the backbone to cope with their runs and bulldog power. Biggest Red on that setup was 33". I have a matching 8wt but only take that in the fall for spawning schools in "deep" water.

I’ve done this a couple times, (but using a sit-on-top kayak), and when I get to a spot, or hook a fish, I would put a pole through the hole in the kayak so I don’t get pulled around. I was kind of wondering why you don’t do that or choose not to?
@LooknFishy
@LooknFishy 2 года назад
I'm in a sit on top also. I have done the same and also used a 5lb dumbbell attached to a retractable dog leash. But moved on to a powerpole which I use now to do the same. Just didn't use it on this day bc it was making a weird noise and spooking fish!

I look for shadows, wakes and listen for the signs of feeding reds. Plus, my copper lenses really help when the sun is high...it'll paint them in the stain. A few were also tailing.
