What an awesome episode! Carp are extraordinary game fish - as much of the world recognizes, and US anglers are slowly beginning to acknowledge. A beautiful video, and a master class on the stealth - and respect - carp demand. Many thanks for sharing this video!

Well done, Carp are loads of fun. Actually the best way to fight big fish with fixed line rods is to apply side pressure switching from right to left, and vice-versa. My big fish/heavy current rod is the Dragontail Hellbender, also a nice rod.
@FlickyFlies
@FlickyFlies 2 года назад
100%! Honestly, I had just gotten this new rod and kind of wanted to see how it handled generally upward pressure, and it did that just fine without ever feeling out of control. If I had hooked into a really hot one that was bigger than these ones, I woulda been moving all over the place and only using side pressure. I'd love to cast the hellbender sometime too, seems like an awesome rod.

I Tenkara for my local 6 pound Carp without a beefed up Tenkara rod. I use a Tanuki Shonobi 395 with 4x. The bend of the rod, which is amazing, handles the bigger fish with zero issues. It typically takes 3 to 4 minutes to land the fish. They fight very well with splashes from tail whips but no jumps. The weirdest fight was a damn foul hook in the tail. Took 10 minutes. The fish are very hardy and recover quickly. If you can stall a size 10 Woolly Bugger right in their face, they will bite. Also, fight them from left to right and then right to left, repeat and repeat. I have the Wasatch rods as well and they are a very strong rod that does instill Confidence! Happy fishing!

I so love that carp on tenkara are becoming a more commonplace thing to hear about. It used to be so taboo and unthinkable, but tenkara rods are actually quite good at it. Especially if you can get close enough to some feeding fish and feed them the fly using their intrinsic stealthy qualities. And, as you know, the fight can't be beat with no reel to get in the way. Just exhilarating!

Its really good fun! Definitely do some research on which rods are suitable. Daikyu T-hunter and Tenkara Rod Co Rocky are good for American stuff. Nissin makes a beautiful rod called the Flying Dragon that’s made in Japan and specifically designed for carp. I own one, but broke it on a hook set and I don’t completely trust it / can’t afford to fix it lol. Probably going to sell it soon. Good luck and feel free to reach out with any questions.

Awesome video, subscribed and will be watching more after I post this. I have been targeting carp on Tenkara for the last month or so after chasing redfish with Tenkara. I live coastally but I am helping the family in Kansas and started chasing the carp as redfish training. After stalking them in clear water I quickly realized they were more difficult than redfish.
@FlickyFlies
@FlickyFlies 2 года назад
Are you the angler who's pictures I've seen on Facebook maybe? Using a Hellbender? I would love to target redfish on tenkara! That's really cool man. Carp can be so incredibly finicky, for sure. Sometimes they are on, but usually you have to present the fly just right. I've never fished for redfish, from the videos I've seen they definitely seem to chase down the fly a bit more. Thanks for watching! More carp stuff coming soon - I just filmed a video yesterday where I targeted large ones out on a big flat.

@@FlickyFlies I do not have a Facebook account so it couldn't be me. I only have cheap Goture Tenkara rods from Amazon currently but I am looking at the Rodzilla really hard after watching your video and checking out WASATCH. After putting up a video of Tenkara Redfish a buddy challenged me to target the biggest brute along the Texas coast and throw at a Jack Crevalle which with my current gear would almost certainly be an epic failure but a great video. You would enjoy stalking redfish in the flats, they fight more than carp and are a very aggressive predator fish that while wary will still assault a good presentation. Keep going big on the Tenkara, with so much competition out there on RU-vid you may have a niche where your fishing and awesome video production talent can really get some attention.
@FlickyFlies
@FlickyFlies 2 года назад
@@curmit Ah, gotcha! My next carp video coming out is actually filmed with the Rodzilla instead of the T-Hunter. The Rodzilla is the perfect carp rod, IMO. I was really impressed. It handled really hot carp in the upper 20 inch range no problem. Jack Crevalle would be wild! Thanks for the motivation - big fish on fixed line is certainly fun and I'll definitely keep making more. BTW - I might have an affiliate link coming up for the Rodzilla purchase with that video if you're interested in purchasing it through that. Stay tuned!

G'Day, Really enjoyed your tenkara carp video. I usually fly fish for trout but over the last few summers, I've targeted carp during the really hot spells. I use a 6wt outfit with a few different flies--had the most success with a Black Woolly Worm. Carp on a tenkara rod--that would be a challenge. I have around 6 tenkara rods mostly fixed length up to 12 foot with a few shorties and a 9'/10'6" zoom rod. Do you think the 12 footer would be up to the task? I wouldn't risk using any tippet over 5X/4 pound strength. Thanks for your video, Cheers, Steve
@FlickyFlies
@FlickyFlies 2 года назад
Hey Steve! Thanks for watching! They are so much fun, and it's definitely nice being able to target them no matter the water temp. Black flies always seems to be particularly effective. Give the McTage's Chubby Chaser a try, it stands up on it's head, sticking a rabbit fur strip tail up into the water column. Which tenkara rod do you have? I'd be really hesitant to give any 12 foot rod a try unless it's built specifically for big fish. Dragontail Hellbender, Wasatch Tenkara T-Hunter or Rodzilla, a big keiryu rod, any of Zen Tenkara's big rods.

Great video mate. I’m off to Thailand in July and I’m hoping to catch some snakehead and Mahseer on a tenkara Rod.Both can get pretty big I believe so interesting to watch how you deal with bigger fish. Any tips ?
@FlickyFlies
@FlickyFlies 2 года назад
Very cool! My number one tip would be to apply side pressure. Turn the rod from left to right and keep the fishing from swimming away from you at full power. You also want to keep a good bend in the rod, and try to point the butt of the rod towards the fish. This will give you the most power, but also presents the greatest risk of breaking the rod, so maybe keep the rod a bit stretched out at first to see how powerful the fish are, and if you think you can apply more pressure safely, try to point the butt. It’s really a practice and feel kind of thing, but I bet if you can get into a few you’ll get the hang of it.
@tenkarafanatic
@tenkarafanatic 2 года назад
@@FlickyFlies great tips. Thanks. The largest fish I have caught to date is about a 15 inch stocked rainbow. And they just don’t put up as much fight as a wild fish in my limited experience. So yes. Really looking forward to getting in to some of the fish in Thailand. I have ordered the Gamakatsu MULTIFLEX TENKARA SUIMU EX 5.0 from Japan for the trip in the hope of getting into some bigger fish. I also intend to fish the Mekong river as my wife’s family live right next to it. Either way it should be an interesting trip fishing wise. Thanks again
