So this video is taken from footage I recorded on the 25th June 2024. I had a half day off so I decided to fish a small stream for the first time this season. As I was fishing the lower reaches of the burn, I also wanted to try fly fishing in the sea for sea trout. The evening I booked one of Portree Angling Association's boats on Loch Fada for the first time this season in hope of connecting with some of the resident wild brown trout. It turned out to be a really good, varied & challenging days fishing.
I hope you enjoy the video and I really appreciate any feedback on the content on the channel. As always, many thanks to all the people that subscribe to the channel, I really appreciate it. Thank you also to the people that comment and like the videos, again, it really is appreciated as is the continued support. Thank you.
TACKLE USED
Steam/burn - 3 wt rod, WF3 floating line, small black klinkhamer
Sea - 6/7 wt rod, WF7 floating line, Mike's Sandeel & a Peter Ross
Loch - 5 wt rod, WF5 floating line, single Mayfly pattern caught the two better fish. The smaller fish I caught that evening & not on camera, fell to a small bead head bibio & a bibio snatcher

Thank you 👍 they’re all stunning in their own right, but the ones in that burn I think are wee crackers. Glad you enjoyed it & thanks for watching & commenting.

Great sample of the sport to be had on Skye! I was on the edge of my seat expecting a sea trout to take! Much like the real thing - usually a let down 😂 Those loch browns just don't surrender do they? Best, Dave 👍❤️

Another great wee video Mat. Good to see that you fish even the smallest streams and clearly enjoy yourself. Inspiration to the up and coming anglers! Well done! Some lovely wild brown trout . Thanks for sharing.

Cheers Mike, usually even I can catch fish in these wee burns 😆 it’s a good place to go when you’ve experienced a sequence of gruellers! No, I really enjoy wandering up small streams, this one in particular is really nice, you can practically jump across it in the upper reaches. I agree, if I ever took a young person fishing, a small stream would be a good start. I think the bay there will be a good place to target sea trout in the salt, I think a bit further along than i had time to fish that day, could be good. All the best as always 👍

Lovely wee river, I know where it is from the mountains! Only ever fished the Staffin on the isle, albeit many years ago. There were some lovely brownies in that also.

Lots of excellent footage, nice brownies. I had plans to be up to Skye again this week for a weeks holiday, but circumstances have conspired against me 🙁. Hopefully next year. Keep the videos coming, they're great.

Oh, shame you couldn’t make it up this week. Forecast is sunny and dry this week, not ideal for salmon if that is any small consolation! I’ve not fished much recently but I hope to fish the Last Cast competition on Loch Leathan this weekend. I’ll then be desperately praying for plenty of rain that leaves the rivers perfect for my usual Friday cast and Saturday. I need to try to get a bit more time after salmon before Oct 15th as I’ve just not had much time in decent conditions. Glad you liked the video thank you as always. I have more footage from the wee burn fishing that day so I may end up rehashing that into its own video, it’ll be one for over those long winter nights 😆 all the best 👍

I fished the lochs and burns of north Skye back in the 80's and 90"s. Stayed with my aunt and uncle in their croft at Brogaig. My uncle used to say that Salmon could get into the Brogaig burn only on the biggest spates and highest tide. The crofters would be running about with pitch forks trying to get them. I never thought it possible that Salmon and sea trout would get access because of the storm beach and like you only ever caught wee trout in that burn. Staffin burn was excellent for Salmon and Sea trout in August. There was set Salmon nets in Staffin Bay then. The Lealt was good too and another crazy river with just the one pool to fish. I'm guessing the runs are very small now like all west coast rivers. Nice to see and brings back memories.

Hi David, glad it brought back some good memories for you, a lot of what you say about the past, rings true from info I’ve been told too. Yes, our runs of migratory fish are pretty small now but you can still encounter fish and fortunately I have had fish from nearby rivers in most seasons. We try to take as much care with the fish as we can due to the stocks being largely on the decline. I hope to get a go for salmon in this area before the season is out, but yes, the wee burn here is gorgeous with pool after pool and run after run, it can throw up the odd 10 inch plus trout and some more ‘seasoned’ club members often talk of good trout hiding in the narrow upper reaches. The lochs at the top of the catchment are decent in their own right. Thanks for sharing your past experiences, much appreciated.

Excellent can i ask what weight rod
@highlandfishingdiary8818
@highlandfishingdiary8818 День назад
No problem - it’s a budget Maxcatch (£60) 3 weight rod with a 3wt floating line that I use on the small river. The sea a 6/7 weight & the loch dry fly at end of video is a 5 weight rod. I add details if you click on the video description. Many thanks 👍
