Who would have thought that driving a few hours North would make the difference in my quest for brook trout! This is a little creek that I have done a ton of research on in the Winter, and I have been meaning to get out and hit it for a while now. Lawrence Creek was ground zero for some of the first management studies of wild trout populations in the United States. Its full effects were amazing to see! The creek, bug life, and most of all the fish were looking about as good as can be. We were able to catch them on both the nymph and dry fly! That made for a really exciting close quarters battle. As the spring begins to give way for warm summer days, do not be afraid of little spring creeks like this! That is where the fish are going to want to sit!

You should do some fly tying vids and how you set up your rigs and what not. Great vids, by far my favorite fishing channel on RU-vid, keep up the great work!!

Sick video, I also live in Wisco and fish the driftless quite often. I am fairly new to fly fishing but love it, it's so dope. Anyways cool video, and that "sliding" hopper is a super cool idea, you should post a how-to video of how to tie it and rig it! Glad to have found my new favorite fishing channel, tight lines!

Biennial Report of the State Conservation Commission of Wisconsin fiscal year ending June 30,1917 and June 30,1918 states that the brook trout in Lawrence Creek were hatchery brook trout.

HOLY SH**, that brookie at 10:30. You are a jedi my man. Crazy tough stream to fish in, I know how challenging that is. Tight quarters, silt, easily spooked fish. This trip was a gold mine given what you were up against. Digging the hoodie/jersey combo too lol. Keep rolling man!

Fished that creek many time. However I strictly used dries and have done well. Maybe next time I’ll try some small scuds and pheasant tails.

In the end the fish aren’t that picky. They’ll hit anything that links like food. I’ve been fishing this creek longer than I care to remember and the average size of the fish I catch now are around 8”. They used to be mostly tiny little guys.

Please do not tell the DNR that you caught the biggest Brook Trout where there was trees along side Lawrence Creek that provided the nutrients needed for healthy Brook Trout in Lawrence Creek. I could not imagine what size these Brook Trout could grow to if they had the nutrients that the river trees (black willow tree, cottonwood tree) leaves, seeds, branches would furnish to the invertebrates of Lawrence Creek and shelter and food for small mammals and insects along side Lawrence Creek. Is the grass along side of Lawrence Creek Native? Did you encounter any minnow like fish, frogs, crayfish, voles, mice, water shrew, salamanders, grasshoppers, crickets, etc needed by Brook Trout over 12 inches in their food chain in Lawrence Creek?

I sure did! That little creek was absolutely teeming with life! I saw a ton of bug life and scared more than a handful of little rodents as I was making my way up! Such a fun day!

Enjoying your trips out to the driftless. I just went there for the first time several weeks ago. Is a 4wt your go to for dry droppers? You think a 7'6 3wt would be alright, or even a 2wt?
@FLYALLSZN
@FLYALLSZN 4 года назад
Thank you so much! YES! That is the exact spec of one of the main rods I like to use!! Short leaders and weight forward line are key for these tight quarters!!
