Finally got out into the backcountry for the first proper trip of the season!
Typical early season weather conditions gave me a bit of everything but the river conditions were good to me and I managed to get onto some beautiful fish after a rocky start to the day.

Sounds like a rough few weeks, mate, but we can all learn a lesson from the way you recognise negative emotions and take steps to manage them. Too easy to let a small setback dominate our minds for a few hours, or your big setback with the boat ruin your mood for days. Anyway, nice work with your day in the back country - beautiful place to re-set and some stunning fish. Like a mini Tongariro. you are a master with the dragless slow drifts. I must admit, though, i often watch you and other RU-vidrs walk along tracks with rods pointed forward and wait for the inevitable. I was taught to walk with the rod pointed behind me - still get snagged on ferns etc, but not in a way that forward momentum can break a rod tip. Just my thinking, not telling you what to do!!

One of the things I do when I go bush wacking is to break down in half and use a couple of rubber bands to keep the rod from flopping around. Shorter over all package makes for an easier hike and lest breakage. All most all my rods are two piece, but you can do the same with 4 piece rods. Save money on broken rods for the high priced gas to get to the places to fish.

oh wow... those NZ rivers are just stunning. we have trout to about 50cm in our local river here in the UK but the surroundings are nothing like that, and the water isn't gin-clear like there amazing fish, btw... looking forward to when they fatten up after the big fly hatches

It’s always interesting to see the difference in the type of gear you use vs what I’m used to in the states. I’m typically using size 22-30 midge imitations on 2 and 3 wt rods for bows.

Great video Alex! A couple of years ago I bought a Scott Centric 5 weight and broke its tip within 30 minutes of fishing it. Scott did a great job taking care of the problem. The river in your video looked fantastic--not to mention the fish... Thanks for sharing.

Morning from the UK. What a session that turned out to be, bet that was good for the soul! I really appreciate you showing the 'rod failure' as I'm sure its happened to most of us and I know the level of the gear you use which in a strange way makes me feel better about my rod breakages. Had a similar thing a couple of months ago, no idea how it happened as I didn't feel anything really just heard a tinkle noise and noticed my rod tip hanging off!

Always look forward to new content Alex. Hopefully your recent trials are just a bump in the road. I have a question I’ve been meaning to ask. Why don’t you use a retractor on your landing net? I see you repeatedly juggling it between your legs or on the bank. Don’t you get frustrated with it?

It’s too heavy for a retractor bro. It annoys me sometimes but it is good for the fish so I put up with it as that’s important to me👍
