In this full show we are fly fishing for trout, using our raft to float the upper river and hit the famous Skwala hatch. We fish with dry flies and nymphs and catch and release some truly magnificent Cutthroats. The Bitterroot River is a very popular all season long but the Skwala hatch holds something special for many people. We decide to take our time getting on the water and let other boats get in front of us a ways, so it is a fairly mild temperature when we first carve the water with our oars. We start with Skwala nymphs and San Juan worm patters but quickly switch to Skwala dry flies as we see the actual see rising and anticipate the hatch. With the Skwala hatch it does not seem like there needs to be a lot of actual bugs hatching to get the fish keyed in on them. The numbers of strikes really picks up at the peak of the hatch. We are able to catch fish for the rest of the afternoon and early evening with the Skwala Dry Flies. A super-fun day enjoying the outdoors of Montana.
We have purchased flies and gotten advice from the local fly shops in Darby, Montana like Bitterroot Fly Company (bitterrootflycompany.com/) Mike from Northwest Outfitters (nwoutfitters.com/) shows us how to use desiccant powder to get our flies floating again. I hope you enjoy this full show.
Fly Fishing with Ladin's primary purpose is to share fly fishing techniques and places to fly fish in the Western United States. We are a dedicated fly fishing RU-vid channel promoting catch and release fly fishing. Our motto is having fun catching and releasing fish. We want to share our passion with others. We are not professionals. We are passionate about fly fishing but we do not take ourselves to seriously. We show our mistakes, falling in, getting flies stuck in wrong places, loosing fish. The same things that all of us experience fly fishing. We have been fly fishing northwest waters for over forty years. But we are always learning new things that we like to pass along. We think our channel is a great place to get ideas for fly fishing vacations and weekend trips.
We sincerely thank you for taking the time to check out our channel and watch our videos. We hope you enjoy them and sure would 👏appreciate your support by subscribing to our channel. Every single one helps. Share with friends. Click the bell and get notifications of our new videos. Two new great places to fly fish each week.

I really like how you show mistakes/bloopers., rather than just big fish. So refreshing. I float all these rivers in the area all summer and your videos seem to capture what it’s really like. It’s not always about a picture of a big brown! Thanks man!

Ladin, love your videos. Not to be picky, but the access is Hannon, not Hannah. Hahaha!!!!! Jim Mitchell, owner of the Bitterroot Fly Company is a friend of mine. Fish the river, especially the West Fork, often.

What boat setup are you rowing here?

It is a Dave Scaddon raft with an NRS frame.

Why the raft instead of the Clacka?

Probably could have use the boat but we heard the Bitterroot was a little more technical. Lots of debris. So we opted for the raft. A bit more maneuverable

if you run a hard boat on the root you’re a kook

Great vid! Two ideas for better survival of catch and release trout: 1. Use an underwater camera to take your pics with the fish in the water and 2. Use a no-touch catch and release tool, so you never have to handle the fish. TU recommends both of these (never touching the fish and never taking them out of the water) for the best success at survival. I use the "Ketchum Release" tool myself, slides right down the line and unpins the fly effortlessly. Tight lines!!!
