One thing I learned about fly-fishing was always lead with the tippet. If your floating line is headed downstream first it means you have too much slack and you'll have trouble setting the hook. Also, sometimes fish strike at air bubbles above or below the fly, get a strike indicator so you'll see when they actually take the fly.

Thanks alot. Yeah while I was editing the video I noticed that there was WAY too much slack in my drift. And yeah I also read about tying "hotspots" onto the bug so you can see it dissapear better.

I'm pretty sure that little snake was a copperhead... Also, when I used to do some panfish fly fishing I had lots of luck with a foam spider

Not really sure what species it was... I tend to stay away from them anyways! Yes, I've learned a lot since this video, watching it back i wasn't mending properly and never had a tight line.

Those rock bass looked like fun. You're making me want to try fly fishing again!

You just gotta have it in your mind you want to do it. As you know there was plenty of fishing (even off camera) where it wasn't this fun. Lol.

Just curious, have you ever eaten any rock bass? They look like they would have some thick filets! Another great vid brother!

Yes I have. Taste just like any other Panfish like bluegill or redbreast. I don't really keep fish often at all. Usually only when my buddy Chris is and I really like Rock Bass...so I don't like to eat them lol. No real echical explanation just me being a human and saying "I like that fish better than that one" LOL. But go for it, it's your right to eat and keep if you want!

@@theeverydayangler I am with ya bro, I keep fish like maybe twice a year, I like catching them too much to kill them!! I was curious because I haven't ever caught one of those.

Was that not a baby copperhead? Looked like a triangle shaped head to me. Steer clear or find you a little stainless 38 to carry with you and keep some bird shot in it, get your handgun permit of you don't have one, keep your mouth shut, and keep on moving. Those bird shot loads are pretty quiet and in a creek is not where Chattanooga PD is gonna be looking. Keep a speedloader of some hollow points ready to go too though for social work big guy. So I know people fly fish, but is the goal catching fish or taking up as much room as possible casting, haha.just messing with you. Never done fly fishing but my dad used to. The whole issue of taking up as much space as possible was his quote back in the day. He went back to normal line and normal casting and did much better and would fill his limit and mine too 😁. Keep it up! You are doing great! Next time it's some 6 or 4 lb floro and some light spinning gear. I can't talk much. I spent a week in FL and did some surfcasting and some on the bay too and only got 1 worthwhile bite and missed it but it nearly pulled my rod in before I could get to it and I still could not get a hookset. I tried my casting net for the first time and after about 5 tries I got 2 little minnows and was exhausted in the heat. My son fished for 2 mins and caught a fish after I had fished for 10 hrs over 3 days.

Haha yeah that's how it goes sometimes, y'all don't get to see when I don't catch anything only if I do ..well sometimes lol. And yeah I've ultralight fished this creek many times. It's usually pretty empty when I go so I decided it'd be a good place to "take up all the room" haha. And I agree of the goal is to catch doesn't matter what you use, but I'm really enjoying fly fishing right now, feels like I'm learning to fish all over again!

@@theeverydayangler I bet on the trying to learn to fish again. I need all the help I can get and I only use spinning and baitcast reels mostly and I curse the baitcasters about every 10 casts. I have just this year really tried more with them and then I slip up and put a light lure on and bird's-nest it and get frustrated and think about going to the range and it's too hot to shoot, too hot to hunt, but fishing sure ate all of my turkey hunting time up this year. Keep it up big guy 💪

Fishing small fish like panfish you should just lift your rod tip up or you’re gonna rip their lips trying to set the hook
@theeverydayangler

Thanks for the tip! I've just wachted so much stuff on strip striking but I guess that is for bigger fish. Now I just set the hook one way or another. But I could've been ripping out of there mouth now that I think about it.
