Summer is a great time to go high elevation in search of 'happy' trout. In this episode of 'on the water', Rick heads into the alpine region of Strathcona Park to pursue some of the trout there in the alpine lakes.
Rick Janzen is a fly tier with over forty year's experience flying tying and fly fishing in British Columbia. On this channel he shares his favorite flies with you that you can then copy or adapt them to your situation. He will also be doing 'on the water' episodes in which he will demonstrated the hows, whens and wheres of fishing his flies.
Rick is also a salmon fishing guide in Campbell River BC on the renowned Tyee Pool. See his website here:

Yes, head up to the high elevation lakes in the Paradise meadows area. As you visit each lake look for 'happy' fish rising and jumping. They are usually near shore. Small flies work best up there. Dries work fine as well as micro-leeches or small nymphs. I'm talking size 14 and 16. Lake Helen-Mackenzie is a great place to start as it has some good shoreline areas to cast from as does Croteau lake. Good luck!
