We used to sing a camp song about the Neversink. I spent many hot summer days cooling off there. Great video, will have to give it a shot next time I'm up that way!

Hi, have not fished the Neversink since the 70’s. After reading Bergmans “Trout” we fished it down in Oakland Valley many times between the old bridge and where the river crosses the main rd. upstream. The area is well below where you fished in the video. I think the area you fished was closed or private for many years. Great for a number of years. Beautiful piece of water. I think the area is closed now or part of a camp ground. If you ever go by let me know what you find. Thx. Nice video of an old favorite!

Very nice video, i too have fished the gorge like about 50 times. Its my favorite river, its not as easy as it looks. There are about 6 parrking lot spots. That i know of, 90% brownies, 6% brookies, 3% rainbows, & 1% landlocked salmon. 9 times out of 10 your catching a wild one no quest especially from Katrina falls rd to Oakland valley rd. It is also the most slippery river that you will ever come across. There are very few spots in the gorge that produces dry fly action. It is a streamer and nymph river no quest. Always try to go with a friend because if you ever get injured, where ever you left your car, its a ways trust me. One more advise, always fish it between 150-300 cfs. Tight Lines!

I 100% agree, this river is treacherous to wade. Also agree on going with someone, smart choice. I had no idea about the landlocked salmon.

To be honest I could be wrong, but I don't know if any but maybe two of those fish are truly "wild". I know most of the fish caught on the Neversink below the dam are stocked fish all in that size range. The fish caught in the video definitely have more vibrant colors than most stocked fish with the gold colors and red dots, but they still have that blurry complexion in their spots that are usually indicative of stocked trout, while wild browns' dots usually are clean and sharply defined. They are probably holdovers from the previous year and definitely nice fish. But, I think its kind of cheap to make a highlight of the video (which is great otherwise) to be marveling over how the browns, which aren't even native to the U.S., are "wild", when there are not only TRULY wild and native Brook trout to be caught in the area but also brown trout who have probably been naturally reproducing a lot longer just a few miles upstream on the other side of the dam where the river is smaller. I know I'm kind of being a bitch about this but one of the reasons trout fishing is so fabulous and renowned is because of the purity and wildness of it, and I don't think we should forget the true treasure that real wild trout are for conservation's sake.
@WoolyBugged
@WoolyBugged 6 лет назад
I'm not sure how to respond to this but I appreciate your comment. I'll just say this, if anyone ever got a stocking truck into that gorge, my mind would be beyond blown.
@duke2043
@duke2043 6 лет назад
If you know what a wild brown trout looks like they were as wild as could be.Nice videos though especially like you just fish and don't have a bunch of dam music playing.I live in Northern Maryland around the Gunpowder and fish a lot of the streams you fish.Gunpowder is all native browns as you know those fish look just like fish you were catching. To me I don't think it's to difficult to tell difference between stocked browns and natives. Especially in a lot of smaller fish fish you were landing this guy should know they are native fish born and bred in this river.

alot of the trout in that section are wild but not all of them..the river is stocked pretty heavy above and below the gorge area so every fish is not wild..ny doesnt clip fins and just a short time in the water they color up quickly so u cannot tell most the time if its wild or not..they have fins for a reason and they will travel long distances especially when it warms up which it certainly does..we have caught numerous fish there over 20 inches brown brook and rainbow trout and sum were tagged fish meaning they came from the private club way up river in rock hill.. they got there by only one way and thats swimming..i dont think many people truly understand how far trout will travel in a river..the beaverkill is loaded with rainbow trout and never ever has it been stocked with rainbow trout...they swim up from the delaware to get there and thats over 15 miles.minimum...
@jeffreyfoster2444

termite122 Rainbows were stocked in the Beaverkill in July of 1881. It's been about 60 years since Bows were stocked in the system by the State,. Their descendants spawn in several tributaries to this day. You can find tiny rainbow fry miles up stream from the main river on all the rivers that feed the Delaware. The adult Browns and Bows do move a lot though. There was a radio telemetry study done in the 1980's that found individual trout moving from the Main Stem Delaware up the East Branch to the Beaverkill to spawn and back down to the East and West Branches to escape the heat in the summers. I've also seen huge Browns on redds in the late Fall/early Winter farther up tribes than I ever imagined they could go. In the summer, there would be almost no water in those brooks. I would love to see a repeat of that study with gps tags to see how much they are moving now. The rainbow population seems to be growing in the last few years. I'm catching them up on the Willowemoc now too. That's a very long swim for a Delaware bow.

Lovely colours and spots on some of those fish. Wondering, is it the camera settings that make them look yellowish or it that how they really are? No offence intended, I just have never seen trout with such extreme colouring.
@Misteryez
@Misteryez 6 лет назад
The Yellow bright colors are the hold overs or stream born here in NY. The darker ones are stocked ones. The longer they live in the wild from 1 to 5 lbs they have that bright color here in the East.

Why touch fish.....dehook them while keeping them in the water in your net...no need to touch with hands.....no need to photo....I think we are missing the idea of fly fishing....it’s not the fish......it’s a time and place....peace

William Skelton I have been fly fishing for almost 60 years. Dry fly, wet fly, nymphs, streamers. Never regarded dry fly only real fly fishing. To each his own!
