Fly fishing the Driftless Region in Wisconsin during the winter can be tough. But sticking with the grind can really make it worth it. I know I keep saying that , but it is really true. We started out our adventure on a tiny feeder stream just outside of Richland Center called Camp Creek. Camp Creek is a classic Driftless spring creek. During the spring and summer I would bet that it is absolutely amazing. But for my first time visiting this stream, winter conditions had the odds stacked against me. Even though things did not go as well as I thought, I had just enough time to scoot over to my plan B. Yet again another brand new stream just a few minutes up the road had the odds stacked up against me. Reads Creek is another spring creek but this one is in the Kickapoo watershed one valley over. We managed to really save the day with a cheeky dry fly bite and a solid fish on the nymph! Do not be afraid of winter folks! Get out and enjoy some winter silence.

Going to take up inland trout fishing (retiring in the Driftless), been watching lots of videos. Love your youthful exuberance and appreciation for everything that area has to offer...year round.

Mike, loved the theme of this video. First, get out there regardless of the weather or common knowledge. Be open to advice but also don’t be afraid to try it yourself and create your own truths. And second, which I think you’ve made a habit of, never be afraid to explore and change your plans. Sometimes plan B’s produce grade A results. Tight lines and stay warm!

@@FLYALLSZN great to see your vids. We're out of season for river fishing for trout/salmon/sea trout where I live in UK so we usually fish for grayling at this time of the year...but.... we're in COVID lockdown - unable to drive to get out to fish so it is a joy to see your enthusiasm for the fish and especially for fishing in winter. Keep 'em coming man. Tight Lines!

I need to check out that Loon product. Does it keep the eyelets from freezing up?

Yes and no! It helps to a degree but I would say after each hole you will need to clean the ice off

Thank you so much Paul! I would say that your best bet would be to check the DNR websites from Iowa & Wisco!

The stretch from the bar down to Hwy M where they did the stream work has really produced big for me at the Reads. Definitely would recommend if you haven't fished it yet. The west fork of the Kick is great too! Tight lines man, great vids.

What kind of indicators do you use on your nymph set up?
@FLYALLSZN
@FLYALLSZN 3 года назад
I use a New Zealand Strike Indicator! It is made of wool! It lands really soft and is surprisingly really good at holding a heavy rig!

Unfortunately I live too far from the Driftless to scout. But there a few streams in SE WI and ponds that can fish well during the winter, so occasionally I do check those out.

Us locals just put some line and small gold hooks in our pocket... take a hike on the river... find a 6” stick, just to anchor the line....turn over a rock for bait or carry a couple super micro jugs.. work it by hand through the zones ...o-yeah... no heat packs needed lol

@@FLYALLSZN spent summers up in vilas county back in the late 50`s and early 60`s when it was like the wilderness and trips to superior national forest in the late 60`s before the big forest fires . but ill tell you the peacefulness and somewhat solitude very close to every thing else that i did for a getaway it is just so relaxing to sit on a chair or the bank next to a small waterfall keep doing this it will add years to your life . and the friend that i go with is 81 and he grew up on a private resort when he was young up in upper michigan with two private lakes and a mini bike to take people out fishing on private lakes . and he thinks this is just great 7 trips there for us last year . we cary fly rods but we are worm guys .

Brooooo. That’s what it’s all about. I’ve been grinding Big Green and Blue with my 4 wt Redington classic trout all winter and grinding for those 2 trout days. First day I went out this year was the day after opening day and I caught 6 (at the time I was wishing I would’ve caught more. Lol)
