Fly fishing with live bait? Yup! It's a thing. I've been using live bait on a fly rod for seven years now. Here's the thing, the fish don't care if you use a fly rod. If want to go fly fishing with live bait, go ahead. Don't let anyone stop you. Fish don't care.
Live bait and fly fishing work well, but you'll have to change your cast. You'll use a hybrid cast instead of a traditional fly cast. Keep back casting to a minimum. The roll cast is your best friend. When back casting slow down. Live bait fly fishing is more delicate than you'd think. That's because it's easy to throw off bait.

Thank you. This is exactly what I was looking for. I plan to scale it up and use squid on a 10wt rod this summer. I fish for leopard sharks on tidal mud flats. In theory, you can get them on a fly if you are very determined. I’m not that patient. Baiting a fly rod should give some challenge without making things too difficult…

Its always strange for me to be in the presence of water fowl during a fishing trip. For some reason ducks bring a smile to my face. I enjoy watching them and their humorous ways..The fishing is never good. But just seeing and being able to experience nature is its own type of experience. Its always enjoyable... thank you for another great video.

When I fish the fly, I usually do not add bait. This is mostly because I have tied my own flies for years, and I judge them on their performance in that regard. However, I have adapted fly rods as the basis for U/L casting rigs. No finer platform exists for this work.

Have you tried roll casting where your bait only leaves the water at the end of the roll. You can cast a live cricket with a roll cast. Your rod never goes past perpendicular to the water. I also use it when casting under trees and bushes close to the bank.

Yeah, I roll cast almost all the time. In fact I hate back casting. In fact I'm thinking of building a fiberglass rod with double-tapered fly line to get a better roll cast than what this graphite, weight-forward set up can do.
