Fly Helicopters upside down? How to get started with my inverted flying tips.

I was asked to make a video on how to fly Helicopters inverted. It actually is harder to explain than to show, so there are a lot of visuals here. I'm just a sports flyer, but maybe you will see something useful anyway. First off, make sure you can fly your helicopter upright and are very comfortable with it. Then practice on a simulator before trying it on your real model. That will help tremendously. If your just learning regular helicopter flying, you might like to refer to my original 9 helicopter tips and rules of thumb.
Here they are:
There is nothing special here, as this is all just common sense.
1. Never ever let friends fly your Heli.
2. Never watch the Tail rotor, unless inverted.
3. Don't let friends watch while your learning as they will egg you on to do stuff your not ready to do. "Hey Dave, will that heli do a Lomchevac?"
4. Don't fly the heli in forward flight before you learn to hover or you can expect to never get it back in one piece!
5. Always practice hovering at eye level where it is easier, not lower in ground effect.
6. Learn to pinch the left stick, as you can't afford to drop it, since it controls 3 things at once.
7. Always ease down the throttle. Remember, No chop stick, no bang boom!
8. Remember your last move if you get lost in the sun and hold the sticks it till you see it again.
9. Only fly as far away as you can see it comfortably, 'cause once it is out of sight it will also be out of control.
Remember, "He who dares nothing, need not expect anything" and "If you continue to do what you have always done, you will always get what you have always gotten!"
I prefer the German Aerofly sim, as it feels more like the real thing to me. There are several versions, some under $39 on SteamPowered.com. The less expensive ones have less planes and flying sites, but the graphics engine and algorithms are the same. If you order a dongle for your radio, you will find that most enjoyable, since your flying wirelessly, just like the real thing. I fly the Ultimate version of RC-7 which is $139 and there is an intermediate version called Professional that is only $99. Here is a link with a list of all of them. store.steampowered.com/search...
Happy flying and practice practice practice.

Hi Dave, Never did any inverted flying. I noticed at the 10:00 mark that Mike Mas was flying a Schluter Champion with two more parked. The Champion and Scout were my favorite helis. Still have both. Saw your broken foot, I broke my left hand 10/88 with a main rotor strike while practicing hovering in the back yard. It crushed the knuckle of my index finger and spent five days in the hospital. Took another nine months of therapy to get about half the movement back. Has been like that since. Stay safe.

Wow, we have a lot in common. That cast with me and John Simone was due to a Futaba radio failure that sent my Mantis towards the crowd as I was doing a demo for at a Company Christmas party. I stopped it from going into the crowd by kicking it. It still hurts today. Sorry you had that bad experience too. It is all part of the learning curve, cause I bet we both won't be doing that again. LOL Thanks kindly Don and you stay safe and well too.

Thank You for another video! I look forward to watching it later. :) I read the comments, and it is nice to see so many friendly and knowledgeable folks participating. I hope that one of the tips for inverted flying is NOT, to stand on your head. :) Just a little, well, very little humor to be more precise, in an attempt to brighten your day. I hope you continue to produce and share more videos in the future, especially helicopter-related productions. :) _John_

I'm not sure why, but with both helis and planes, I get my orientation completely confused as soon as I invert, I guess I just need to start working on it once we start getting some nice weather over here. Great flying!
@NightFlyyer
@NightFlyyer 4 года назад
I understand. But if you pretend the heli is an airplane, you will see that in forward flight, it is just like an airplane and if you roll over to inverted, the same thing applies. Down stick makes it climb and up stick makes it fly lower. Keep the TX pointing the same way the heli is flying and you will see that will help a lot. Good luck and be safe. Thanks much.

NightFlyyer I just don’t get the physics of a heli doing a tail stand! 🤔. There’s no airflow down towards the tail
@NightFlyyer
@NightFlyyer 4 года назад
@@nutleighgrove3658 Right. There is a stud pin sticking out of the tail boom and that is resting on the ground holding the heli up. Then it is like doing tic tocks. It was amazing to see.

He had a pin sticking out of the tail boom and he flipped the heli up on the pin so the tail boom rested on the ground and held it there. Quite amazing to see.

My first time flying Inverted even though it was on a nano cpx, was so satisfying, but I put many hours on a flight sim first. I dont think i could have done it without that. You need to build up muscle memory, other wise I think it's just too hard to achieve
@NightFlyyer

Very helpful, this will sound like a lie but I learned to hover in two flights on a American RC helicopters (Super?) Mantis collective pitch heli. No gyros just a well designed helicopter
@NightFlyyer
@NightFlyyer 4 года назад
Wow, that's very commendable. So you know then that my flying friend, John Simone owned American RC helicopters. The Super Mantis came after the Mantis. The Mantis was a pain, because it had no collective and the tail rotor belt slipped very much. With no collective, the only thing that made it go up and down was the engine RPM which lagged a lot and caused a lot of body torque. So with no gyro, it was difficult to master. So, I assume your are quite accomplished at heli flying these days, as it sounds like you had the knack too. Thanks and happy flying.

Dave , what is a reasonable priced simulator to practice on. I was learning when I was living in Michigan and I moved to West Texas. It is quite windy here and I haven't been able to fly at all here. As I told a while back I am 72 also and I'm hoping that I can continue to learn. I have six channel and a 9 channel remote so that's what I'd have to use with the simulator. Any advise would be helpful. Thanks so much for doing the video.

@@johnboy6247 Yes it will teach you well, but has not as many planes, helis or flying sites. If you have a Spektrum, I suggest getting their dongle. It must be purchased from them or amazon. If you have a different radio, you need to search for that particular dongle. Steampowered.com does not sell dongles. Good luck.
